Thank you so much for once again clarifying the terminology that has been used. This helps me correct the term of "druids" that was used in my family in Wales. When I think about the traditions that were passed to me it it very obvious that my ancestors were "herbalists and animists" I was never comfortable with the Druid definition that was used in my family so now I can comfortably correct them and provide a different view and perspective that would honor our ancestors and their natural ways. It is true that a lot of modern Druid or Neo-Druid traditions had their start in the Druid Revival which was, basically as Lora quite accurately said, " a bunch of upperclass English men." That being said I do find that the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids, (O.B.O.D.) Has done an exceptional job of promoting an honest dialoge about the origins and shortcomings of Neo-Druidy, while at the same time pointing out what we can do better for a more inclusive, respectful, authentic, and healthy version of modern druidry. Our new Chosen Chief, Eimer Burke, is actually an Irish Woman. To me the O.B.O.D. has a very healthy grasp on what it means to be a druid today, informed by ancient druidry and the revival while making sure we are inclusive and intersectional.

I'm late to this video's publishing but I found it while doing research on my own spiritual journey. My parents both trace back Irish roots - to the much more privileged protestant "Ulster"/"Scots" Irish on my mother's side who came to America in the 1700's, and on my father's side much closer with my grand grandmama (who I desperately wish I could've met) coming from Dublin just a few short generations ago. I always wanted to reconnect with those roots and maybe make up for some of the prejudices in my family (not just what I mentioned, believe me, there's a lot), and I wound up here. What I didn't expect was the little rant about halfway through about people appropriating Celtic and Irish culture and spirituality to be used as a racist and LGBTQ-phobic cudgel. And I must say as a transgender woman, I feel very seen and blessed to be helped along through education by someone so not only knowledgeable, but accepting and welcoming. Thank you very much for this video. I found it extremely beneficial. I hope you and yours are blessed in 2022.

I was quite shocked as well, I know a group that has taken the Norse path for those reasons. With their pure blood bs, and they are so I don’t even have the words they betrothed their daughter to a 14 year old boy when she’s 18 to keep her from being a lesbian, as she was attracted to my daughter who is a lesbian, and won’t really let them be friends. So it’s infuriating absolutely infuriating that they’re trying to take over the Irish pagan path, or Druid paths. Like a flesh eating disease trying to spread rapidly. I even brought up certain mythologies where it’s pretty evident that even a lot of the gods were at least bisexual. Not to mention that the tribes liked a variety as well. It’s toxic perceptions and beliefs and with family and friends who are of the community it’s infuriating to me.

I appreciate the mention of groups that are appropriating Celtic pagan ways. People watch a series and misinterpret the teachings, buy a few weapons, costumes, and instruments online, and create a hate-filled, cult-like, toxic patriarchal version that twists the teachings… I am very uncomfortable with some of the neo-fascist groups that mask as Norse paganism- it’s embarrassing to humanity. They should be called what they are: fascist hate groups run by immature and ignorant power-seeking men-children who adopt some pagan-looking practices - with strict defined roles - they’re exclusive and not at all inclusive. Okay, needed to get that out of my system. The next rant is how capitalism/consumerism cheapens the teachings.

Ms. O'Brien, thank you for your videos. Your down to earth, true to facts content is much appreciated. I wanted to point out one thing, I hope may be of mutual interest for all who are seeking to restore the old ways. I find it interesting how similar Shintoism is to what you described, not to mention the Native American beliefs. If anyone wants to check out a thriving animism worship system I would recommend visiting Japan. Their Shinto sites might be similar to what Europe and the ancient sacred places might have looked like if monotheism had not taken over. Please, if you do visit Japan (when Covid-19 issues are under control so to speak), please be respectful. And by the way, do not walk thru the center of the Torii gate. That is the path of the gods. Take the sides of the entrance. I know we (European decent) have much to recover from our past but it might be helpful to learn from others on our way. Maybe structure the sites like a Shinto shrine in that they have an offering box for the upkeep costs and "priest" income. They sell keepsakes for additional income and something appropriate for the worshipers to take home (instead of taking from nature or the sacred site). This would help alleviate the desire for some to leave candles, etc which have become issues. But of course keep it all as true to what we know of the Celtic old ways, culturally appropriate. Thank you again, you are appreciated.

(Sorry for my english) I am french, but I know that the ancestral culture of my forebears had been eliminate by Roman Republic/Empire. Today, we have (almost) lost our celtic culture to adopt a latine culture melt with some bribes of germanic and celtic culture. French is a latin language, but with some celtic words in all the stuff about agriculture and same nordic language for marine stuff (Normandie babby). Today we don't know the language of the Gauls, we ignore the world view of the Gauls, and a few about their religion. We have only clues like that Druids was really influenced by Pythagorician School who was a scientifist and religious conception of the world. For them mathematics was the language of the Gods; a mysterious language who permit to understand the mystery of the world. I try to discover the path to my real identity: my family has his origin in Lozère, a french department in Arverne region (the name is "Auvergne" today): Arverne were a Gaul tribe who give Vercingetorix, the hero who unificated Gauls tribes against the roman ennemi.

I do know my maternal grandfather’s family settled in VA in the 1600’s because of the land grant a distant cousin found researching the family tree. But other branches I can’t get beyond the 1800’s or Revolutionary War because the records just aren’t there (thanks Civil War) or names are reused and very common (lots of George’s, Williams, and Jameses). My DNA results say 17% of it matches people in Ireland (the rest is mostly Britain and Western Europe) but I have found no one with verifiable Irish roots. I just want to find a culture I belong to because in my part of the US, it more of what class you fit in. 😔

Research cultures you are drawn to. What Lora's saying is that having the genes isn't required, but nor does it automatically make you Irish or Scots etc.. You're Irish diaspora. But this doesn't mean you cannot be part of it.. Lora has more videos on cultural appropriation vs appreciation that can help. I have lived in Ireland since 2000, and am originally from USA. My genetics are Sicilian, Northern Italian, Scots, Swedish and Irish - I grew up thinking of myself as "Irish and Italian". I was fortunate in that my mother brought me out of USA to visit Ireland and Europe when I was growing up, so I had early exposure to the fact that the lived reality of Irish culture was not the same as what Irish Americans imagined. It's quite possible it's a name that is pre-Celtic, that dates back to the Atlantic Bronze Age or earlier. We still have no idea how Celtic languages ended up in Britain. Did they evolve there at the same time as on the Continent, were they introduced through some dynastic change. Made all the more complicated by the Druids apparently originating in Britain but being the protectors of Celtic culture including language in Britain and Europe.

British Isles is used in modern language as a way of showing that Great Britain controlled those Isles. And Great Britain is a name for basically England and the neighboring lands that it forcefully took ownership of. England tried very hard to force a common British Identity On Wales Scotland and Ireland and to call it the British Isles is almost like saying they won.. but if you call it the Celtic Isles it is an easy way of describing what they all have in common instead of naming one island or Nation as dominant.

5:00 Here you cite Andalusia as being in the Celtic cultural sphere, i find this odd. There are many parts of Spain that were Celtic, most of it actually, but Andalusia was *probably* not one of them. While there has been made a case for the Tartessians to be considered a Celtic people, this is based mostly on the Tartessian alphabet, which albeit not 100% proven yet, seems to correspond to a form of a Celtic language (and we are talking bronze Age, before there were even Celts in Central Europe, so this would imply Tartessian to be an original, early form of a Celtic language, unlike for example the Celtiberian language, which was a Celtic language written in the Iberian Alphabet). However, ALL but 2 of the Tartessian inscriptions are actually not found in Tartessia (Andalusia), but in the lands of the Celtic tribe of the Cunettes, in Southern Portugal. So Tartessian Alphabet should really be just called Cunetian, or "Southwest Paleo-Hispanic" as it often times is. And this would make sense, as the Cunettes were indeed described as Celtic by all ancient sources.

Would you consider it problematic and appropriative for folks such as Americans and the English to practice pagan religions as a whole or only if they weren’t staying true to the old ways of the religion? I personally am studying this religion and way of life and the core tenets and values definitely speak to me where I would consider practicing the religion. However I myself am born and raised American and at least as far as I know have no Irish or other celtic background.

If you can be a Neo-Druid, why is being a Neo-Shaman "Problematic"?
@GreenSage307
@GreenSage307 3 жыл бұрын
Shamanism is way older than most formed faiths on earth and is connected into Druidry and other Pagan followings, the thing is a lot of the old Trible Shamans do not agree that it should be taken out of its cultures and only the tribe's leader should only be able to use it, sadly it had been taken and made into a medical practice that doesn't reflect its true nature.
@IsMiseAine
@IsMiseAine 3 жыл бұрын
Druidry is an umbrella term that covered a whole range of 'professions', vocations, philosophies, learnings, practices and (religious) beliefs amongst a number of cultures and people's. Shaman is a specific term for a tribal Spiritual Elder of a specific tribe in Siberia. That makes the answer to your question pretty obvious no? However, if you are appropriating the term Druid or neo-Druid for your own financial or social gain then that too IS problematic 🤷

Good presentation. But I've yet to meet someone who uses Celt as a racial purity thing. I have seen ancestor worship along with a yearning to look into one's heritage. The majority of people you're talking about usually use Norse culture for that.

@@Ogham So you have all of this experience, yet you can't put forth credible evidence to back up your claims? Seriously if you could do that instead of just getting defensive over a very mild critique, I'd happily retract my statement. I might not be "on the front lines", but I have been a practicing Celtic Pagan for seventeen years now. I have yet to meet someone who is a Celtic Pagan that is far right, a Nazi, Alt-Right, etc. The vast majority of Celtic Pagans that I have met in my life are usually Centrist or Libertarian, (meaning that they don't care about what or who you are, as long as you're not hurting anyone) and despise mixing religion with politics. Such experience is why I have come to the conclusion that there's little to no reason to believe that Celtic Identitarian Pagans exist, or are big enough to worry about. Could just be my perspective, or it could just be that you just made such claims in order to feel important. Judging by your reaction I'd say it's the latter.

I meet them about every other day here in the youtube comments, and trying to get into the multiple facebook groups I run, or popping up in other people's facebook groups, or publishing fucking magazines es about it like Caroline Emerick, or at events I attend in person where I'm expected to join in with the casual racism they sidle up around me with.maybe, just maybe, your 'casual criticism' is touching a nerve because a) you are so blatantly wrong in your assumptions and obviously (by your own admission) limited experience of this thing which is so disgustingly prevalent in my life as an irish person they view as safe coz I'm expected to be on their side, and b) it's mansplaining the situation to me as if your limited opinion is the truth because you say so. Please learn from this, if you're genuinely open to being educated about it, or feel free to feck off my channel. GRMA

This video is frustrating because it uses a lot of fancy words to explain the time period and geographical location where Celtic paganism started and was practiced. It does not go into the actual beliefs which I thought religion was based on beliefs, not so much as well its from this time at these places and they liked gay sex. As someone who was wanting to learn about this religion I am left very empty as to the root of their belief system.

@@Ogham the only thing I dont understand is you say that being a celt isnt a race, and sure it isnt, but you can trace celts via dna, in the same way you can trace anglo saxons via dna. Wales is a celtic nation, and I am Welsh as far back as my ancestry test cares to go. Does that mean you should be hateful to others? Nope, of course not, but you can trace that kinda stuff. In the same way as you can trace the Goths or the Danes etc. And I personally think your opinion that a person off the street is as close in dna as a brother and sister is abit off, family members tend to have closer matches in DNA because they will have the same parents and you obviously get half your dna off each parent so. Other than that great video and yeah fuck homophobia and racism :)
