1 Lord Jesus Christ, we seek Thy face; Within the veil we bow the knee; Oh, let Thy glory fill the place, And bless us while we wait on Thee.

Could anyone please explain the line "within the veil we bow the knee" - what veil are they talking about?

The veil refers to the the symbol of a veil or hiding principle between life here in the world and the afterlife, so within the veil would most likely mean in this life

@@RodSmith0 Thank you! Is it similar to the "secret place of the Most High"? Is that what you meant? I found a definition of a veil as a reference to monastic life, the nuns were said to be "under the veil". Could this hymn had been written by a monk?

I would take it that the phrase within the veil is symbolic of the ability to come into God’s presence because of the cross. Referring back to Exodus 26:31-33 the veil is what divides the tabernacle in half and covered the holy of holies in both the tabernacle and later temples. The veil prevented anyone from entering into God’s presence in the holy of holies except the High Priest on the Day of Atonement and they could only come out alive due to the sprinkling of blood. The veil separated sinful people from God’s holy presence. Mark 15:37-38 would describe the veil inside the temple being torn in half the very moment that Christ died on the cross. Symbolically, now through Christ’s sacrifice we can enter into God’s presence even though we are sinful. The death of Christ opened a just way for us to come into God’s presence. Therefore I’d take it that being within the veil is meaning that we are in God’s presence through the bloodshed and intercession as Great High Priest (Hebrews 4:4) of the Lord Jesus.
