I don't know what the actual message of the song is, but this song makes me think about myself a couple years ago. Haunted by things of my past, full of trust issues, detaching myself from people I used to really love to hang out with, and just feeling so alone because of my fear. Eventually I met someone who took my hand and brought me back. Life has a weird way of having dramatic ups and downs.

“Who is the third who walks always beside you? When I count, there are only you and I together But when I look ahead up the white road There is always another one walking beside you Gliding wrapt in a brown mantle, hooded I do not know whether a man or a woman -But who is that on the other side of you?” -The Wasteland by TS Eliot

See the Wikipedia article "Third Man factor" about "reported situations where an unseen presence such as a spirit provides comfort or support during traumatic experiences." T. S. *It genuinely pleases me to see Lord Huron getting what they deserve. I told at least 20 people to check this band out, took 5 of my friends to see them live when they came to town in… 2013/14. They played to a crowd of a 200 max. Now I get on KZbin and their videos have 230 MILLION VIEWS? God damn. Thats great. The exact same shit happen with Tame Impala. I was a super fan in 2010 when Innerspeaker came out, told a ton of people about them, took 9 people to their show, cut to a decade later and Tame Impala is fucking huge. I don’t like either of the bands newer releases, and prefer that first 2 album zone of pure bliss. But those 2 near perfect albums are more than enough to have my life long support.*

Here's what I took from the video. The two travelers killed a man or lost a friend and departed. Traveler 1 sees the dead man repeatedly because his conscious is tearing at him because of the deed he has done. Eventually, driven by deliriousness, he sees traveler 2 as the dead traveler and kills him to rid his guilty conscious. That's it. Simple as that folks. It's not that "deep".
