Lord Of The Rings - How To Make Boromir's Leather Vambraces / Arm Guards

This past Christmas, I got involved in the Fools With Tools Treasure Trade. A lot of makers from the Facebook group Fools With Tools gathered to play Secret Santas.
I received an awesome gift from the very talented prop maker Karolien Hinz, and I needed to make one for Rasmus Loen Steensguaard, an also very talented blacksmith from Norway (check his channel here: / axrac .
When I heard he likes Lord of the Rings, I decided to make him a pair of leather arm guard/bracers/vambraces. In the movie, when Boromir dies, Aragorn starts wearing Boromir's arm guards and I thought it would be nice to make Rasmus these vambraces, as a symbol of friendship.
I used 2.6mm vegetable tanned leather and 2mm cow hide. Once everything was ready, I died the leather brown, and stitched the hide with my sewing machine. Then it was a simple assembly, stitching by hand all around the first piece and three layers.
I really like making thing for others and I think they turned out pretty well. Rasmus seems to like them, so I'm happy.

@RedSmith

Thank you! It's an anti-spread sheet. It's use to keep the leather from getting to thin and to spread when you tool it. Not always necessary, but it helps a lot keeping the right dimensions of the piece you're working on.

Hello!! Amazing amazing work. I know it’s been a few years, but Im working on a boromir cosplay and would love to know if you have patterns for the pieces and some information on supplies? What dye did you use? Can I attempt this with a limited amount of leather working knowledge?
@RedSmith
@RedSmith 19 күн бұрын
Hello, and thank you for your kind words. All my patterns are available at www.redsmithleatherwork.com. You can surely attempt it with a limited amount of knowledge. Pratice is the key to master a skill and mistake are part of the learning process. With time and practice, you'll know what dye you prefer compared to a different one, and that's how you'll get better at the craft. Have fun and thanks for watching!

Merci encore 😊

Beautiful work!!!! I’m interested in learning what kind of material you used to transfer the design on to the the leather and how you got the design on to that material? Also would the design have been permanent with out using the swivel knife if you just embossed it?
@RedSmith
@RedSmith 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jon!! I used tracing paper specially design for leathercraft. One side is like normal tracing paper the other one is very smooth. You can draw the desired design, wet the leather and then emboss it by using a leather stylus. Once the leather is dry, the design stays. You can stop there or use a swivel knife to cut it and tool the work. :)

Thank you Red I actually went to my local Tandy leather today and got the supplies. I’ll tag you on Instagram when I finish my first attempt. I’m sure it won’t be pretty

It’s beautiful but it would be super awesome if you’d also give a verbal description of what you’re doing as you do it… For those of us trying to get into leatherworking knowing your process and tools would be a big help in getting started on making scrollwork on projects. Thanks for the video :)

Thanks a lot for the kind words. I usually add a description to the video to explain what I'm doing when there is no voice over, but feel free to ask questions about anything you don't understand. Thanks for watching.

Beautiful work there! Where would one find the templates for the leather pieces and the artwork? Did you designed them yourself? I think I'll take a shot at making a pair! Cheers

Beautiful work!! Maybe a really dumb question but how do you get the pattern onto the wax paper? Thank you from a beginner!
@RedSmith
@RedSmith 15 күн бұрын
Thanks you. You print it and then trace it on the wax paper. Or you can try to print directly onto wax paper. Thanks for watching
