I'm not a big Tolkien reader, and yet I know some basic things, like the fact that elves are old, wise, and hard to fool. But in this show, every elf takes turns acting like a dumb, immature child who is easily fooled, and even after realizing it, they still make stupid, childish decisions. That's just lazy writing and makes for a very bad show, even as a standalone piece

@@mattcascade That’s fair enough, I think the problem is when people who usually enjoy a show like that purposefully choose to hate it because it’s meant to be LOTR, rather than trying to let themselves enjoy it. @@BeckyDoesBlogThe title has "Lord of the Rings" in it, so why is it a problem if people hate it because it's meant to be LOTR? I think it's fair to have that expectation.
@swbuza2 ай бұрын
@@gemgem-hl7ii The Lord of the Rings is not just the title of a book. It's the title of a person -- Sauron. He's in the show. It's about him. Ergo, it is about the lord of the rings. This show isn't a rehash of what Tolkien wrote, on purpose. It's designed to answer the questions of where was Sauron and what was he doing during the undocumented periods of the 2nd Age. It's a new story on purpose, but it is still *about* the lord of the rings. It doesn't have to be about the novel to still be about the same guy.
@gemgem-hl7ii2 ай бұрын
@@swbuza Your point does not invalidate my point. Some people can have that mindset, sure, but I'm saying that it's fair to expect a show with "The Lord of the Rings" in the title to be faithful to the existing canon. My question was how it would be a problem if it's a fair assumption
@halneufmille2 ай бұрын
In "fan fiction", there is "fan". They usually care about and respect the source material, as much as they can with their limited talent. Using a known intellectual property to lure fans in, but changing things with little regard to the original author's vision may be better characterized as "Corporate fiction".

If the showrunners and writers were actually fans of LOTR, it would’ve been a different show and a better representation. I’m wondering why since Amazon spent so much money, they didn’t think of how it would affect Tolkien’s legacy. I understand why the LOTR fans were disappointed

With all do respect, I admire and even envy your positivity, but one must question when positivity becomes a hinderance to actual critical viewing. I understand that you feel that hate watching a show would be a waste of your time, but ignoring the glaring issue of the show's disrespect for the source material, in my opinion, is also a waste of everyone's time, not only yours but the people working on this show, who are clearly not the best showrunners or witers out there, that being said I'd wish they'd improve their work and for that they recquire a fair dose of constructive criticism, perhaps even a bit of a harsher criticism wouldn't be unwarrented as long as it doesn't devolve into personal attacks or threats. Of course, I also believe in fairness, and as such one has to admit the good parts of the show as well, it's definetely visually impressive, and the actors are in general pretty good, with a special mention to the 3 main Dwarven characters that, personally, I feel are the best part of the show. Sadly, I think a lot of people share my rather bleak view of modern media and the state of the world in general, so lashing out against shows or movies like this is a bit of cathartic release from a lot of the internal struggles we've been going through. Like I said before, I envy someone who can look at the world with your positivity, I just hope we can understand each other despite our completely opposite views on these matters.

@@renatonovis Thank you for the fair and well thought-out comment. I’m wondering why the writers and showrunners took on the project of creating this show in the first place when they don’t have any understanding of LOTR, surely that job would’ve been better on someone who knows the lore and is also a fan to some level? I’m not the best person to give constructive criticism, but I’m sure they’ll have received that from someone, so we can only hope they’ll improve in the next season. Either way, when watching the first season, I surprised myself with actually enjoying it more than I expected I would, but I’m also aware that I’m separating it completely from LOTR, which no-one should have to do. I appreciate you articulating your point so clearly and I know I’m in the minority with my unwarranted optimism

Boo. Stop mansplaining and overanalyzing. Someone should apply "actual critical" points to your ignorance of a lot of the text. You say the show has glaring disprespect for the source material, and you find someone who's clearly not dug in for decades and force them into it. It's despicable : ) Why not find people who know more and have discussions about it with them? Are you afraid to find actual textual evidence from someone who knows their stuff? Just skip the comment next time, or come debate someone who knows what they're talking about. I'll start, to be fair : ) This show has just as much ridiculousness towards the lore as any single one of the PJ movies. It also does somethings better than PJ. Music and visual effects are on par if not better. For source material, you have an abundance of texts, an appreciation and representation of the author's own ambiguous, unpublished stories. They're quite frankly treating the lore like feather dusting a michealangelo sculpture. Come at me, don't dunk new comers.

Anarion hasn't been removed. He'll appear later in the show. In the 64 generations between Elros and Aragorn II, there are only about 5 wives mentioned and zero daughters.
