It’s only now that I realize Aragorn called out ‘Hold!!’ in Elvish because he believed that that arrow shot was so brilliant that only an Elf could have made it. That old Rohan archer should be proud!! I really hope the old boy survived when the enemy breached the walls.

I have the same complaint with this scene as I have with Game of Thrones' handling of the Ygritte battle scenes. There should have been a lot more women armed and fighting. Men might die during and after a battle, but they die cleanly and quickly. We women have a LOT more to lose. Under the circumstances, I sure as hell wouldn't have been cowering down in the deep.
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei 2 ай бұрын
@@pricklypear7516 Historically speaking, women would certainly not just wait in some cave or whatever. They weren't really expected to fight (although there are documented cases of women taking up arms and do it anyway, most famously Jeanne Laisné), but in such a situation where you are under siege and the worst will happen if you lose, they would certainly help in every way they could, bringing arrows to archers, extinguish fires, cook water (or nasty things like urine) to pour it on enemies from the walls, treat the wounded ect. .

What I love about this scene is the fact Aragorn is leading the Elven army. They were lead to Helms Deep by Haldir, he would be the equivalent to a commander or general in ranks of men. Even Legolas an Elvish Prince son of King Thranduil they do not follow.They follow Aragorn just out of the sheer respect they must have for the man, earned through tales and feats in war. Of course he grew up in Rivendell so some of the elves probably know him too. But from a military point they know they follow the true High King of Gondor, Isildurs heir, Elessar himself. What a moment.

It’s the details I appreciate more as I get older. The Uruks send their berserkers up with the ladders because their unarmored and less likely to get pulled down by gravity. Likewise they clear a space, intimidate the enemy, and interrupt the constant stream of arrows that were decimating their front lines. Also, it may just be me overthinking it, but I expect they had the ladder furthest toward the Hornburg rising first because there’s a spot where the line of archers is interrupted by the sudden height change in the wall. Or because that’s closest to where the Men, lesser skilled in archery, are stationed.

As a kid, I always wondered why Aragorn was so angry for that early shot being fired (after all, it was a great shot), but then I realized that the entire point of this "battle" was never to win. It was all about perseverance, banking on Gandalf fulfilling his promise at "first light." In firing that early shot, that man shortened the delay of the enemy's advance. Every second of delay in the enemy's attack was less lives they would potentially lose, so causing the enemy's immediate action would cost them dearly (and even jeopardize their survival altogether).

2:40 There Bob was, cheering with the rest of us, having the time of his life. We thought it would last forever. Then the arrow came. It came without warning. We watched Bob fall. Everyone fell silent, smitten with shock and utter horror. One moment he was there, then he was gone...gone forever. Then the shouting started. Uruk-hai started shouting Bob's name at the top of their lungs. Rage overtook us in an instant. It was in this moment that Chad (the dude on the rock) raised his sword and screamed into the rain. It was a cry that would forever be remembered among the Uruk-hai. It was a shout full of pain, sorrow and unquenchable rage. "FOR BOB!!!"

ian maclean No it's fact, here is more: During the long nightshoot at Helm's Deep, the Orcs had to find ways to entertain themselves. Sala Baker comments, "We had about 60 guys singing in the middle of the night-- singing and waiting for the next shot. It was really cool. The crew would join in.. it was a way to keep ourselves amused. The guitar would come out, and all those Uruk-hai and beserkers sat around jamming! Billy Boyd also says, "To keep up morale, they would bring a band in-- a string quartet or something-- during lunch. It was nice. One day, they brought this jazz band in, and someone in full Uruk-hai costume started dancing. I remember thinking that was quite bizarre. You never really sat with the Uruk-hai, even at lunch! You knew the people, but the Hobbits didn't sit with the Uruk-hai! We're sitting there watching this guy dancing, and I thought, "That's something you don't see every day."

Gotta love remembering that when Tolkien wrote out these battles he used to be an officer in the British Army. So, at the very least he knew the soldier type of attitude. Both sides of a fight usually at the very least seem competent. The defenders staying up and inside their walls to pelt the attackers with arrows, the attackers knowing their best chance at victory is to get up the wall as quickly as possible. The battles are amazing spectacles while also working the magic of actually making sense!

If you watch the BTS, they actually do use lots of real stunt men for the battles. However, Peter had no time due to the studio to blend it well enough with the cgi ones. The Hobbit being bad wasn’t Peters fault at all, it’s the studio that wanted him to pump out 3 movies in 3 years. Go watch the BTS because he’s a nervous and depressed wreck in them. He at least had 3 years of pre-production with LOTR, while the Hobbit had maybe a year and a few months.

The thing that really hits home for me are the scenes with the teenagers and elderly men being suited up with armor and given swords, basically being drafted because they needed all the men they could get. The women and children cowering in the safehold below. This reflects real historical events.

I always thought that the Battle of Helm's Deep was very reminiscent of working at Walmart during their Black Friday event. That part where Gimli explains the Uruk-Hai is like veteran retail workers prepping the new employee for their first black friday event "These are not NORMAL consumers; these are HOLIDAY OPPORTUNISTS! Their credit card balances are THICK, and their shopping carts are BROAD..."

Fun-fact: The pounding of the spears the orcs due before battle was based on director Peter Jackson witnessing the actors doing. It seems many were working day and night jobs when not filming. Many were tired and some even likely sleeping between takes. Before they all started they would all pound their spears into the ground together to rouse as a team. Jackson felt it HAD to be put into the movie. It provides a great sense of suspense and psychological warefare. Of course it was shattered by one arrow! That of course angered them greatly, but their little spectacle was over. 02:03

The Uruks came to make peace. The brought the traditional Uruk gifts of peacemaking (overly large spears), wore their finest ceremonial armor, and even thought to bring fire to their new friends so that they can warm up and dry off once the rain finished. I mean damn, they even brought ladders to get to the hard to reach places in Helms Deep (It's all walls and shit after all) to help with repairs and decoration. So thoughtful. Then that vicious old man struck down an innocent Uruk and doomed Middle Earth to years of war. That bastard.

Actually they were just knocking. See their boots were all muddy because of the long, arduous march in the rain and they were worried about getting things dirty. So they just stood back and pounded their spears rather than leave muddy tracks up the causeway and by the door. So polite.

Younger folks today won't understand how epic this was to watch when it came out. This was really one of the first times that a big number of extras were combined great CGI was used to have a battle of epic scale that hasn't been seen since rare films like Waterloo or Gettysburg. 20 years later at it seems like every other action blockbuster has a big CGI battle like this.
