I love how ambiguous the last line is; it never reveals whose life he is going to take: the girl's, her lover's, or his own. Haunting
@gingertaylor61805 жыл бұрын
Emme B. i recently found this song and fell in love with it. i agree with what you said, i love that line. the tone and mood the song sets up, coupled with the atmosphere makes it sound like he’s talking about the life of him or her. that’s what i think, anyway

@@westernwolfe Ah yes, good insight. I think the lines "Aint you worried what I'll do, and that boy should worry too... Oh, was he ready to die for you baby?" suggest the possibility he is taking the girl's lover's life as well. Perhaps he is going to kill both of them.
@Sphinxardon5 жыл бұрын
@@westernwolfe I don't think it's more likely to be the lover's more than any other based on these lyrics. If you look at how time seems to go within the song, it seems to sort of take place within two days. He first says that he's waited for her until the end of the day, "staring at the setting sun", but she basically ran away with another man, "that boy you call your friend". So at the start of the song, it's pretty much twilight. He says he would've let her go had she asked him to, but she didn't and rather left him to wait. He adds it's too late to forgive, and probably for her to come back: "the day has passed, the night has come". And while she's passing the night with another man, he asks "is he ready to die for you now that the deed is done?" As in, does he love you enough to die but he also mentions that he was ready to die for her. So you may take it as him threatening the lover's life, him being ready to take his own life or hers because what she did is unforgivable. It kind of sets up the ambiguity. He then proceeds to say he "wasn't the same man this morning, when the sun rose", so we're basically the morning AFTER he's waited for her. Thus, him saying he's gonna "take a life this evening, when the sun sets" happens the NEXT evening, not the same as the one he's waited. So to summarize, the dude waited a whole day but was left by the girl to pass the night with another man, which is not the first time. Scorned and alone, he took the whole night to make up his mind and made a decision as the sun rose; this evening, he's gonna take someone's life. You don't know whose, it's still pretty ambiguous in my opinion, but either his own, the girl's or the lover's are pretty possible at this point. And I feel he would do so in front of them to show that he was ready to take his life for her, "look what I was ready to do for you."

I really like how the chorus of Setting Sun is like a much darker version of the chorus of Ends of the Earth. “Oh is he ready to die for you baby? No, but you know I was / I’m fond of livin’ but I would have given it all for the girl I loved” versus “I was ready to die for you baby, doesn’t mean I’m ready to stay / What good is livin’ the life you’ve been given if all you do is stand in place” The choruses sound just alike lyrically, rhythmically, and musically. This one is just much darker. Very cool.
@janeray87425 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too! The part where he sings "I was ready to die for you baby" is exactly the same tune, just in a different key and with different accompaniment. I love how all their songs are connected to tell a big story, while telling little stories in each song.

Idk if anyone else mentioned it, but this song reminds me so much of Shakespeare's Othello? Like how he changed almost overnight ("I ain't the person I was this morning when the sun rose"), how he wants her to confess to it and admit what she'd done ("does it hurt when you lie to me?" "Can you face me for what you've done?"), how he wants to kill the both of them (literally the entire song basically), how he can't help himself from thinking of past memories and his love for her despite being unable to forgive her (also the entire song). Honestly? This should 100% Othello's song. This is basically what I imagine was going on in Othello's head the entire time, and basically with the same progression. Great song though, almost haunting. :>
