I'm from DC, and when I was 15 back in 2000, Things Fall Apart was my first REAL hip-hop album. It wasn't a cheap CD either, I think I paid $20 for it!! As soon as I loaded it into my stereo, that quote from Mo' Better Blues, which really goes to show you how smart The Roots really are, and how privy they are to this ancient argument about them and Black Thought... Anyway, then tracks 2 - 18: DOPE DOPE DOPE DOPE DOPENESS was injected into my brain! It was the first time rhymes affected me in such a way that I wanted to immediately learn every single word in every song so I could rap along. It was the first time I admired an emcee's delivery, tone, emphasis, flow, conviction, imagination, and wordplay. "When the Fifth do get on and perform, you in for it/It ain't no way to cen-sor it, my style metaphoric/To bricks and ten tons stacks hard to lift!" I always imagine all the stacks of bricks with that line! Furthermore, it was the first time, upon listening to any album that I immediately wanted to run out to see the show, and when I did I wasn't disappointed AT ALL!!! Shout out to 9:30 Club December 2000! TARIQ TROTTER aka BLACK THOUGHT is a tenured sensei. He's been on a NEW LEVEL waaaaaay before A$AP Ferg. Black once said, "Push pen to paper like Chinua Achebe." So, look. If you don't like emcees who have completely MASTERED the art form of RAP, intricately weaving together simple to complex concepts in order to tell all kinds of stories so that it comes off as exquisitely effortless, then Black Thought is not for you.
