Lord of the Flies Chapter One: The Sound of the Shell read by Alexa Frechette
There are a few parts where I read the wrong word or stumble, but I left it all in--remember a good reader is anyone who reads! Be sure to follow along in your copy. Anyone can listen, but reading along will make the rest of the book seem a little easier, and is shown to improve your reading levels in ways audio alone won't. There are other online versions available if an audiobook is useful for you. Chapter one is 15% of the book!
I'll be honest. I don't like this book. That's why I made this for you. Like you, I had to read Lord of the Flies in eighth grade on a tight schedule. I was so frustrated. It seemed dense and I was sick of reading about another British boy. I also was so mad about how Piggy was treated and described. I still wonder if most readers pick up the satire, or if the book ultimately glorifies violence. Still, it is great for its use of figurative language and the allegory of how the British boys perceived power and their role in society with focus on domination, personally and colonially. Just because one book is tough, don't let this turn you off from reading. Get as much as you can out of it for your assignments and engagement, and then be sure to read better books, or write them.
