I've always seen that deep growling voice as the actual Sidious persona, when Sidious is tired of keeping up the Palpatine façade and needs to hammer a point home. You can pretty much hear Vader do a **gulp** when Sidious says "I wonder... if your thoughts *_are clear on this, Lord Vader._* " because he knows he's dangerously close to pissing off someone that can wipe the floor with him, and has no compunctions towards killing him and choosing a more worthy Apprentice.

In this scene, Palpatine starts out in his almost kind, fatherly voice. But every word grows progressively more serious and threatening and the evil shows in his face when he threatens Vader. Then when Vader gets the hint Palpatine becomes the satisfied father figure. Ian is just amazing.

​​​​​@@marial8235 Palpatine is a psychopath and a liar, so him switching to a father figure when confronted by Rey directly and personally is kinda on brand as he also most likely is a coward especially when in his half alive state and he is willing to discard her again once he believed he became God. I mean he literally murdered his only son just so he could get her to experiment on.... There's no real confusion when you think of it. To be honest he never wanted Rey as his granddaughter he only viewed her as either material or a vessel for himself as such having her killed by Kylo Ren would benefit him as he could than transfer his soul to the body or use her in some way to create a better vessel for himself, and when confronted he merely tried to trick her into initiating the ritual herself, so there's really nothing confusing about his behaviour through out the movie if you think about it, even though it looks like his goals are inconsistent with each other it's not really the case if you understand Sidious.

I think this may be a fun theory: Vader's desire to continue hunting down Obi-Wan and fight and "destroy" him isn't literally an attempt at revenge, it's a subconscious cry for help. In continuing to chase down Obi-Wan, a deeply buried fraction of the old Anakin hopes that Obi-Wan might somehow 'safe' him.. Vader interprets this cry for help as pure hate and acts upon that. Ofcourse, Emperor Palpatine senses all this, which is why he orders Darth Vader to stay away from Obi-Wan. Its very sad if you look at it like this. Obi-Wan 'gave up' on Anakin and his new master orders him to stay away from him, he is not even allowed to hate and destroy Obi-Wan even more which truly eliminates the last link to his old master (until he finds out he has a son, of course). The dark side has truly imprisoned Anakin.

This is a sound theory, and aligns closely with the theory that Anakin suffers from borderline personality disorder. In episode III, Anakin was not first to draw his lightsaber. He was hoping that Obi-wan would choose loyalty to him over his loyalty to the jedi, and does not consider Obi-wan an enemy until Obi-wan makes it clear he stands against Anakin. In this series, he is relentless in his pursuit of Obi-wan, but never finishes the job despite clearly being within his power to do so. He is trapped in a conflicting pattern of wanting to draw Obi-wan in and wanting to push him away, as is the case with borderline individuals. Borderline individuals suffer from a tendency to feel abandoned, and struggle to find stability in close relationships. It is clear to me that his anger towards Obi-wan is not from his past defeats, but from feeling abandoned by his master when he needed him most. And he continually seeks Obi-wan in the hopes that he will one day choose loyalty to his friend and not abandon him again. But at the same time he does not feel worthy of salvation for what he has done, and is unable to reach out directly himself for help. Instead he continually punishes himself, and a symptom of this self loathing is the need to destroy everything around him that reminds him of his past self.

The Imperial March is to signify that the impulsive Vader that was just defeated by Obi Wan, the one who still is consumed by parts of Anakin, will start to become the cold, calculating Vader we see in the OT.

This scene is exactly why Palpatine is a villain on a scale that is difficult to wrap your head around in a nutshell. Not only is it the fact that he brings the most feared man in the galaxy to heel in seconds with a little bit of faux concern, it is the fact he does it for showing that he has any semblance of an independent personality outside of being his slave. Not insubordination. Simply being a person who might have anything in his life that is not serving him 24/7. A mistake that is punishable by death. Also, it serves to remind of how every single last event in the Star Wars universe only happens as part of a grand conspiracy set in motion by Palpatine. Every scene, every line, every movie, every TV show, every tear, every laugh, every love, every loss, every conversation, every last iota of this entire series has Palpatine's galactic ambition as the prime causal factor shaping its context. What a character.

This scene right here even though it's after the duel signifies that Darth Vader wasn't giving it is all during the series finale fight with Obi-Wan he was conflicted right after he got the Ashoka treatment from ob1 you don't see Darth Vader's eyes at first you see anakins for a split second until Darth Vader takes over once more..... great scene signifying the inner struggle between Darth Vader and Anakin and that Darth Vader regardless of how many people he killed Anakin was always there. Now if Kenobi would have said something about Padme oh boy that would have given Vader his second wind just like Obi-Wan did and comic book Vader might have been unleashed. Praise to Hayden Christensen as always and Ewan McGregor. Freaking both Legends deserve praise for their performances in this series

It's crazy how "If your past cannot be overcome..." is both wise advice & a chilling threat. I think it's that combination of the two that really made it register with the resolute & usually unreasonable Darth Vader. Vader had to let go of his past & obsession to be able to move on... or else.

Not really. Even if you go by the comics, he already tried and failed to bring her back by this point. He literally went into the heart of the Dark Side itself and got kicked out of it. That’s when he had to accept she was gone forever.

@@rickblaine9670 if I’m correct by the time he made the final iteration of that castle of his, Vader had already given up since in the comics it opened a portal to what he wanted, but didn’t get and only tormented him. So by this point he’s already given up on Padme and is just wallowing in grief, despair, anger. So I think by this point in this scene, Vader has finally and fully gave in.

Something I just realized - this episode marks the return of both Qui-Gon and Palpatine. Both appear as light blue apparitions. And yet one appears using technological means, while the other appears via spiritual means. I think this does a great job of highlighting the contrasts of both characters - while they both serve separately as mentors to the protagonist and antagonist, the medium by which they appear also emphasizes the Sith fixation on material power, technology, and wealth, and the Jedi's deeper connection to the spiritual aspects of the Force.

This scene is great, because at 0:48 You could feel that Sidious was gonna give Vader the Dooku treatment, the force choke from half a galaxy away treatment, but Vader did say the right words which leads to 0:58 which you can see Sidious nodding as if Vader passed the vibe check.

Is it only me or to someone else the fact that Vader sits comfy in his throne while speaking to Palpatine feels wrong. I understand when he speaks to Reeva - he is the boss, he towers over her and she is a small hologram. But when he speaks to the Emperor it should be much bigger hologram to emphasize their dynamic (calling Vader his friend would have played a bit different) and Vader should also be kneeled
