The Lighting of the Beacons must be one of the most masterfully filmed sequences in all cinematic history. Translating it from page to film was a tall enough order, but to compose that score to accompany it? The hand of the divine at work! I tear up whenever I watch that scene. Profound cinema. 😭

One of Jackson's most unfair omissions - and he could have done it with 5 seconds of screen time - was not showing that Denethor also had a Palantir, and had fallen under Sauron's spell long before these events. But it didn't turn D. evil, it stripped him of all hope, and the ability to trust allies. Like everyone else who Sauron touched, he could not help himself. In earlier years D. was an honorable and strong Steward, though he did favor Boromir - another wedge Sauron used to corrupt and cripple Gondor.

At the same time, Sauron seemed to have flattered Denethor, to have fed his ego, and to have convinced him that whatever meager hopes Gondor might have could be realized only in Denethor and his heir themselves.

As you said, Pipping was compelled by the Palantir to look. Also, his curiosity paid off (he is very curious), since Sauron thinking he had the ring distracted him from patrolling Mordor, giving Frodo and Sam the chance to remain unnoticed as they walked to mount doom. It was a one week walk without practically no food or water.

🌮 yeah, YT gets picky with more than a few seconds of unmuted music for some reason. I cannot imagine why the copyright holders would get upset for videos that include commentary among short passages - those just whet people's appetite to stream or buy on disc the complete films.

We come to it last...by the time this came out we were completely invested and obsessed. Some reactors don't realize at the time we had to wait years in between their release, the anticipation was beyond belief..I will never forget recognizing Smeagol instantly by his eyes, Andy Serkis is a legend. Witnessing the beacons being lit...and later feeling the Rohirrim charge in your seats was one of the greatest cinematic experiences in history...chills forever
