Fun Fact: Around 14:00, you are shown the army of Isengard, and they are chanting in the Black Speech of Mordor. Anyway, director Peter Jackson wanted the army to sound as organic as possible. So he went to a cricket stadium (I think it was) and recorded the fans sitting in the stands during half-time while the words were shown on the oversized screen.

Aragorn survived his "little tumble off the cliff," but Viggo Mortensen nearly drowned floating down the river. The current pinned him under against a rock, and he was only just able to free himself.

When I watched this film in the cinema, some moments in the relationship between King Theoden and Aragorn seemed strange to me. Only in the extended version there is a scene where Aragorn's age is mentioned. He is over 80 years old and fought alongside Theoden's father. Theoden was still a small child then. That's why it's always recommended to watch extended versions.

"This movie makes war look like art." Peter Jackson does battles really well.

Yes but at the same time put into the movies what the books do. Not to glorify war. Èowyn learns that the hard way. No spoilers. Also. In his time there were many things that were tempting young men to leave their loved ones. Often taking braided locks from their lovers to keep close along with the way.

I have to disagree, because he shows elves as "formation fighters", which is absolutely stupid due to the fact that they have an absolutely TINY BIRTHRATE and thus cant afford to lose people in war. The elves Jackson brings to Helms Deep are from Lorien ... and thus TREEBOUND ARCHERS ... and yet he does the bad "let's stand in a line in open view" combat technique. The same is true for the very start of "Fellowship" ... Also: Legolas doing all these outrageous things is awful ... and NOT COOL!

Tolkien didn't glorify wat at all, he saw it up close and person and knew how ugly it is. He doesn't shy away from showing it is noble to stand and fight when the situation call for it though.
@custardflan Жыл бұрын
Nobody said Tolkien or Jackson glorified war. I just said Jackson does battles well. You can track the strategy of the overall battle and the.challenges Individuals are facing. Jackson has commented on this several times. Obviously Tolkien didn't glorify war. He wrote: "War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

Omg the waiting before the siege of helm's deep will kill us! What a point in the movie to stop the video. :O Anxiety and stress is through the roof before this battle happens, you can easily see how great they built the story into it. Just insane world building but also character development. So one week? Damn this week will take forever. You can only imagine the feelings when we watched this for the first time in cinema around 2002 or so. On a side note, it would be nice if you included at least 3-5 extra minutes in each video, on explaining your thoughts behind what you saw earlier. This is something that makes the reactions much better at the end of the day, and by extension the channel itself which will only benefit you. Just saying. Keep it up cheers!

To some psychologists, Wormtongue serves as an archetypal sycophant. Tolkien scholars note that Tolkien based Wormtongue on the untrustworthy character Unferth in Beowulf. He is presumptive, behaving as if he already rules Rohan, and exemplifies lechery, as correctly guessed by Gandalf; he hopes to become rich, and to take Éowyn as the woman he desires. The name Gríma derives from the Old English or Icelandic word meaning "mask", "helmet" or "spectre" Tolkien scholars have noted that Wormtongue's interaction with Gandalf in Meduseld has an Old English counterpart in the epic poem Beowulf: the account is closely based on the hero Beowulf's dealings with Unferth in Heorot, where Unferth is King Hrothgar's "ambiguous" spokesman; Unferth is thoroughly discredited by Beowulf, as Wormtongue is by Gandalf. The critic Charles W. Nelson describes Wormtongue's attitude as an example of presumption, behaving "as if he were already on the throne" of Rohan. Nelson notes that Richard Purtill suggests that Tolkien is intentionally embodying the seven deadly sins in his characters. He quotes from one of Tolkien's letters to this effect: "the encouragement of good morals in this real world, by the ancient device of exemplifying them in unfamiliar embodiments, that may tend to 'bring them home.'" Clark writes that Dwarves exemplify greed, Men pride, Elves envy, Ents sloth, Hobbits gluttony, Orcs anger, and Wormtongue lechery. That lechery is, Nelson notes, correctly guessed by Gandalf: that he would gain a large share in Meduseld's treasure, and Éowyn's hand in marriage, "on whose person Grima had long cast lecherous eyes and lascivious looks", and indeed in Éomer's words that Grima had "haunted her steps". in this case Elves envy was eventually what became of them because they cannot die in the same way Men do as death was their gift from Eru Îlluvatar! Mainly to allow their Fëa(spirit) to go beyond the circles of the world (halls of Eru which those of Rohan and Númenor call the “Golden Halls Of Their Fathers, Of Whom Of Mighty Company”)❤️ many if not all don’t know that. Even the VALAR and Maiar themselves became envious of the gift of an Men. It was so their spirit can escape from Morgoth ever chasing after them and messing with their spirits. As they dealt with Morgoth for a long time. Some say even before Galadriel’s brother found the first men ever to walk the earth; their ancestors dealt with his terror and dread, which also lead to him warping them from the start to live shorter lives. They apparently were meant to be much longer lived! But yeah Númenoreans lived up to 500 plus years each and Elronds Brother Elros lived beyond that as he was formally an elf like his brother. Not just any elf can do the switch. It’s all due to their ancestors.

🌄Aragorns ring(there is a few shots during the movie where you see a good look on it being worn but also in that book that has the drawing and history of that ring Saruman spoke about after Grima brought it up to him(Saruman) once belonged to Galadriel’s dearest elder brother Finrod, Named Felagund by the dwarves he befriended, they gifted him one of their fortresses of Nargothrond and he even built it with them). He was the most famous Elf in the Legendarium aside from his uncle Fingolfin! It ended up being given to Barahir’s ancestors and Barahir is closest relative to Aragorn through the line of Arathorn! And they connect directly to the house of Bëor. Which all three houses of the Edain were found and befriended by Finrod. First to discover Men before anyone else !! Not even the Valar save Melkor long long long long ago. They’ve been aware of him for a very long time and have been fighting him almost as long as the elves did but with no help during those darker times before the sun and moon were even born into the world after melkor and Ungoliant killed the two trees of silver and gold in Valinor. By the time the Gondorians lost Eärnur the Anorian line of Elendil got their cheeks clapped so hard they were reduced to a lesser tribe who had lost a shit ton of status and a lot of symbols of their power like the Ring of Barahir or Narsil. The Gondorian Stewards, especially those like Denethor, looked down on their northern brethren as pretenders and foreigners. Aragorn not only had served in Gondor's army for a time but was chosen to carry on many of the ancient symbols of the line of Elendil like Barahir and reforging Narsil into Andúril. Throw in a fancy banner made by his elf GF and he had the symbols and treasures of a king. Denethor lighting himself on fire also contributed along with Faramir willingly surrendering his authority to Aragorn helped. An heirloom of the Ñoldor/ Vanyar(Galadriel and Finrod’s kin) But as I said, it's got SO much value. Makes me want to say something similar to what Gandalf said about the mithril vest that was more valuable than the shire itself. Hahaa And so ofc Aragorn for many reasons knows the history of that very ring he wears. I believe as it belonged to Galadriel’s brother, either she gave it to him or it made it down the line directly from Aragorn’s mighty ancestry.

No matter what happens, the elves are doomed. If Sauron gets the Ring, they are exposed. If Frodo destroys the Ring, they lose their power to maintain their realms, like Lothlorien and Rivendell.
@Makkaru112 Жыл бұрын
It was mainly due to the fact due to Morgoth’s Ring. So the fallen Maia leaving middle earth is another staple in the long defeat as it’s called. For the elves. Many many chose to stay though and did all they could to help mankind with Aragorn. No spoilers Yanniverse. Don’t worry. ❤❤❤❤❤ PS Those three rings were never touched by Sauron so it’s definitely due to Morgoth’s Ring that caused the world itself to slowly bleed away it’s magic and splendour.

The bit with Aragorn falling off the cliff didn't happen in the book. They threw that in for unnecessary drama, and as a framing device to fill in some of the back story of the relationship between him and Arwen. Jackson does throw in too many extraneous "dramatic moments" that don't really help the story, IMO. But these are still great movies, and great adaptations, despite these flaws.
@rikk319 Жыл бұрын
Film and prose are two different artistic mediums, and you can't straight-off just copy a novel into a script. That's like saying you're disappointed that a song doesn't copy a painting perfectly. Compared to most adaptations from novel to film, Peter Jackson did an extraordinary job. I remember watching The Princess Bride the first time and loving it...and then a year later I read the original book. Both the film script and the novel were written by the same author, and they still don't translate across 100%...but they're both still wonderful in their own right. If your expectations is a carbon copy of the original, then you will be ever disappointed.

The babies being suited up for war gets me everytime too. Although at the same time I get frustrated because if that was my son there's absolutely no way they could keep me hidden with the other women & children while they threw him out onto a battlefield. I always think "if they're giving a sword to a 7 year old boy, there should be women and older teen girls fighting too!" Why not, when they think everyone's going to die anyway? The women and children will just be butchered after all the soldiers are dead even if they don't fight so all it can do is help even out the numbers.
@incogneato790 Жыл бұрын
It isn't about fighting ability, it is about survival of the people. If 90% of the men are killed in a war but the women are kept safe, they can rebuild their population quickly enough. If 90% of the women were killed off (and on average women would be easier to kill) then they are done for as a people. Men are far more expendable, it isn't sexism, it is being practical.
@vadalia3860 Жыл бұрын
@@incogneato790 That excuse doesn't work here. They explicitly state that the army is here to kill every man, woman, and child of Rohan. If 90% of the men die, there is no rebuilding because all the women & children hiding in the back are going to be butchered once the men fall.
@incogneato790 Жыл бұрын
@@vadalia3860 No, that makes it even more important to protect the women. Rohan's objective is to survive as a people, and that makes it very important to protect the women. If you put them out on the front lines right at the start, most of the women are going to get wiped out even when they are not facing an overwhelming force, and then where are you? Doing that would HELP Isengard reach it's goal. You only put women out on the front lines in that kind of battle at the end when the men are all but wiped out and there is no other choice. Let the men absorb as much of the killing at the start and do as much damage as they can so if the women do have to fight at the end they face a reduced enemy that has already expended a good deal of their force. Making individual exceptions for a small number of very skilled female warriors is OK, but in Eowyn's case she is also one of only 3 living members of the ruling family. One of them needs to hang back to preserve the leadership structure and it makes more sense for it to be her than her brother who was the more experienced fighter or uncle who was as more experienced unlike to be able to produce another heir. If they are killed, she becomes queen and can fight as she chooses. Her sneaking off to the final battle was actually kind of irresponsible. Her duty was to stay back to take up the throne if the battle went ill. It worked out well because the story is a fiction.
@vadalia3860 Жыл бұрын
@@incogneato790 I never said put them on the front line, I said they should be in the fight too. And that fight you talk about where you put in the women "when the men are all but wiped out and there is no other choice"- that's exactly the kind of fight they're in right now.
@incogneato790 Жыл бұрын
@@vadalia3860 They weren't at that point yet. If the forces of Isenguard got into the caves, then it would have been that kind of fight. I'll say that the women there should have been armed, but I don't think they had enough weapons for that.

Deeper version: This will help make sense of the future movies. Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will and individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf and lived among them whilst they were unknowing and he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity and simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves) Gandalf The Grey/White Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful. However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) and the other Istari (the order sent around the same time and of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is and a student of the Vala by the name Nienna and Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being and Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” and basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing. Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea Arien is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon.
