@C0wT1dd1es he was primarily a shape shifting strategist. He won a fight with a notable character and took him prisoner by out-singing him. When a Numenorian king thinks he defeated him, Sauron capitulated and went into full "You are so grand and great and big and strong, I am so very helpless and at your mercy now," and the king took him home as a "prisoner" who eventually got so much freedom and power he literally ran Numenor with a cult. Most of his moves in the earlier ages are "He cleverly talked his way out of trouble" "he was horribly wounded by a pet dog" "and then when his enemies had defeated his forces or his master, he sneakily fled." He seduces and he lies, and he was specifically forbidden a "Fair form" because he couldn't be trusted to look pretty.

Melkor was known as Morgoth or 'Dark Enemy' following his killing of Finwë and his theft of the Silmarils. He was never again called Melkor by elves or men. The Balrog were members of the Maiar that attuned their song to Melkor's when he introduced Discord to the singing before the throne of Eru Ilúvatar before the world was made. He was eventually cast out of the Door of Night by the Valar. The summary of Fëanor (son of Finwë, see above) as 'the asshole elf' is pretty apt. He was the whole reason that the elves went back to Middle Earth from Valinor. Basically everything that happens in The Lord of the Rings has a root cause of 'because Fëanor was a dickbag.' Galadriel, who was his niece and especially good at reading people's hearts, didn't trust or like him at all. The Istari (wizards) were the five most powerful, wise, and trusted Maiar who were sent to Middle Earth by the Valar to seek out and work against Sauron. They were forbidden to reveal the extent of who and what they were to the world, though. The blue wizards traveled to the east and were never seen again. One of Tolkein's pet thoughts about his lore was that no one should know everything, even the author. He believed that there should always be mystery, and the fate of the blue wizards was one of those things that he never clarified. The reason that not everyone just takes a boat to the undying lands is that they were removed from the world by the Valar. You can only get there if the Valar let you go.

Galadriel was more similar to Feanor than she was capable of admitting, it is written black on white in the Silmarillion. Feanor was much, MUCH more than an asshole, he invented the alphabet Elves use, made the Silmarilli (which means they were his) something the Valr themselves didn't know how to make, distrusted Melkor from the start, founded the Lambergolmoli (basically a university), and had pretty good reasons to distrust the Valr (that released Morgoth twice on the world). Besides, if he had not been "a dickbag" there would have been no Middle Earth either since the Valar let Angband fester. Remind me who saved Ciridan from the first wave of orcs? Oh, yes, Feanor and his followers. Why are people so keen on making an interesting character flat?

I like the Valar and Fingolfin and all the Vanyar, but they're all holier than thou saints that I can't relate to. Feanor isn't the best of people, but he at least feels real.

that forum posts is wrong, the silmarilli were NOT reproducable, even were the two trees restored. they DID consume a measure of feanors power, and the mastery with which they were constructed is something none even amongst the valar could replicate. they were singular and absolutely priceless, as priceless as the trees from which their captured light shone in the first place. also, tristan should definitely have mentioned that the force and potence of his spirit was such that the act of his birth turned his mothers body to ash. the name feanor literally translates as Spirit of Fire.

It is said he fell into a "deep sleep" and for thousands of years stayed put, but when the dwarfs started digging too deep to find Mithril, after they'd got the rings from Sauron (aka when Sauron's evil power was spread throughout Middle-Earth), those two things combined awakened him, eventually. Brought him out of a comma, basically. So he wasn't really awake for all that time, he was as though in a suspended animation.

Actually, Fëanor was pretty confident that he couldn't make any more Silmarils: "For the less even as for the greater there is some deed that he may accomplish but once only; and in that deed his heart shall rest. It may be that I can unlock my jewels, but never again shall I make their like; and if I must break them, I shall break my heart, and I shall be slain; first of all the Eldar in Aman." He was a bit of a drama queen and still a dick for not giving up the Silmarils, which could have saved the two trees and restored light to Aman.

But for real though fuck all y’all.” And then they get stolen anyway and instead of coping he takes a shitload of elves, swears vengeance, and becomes a war criminal, all in the space of like two pages.

Yeah, that part of the book was rushed over real quick. Hard to imagine 'Actual Satan and Giant Spider show up to wreck the world, kill the king, steal the jewels and fuck off' could be condensed into so little, but here we are. Sarumon of Many Colours makes somewhat less sense to me personally, but oh well. I'm curious why Oromë *shouldn't* associate with blue. But the fact that the two Istari who served the same Valar were also the same colour always seemed to imply that they were connected.

About the thing with Feanor and the boats: There were this race of sea Elves, who made the best boats ever. They loved these boats as much a Feanor loved the Silmarils. Feanor said "gimmie the boats, I want to use them" they said "no" and so he killed all of them. The first time that an elf had ever been killed by anything but an orc. He killed all of them, used the boats to sail to a place, and then BURNED THE BOATS FOR NO REASON. About the undying lands: Some guys - Aragorns ancestors - tried to sail there and they got obliterated by God. God, aka Illuvitar, said "nobody can go there if I don't put you there", these guys got cockey and tried it. Their boats got sunk, their home city got smashed into the sea, and almost all of them died. Nobody else tried it.

And then Illuvitar bent the world so that if you sail west you just follow the Earth's curve, but elves are capable of sailing "straight" to Valinor instead of following the curve.

They got to the Undying Lands and as soon as they stepped on them a fucking mountain range collapsed on top of the army killing everyone.

"The Song of Durin" is one of my favourite poems. I would absolutely love an adaptation of LOTR with all the boring poetry and singing given the royal treatment, instead of the combat. This has definitely inspired my art brain. The blue wizards for me would be twins. I drew one with a torch and one with a lantern, both with blue lighting. Tear drops on their cheeks because they are blue and sad. One is more modern with a lantern while the other with the torch prefers the primitive arts of magic. I love these characters and I thank the Lore Librarian and everyone in the drawfee team for inspiring such a sad and beautiful non-Gandolf duo

Tolkien was a huge linguistic nerd and here’s some obscure deep lore; the different languages of elves means that the guy who helped Sauron/Annatar make the rings names his group of smiths a double meaning joke in his two languages, so they can either be like, “a brotherhood” , or “The Semen Squad” And Tolkien absolutely knew this and so did Celebrimbor because he spoke both languages involved but if I recall correctly his smiths only spoke the one.
