The flight to the ford by Arwen while being pursued by Black Riders. Uses all the same settings as 720p, which is why the video is so crisp. Hope you enjoy!

What really makes this scene is the phenomenal skill of the stunt rider, Jane Abbott, on the Andalusian stallion Florian, who played the Elven horse Asfaloth. It's pretty well-known that Viggo Mortensen bought Florian for Jane after shooting, but he also stabled his other horses purchased from the shoot (a bay Dutch Warmblood stallion Uraeus, who played Brego, and a chestnut stallion Kenny, who played Hasufel) at the New Zealand ranch owned by Jane and her veterinarian husband. The two of them kept up the horses' daily care and exercising, and Florian, although retired, often performed dressage and skipping routines at local equestrian events. As of November 2020, all of these horses have passed away after long and comfortable retirements.

Iconic scene: A Film 4 interview with Peter Jackson showed that he wanted to make the Black Riders CGI with their movement and fluidity to make them more creepier. But due to budget costs he had to resort to what you see in this scene. I appreciate the advantages CGI brings but I'm relieved this scene turned out the way it did :)

Its cheaper. Nowadays both LOTR and The Hobbit would have been entirely churned out by PC's. If you thought The Hobbit Trilogy was bad, look at any recent film. Everything they can possibly get away with is done by CGI Enjoy the LOTR Trilogy, It's only 2 decades old, but it is unlikely we will ever see anything quite like it again. It was developed in that sweet spot in the late 90's early 2000's, where CGI was available, developed, and affordable, but not so much so, that you could do anything you wanted, if you had a budget. This trilogy is a great mixture of all kinds of movie making techniques.

I think Lotr presents the Nazgul best without removing realism. They were human once and their hollow form and blacked out faces just add to the tension they create. I wasn’t a fan of how they were presented in the hobbit, and thought them much more scary in Lotr as a child because they were so within this world but also removed from this world at the same time if that makes sense.

It was magical watching the scene where Arwen arrives. I was in a packed cinema. The movie builds up our curiosity towards the elves. When Arwen says to Aragorn: "I do not fear them." There is actually a good reason for that. She was really afraid of losing Frodo to them. She has been around hundreds(s), maybe even more, than Aragorn. And is also the daughter of Elrond who was at the "Last Alliance". That is no mean thing. Arwen is not without power in her own right. Probably as much as her brothers. If Aragorn can chase off the Nazgul on Weathertop, it is not hard to imagine that Arwen would not be a 'push over' either. A pissed off High Elf, which she is, like Glorfindal, would be a terrible individual to fight anytime, male or female.

The first time I saw this I was all like NOOOOO... That's supposed to be Glorfindel....and then SHE| called up the flood and again I was miffed, as that was supposed to be Elrond... however, after re-watching many times, I have made peace with the places the movies deviated from the books. Perhaps there are things in the movies that are not exactly as they were in the books, but at least very well made. This change was minor compared to having the elves show up at Helm's Deep! OK... they changed some bits of the story for the movie. It took me a while to get over "THAT'S not how it was WRITTEN," but I've come to love both versions. I have to admit that i like BETTER how the movies did the bit about the lighting of the beacons. In the books it was just something that happened, was noticed, Shadowfax was spurred on... in the movie it is something profound.

One thing I found out that was interesting was the reason the Nazgul were hesitant to cross the river at first. In the Silmarillion, the chapters on the Valar mention how water was the element that held the echoes of the music of the Ainur, and one of them in particular, Ulmo, had a power over water and had his presence in every river and tributary. So the Nazgul, being corrupted shadow creatures of Sauron, were really hesitant to get near something so connected with what is their opposite. Idk I just think that's neat how there's more to it than "oh no water" which is what I thought it was when I watched this for the first time

I'm guessing also that in Middle Earth, gender roles were pretty fixed, and women were not expected to engage in combat or go on dangerous missions. The women who wielded great powers like Galadriel functioned more as spellcasters, psychics and healers, as opposed to being warriors. Eowyn was an exception, and even then, she kind of went to battle without most people in her kingdom knowing. That was why the Witch King was surprised to learn that he was defeated by a lady.

Could never write them today, because they don't moralize about the Power of Diversity and Multiculturalism, and hey actually PROMOTE nationalistic pride and the idea of "pure blood lines" and all kids of taboo subjects like that. Did you know that Mexico actually has very strict immigration laws? And yet they find the idea of America enforcing the laws we have on the books to be personally insulting. They also are having a huge problem with illegal migrants from Central America travelling through and moving into Mexico trying to reach the US, and are working on....wait for it...building a wall on their southern border to keep them out. I loved her story in the first film and wish it had been continued in this fashion. I understand fans were up in arms over Arwen fighting at Helm's Deep although I fail to understand why. Why can't Arwen be an active agent in the story instead of a passive bystander accommodating Aragon's story? Having said that you do want the bittersweet payoff at the end so I understand the separation of the A+A in the latter two films. However my point remains. Her story should have continued to actively assist in the destruction of the ring by other means instead of moping. I love Arwen in all three films but my fav version of her is definitely in FOTR. Her stand off against the Nazgul is Brilliant.

I love this scene, but I would have love to see Frodo riding Glorfindel's horse, challenging the Nazgul, like in the books.

Goddamit, just read this same chapter in the book, it's totally different. It's my favourite film series, but when you read the book again you realise how much was changed for the film :( Screw Arwen, I want Glorfindel!

Arwen was chosen becuase PJ wanted a deeper love story with her and aragorn so she had to be fetured in more of the scenes. I personally love Arwen and wish that she had even more screen time.

TopherXC Yeah, I suppose compromises always have to be made in the film industry.

I prefer this scene with Arwen because Glorfindel wasn't in the horse chase part.In the book he basically ordered his horse to run with Frodo on its back and Glorfindel followed them on foot. But IMO the river part is better in the book as the Nazgul took their cloaks off and revealed their true forms ,plus Frodo was standing alone against them so it felt more dangerous for him.

Joe Hird this is the reason why I loved Eowyn more in the books. because she actually did more than Arwen did yet Arwen gets a bigger importance in the movies. Glorfindel doesn't appear anymore after this scene so he'll seem like a throwaway character if that happened.

It's meant to showcase that although Frodo has a great many -good- qualities about him (kindness, gentleness, mercy, compassion, great resistance to corruption and so on) it also shows that he isn't a perfect being. He has fears like any other person, and when confronted with something very dark, dangerous and deadly, he is stricken by fear, and attempts to move away from it; but even then he denies the ringwraiths the ring by refusing to hand it over. He later evolves as a character, as well.

Crisp 480p !! That gave me a right chuckle 🤣

bearing the One ring for so long without being corrupted entirely is already a feat of great strength if you ask me :p Isildur just held the Ring for a moment and was already overthrown by it's power. it took the whole journey to mordor before the Ring could finally tempt frodo to forsake his oath to his friends to destroy it. and Elrond and Gandalf had different reasons to deny the Ring: they bear the elven rings of power, along with Galadriel, which Sauron coveted just as much as the One

The problem is Frodo was stabbed with Morgol blade by the Witchking which released toxic dust within Frodo body rendering him comatose. Notice he was unable to stand on his feet so how he could fight let alone ride a horse alone in that state?
@saradomin886 жыл бұрын
This scene was amazing! but it was actually the powerful Elf warrior Glorfindel, who takes Frodo on his Horse Asfaloth, outruns them, and drives off the Nazgul while tending to frodo's wounds. He's so formidable that even the witch king of Angmar, feared him and fled from their last encounter in the battle for the north. It was also Glorfindel who prophesied at that moment that the the witch king will be not(cannot) killed by a man. If you pay attention, you'll notice there's only 8 riders there, the witch king feared Glorfindel so much he didn't dare engage him.

Glorfindel sent him off on his horse for literally the last mile sprint to the Ford, but he had found aragorn and the hobbits three days beforehand and was tirelessly driving them the remaining distance to Rivendell with the Nazgul hot on their trail.
