I wish Helm had been the main character; having him journey from a battle-obsessed King to someone who realizes that his lust for war and glory has nearly brought doom to his people, and then redeeming himself by saving his people by punching everyone to death would have been a great stand-alone film that fits the tragedy in so many of Tolkien's stories.
@eriksolfors17 күн бұрын
@@Leprechaunproduction but from Helms POV he would have died before the war was over, what next? End of the movie? Or would the audience just hear an epilogue about what happened, or follow another character - which one then? We got to see pretty much what you describe in the movie but from the daughter’s pov.
@Leprechaunproduction17 күн бұрын

@eriksolfors16 күн бұрын
@ so you’re okay with changing the lore to make Helm kill Wulf, which he didn’t do in Tolkiens work. Also, ending a movie because someone dies is not a good way to show a movie-conflict like this. It would be like having the LOTR movies end with the death of Boromir.
@Leprechaunproduction16 күн бұрын
@@eriksolfors If given the choice, yes, I would make the change, as having the main conflict be between Helm and Wulf makes for a more focused and intimate story. As to ending the film when Wulf dies, I believe that would be a logical choice: Wulf's death would resolve the story's conflict, at which point the story is pretty much over. Having LOTR end when Boromir dies would not make any sense, as the conflict of the story (Sauron attempting to get his ring back) would not have been resolved.
@fastage10116 күн бұрын
@@LeprechaunproductionI just personally don’t think that would be a great ending. You would be left with an incomplete ending. You also hear them talk about marriage and I’m assuming that would still be the plot. I personally enjoyed the movie and did feel worried about characters dying, but I also enjoy a ruthless bad guy which they did.

As Alex pointed out, it was clearly just a dumb license renewal movie and it shows, especially with the bad animation. For LOTR fans, this was not a good movie and Hera especially was a bad fanfic mary sue character they created that was just an unnamed character in one line in the book. She completely ruined an already meh story, making her so important and the best at everything... just from her name alone we can see how bad the writers are, Hera is a greek name and Tolkien's story was based on English fantasy and history, not Greek. And as Alex said, her scene and just being able to get the Eagles to do anything was horrible writing and mary sue nonsense, the Eagles are not just random big animals like AJ thinks, even for Maiar like Gandalf it's not so simple to just get the Eagles to do things for them. AJ so desperate to try and defend the character with "oh if you like shield-maidens!", no dude, ppl like well written characters not just cause she's a woman someone will like her, stop trying to find excuses for bad characters just cause it's a female character.

@@purefoldnz3070 There was a lot of unnecessary member berries in there for sure. Gandalf is known to have traveled Middle Earth to establish relations and aquire different stories from people around Middle Earth. In the Jackson universe, its entirely plausible that he would seek out the story of the war from the surviving daughter of the former king of Rohan. As for staying faithful to the lore, the film adapted literally everything that was written in the short few paragraphs that were available, right down to the wild men being fearful of some kind of wraith in the night they thought was the vengeful ghost of Helm, Helm being frozen standing upright, and Saruman taking residence of Isengard after the war happens. The only thing they changed was who killed Wulf. Wulfs army was still defeated by Frealaf in a surprise attack. The Jackson trilogy made massive changes to the established lore to fit the films to the point that certain events were changed entirely or didn't even happen. Where in the books does it say Legolas shot Saruman on top of Orthanc? Or that The Witch King broke Gandalf the Whites staff? So no, I'm not "full of it", I'm just not going with the narrative that it's complete trash and actually want to give it a fair shake instead of outright dismissing it. Its not for LotR fans, because its about a nameless nobody doing bad ass things while using "nobody heard about her" defense card. It's not for casuals, the plot is absurdly generic and predictable. You could guess how the film will be based on the teasers they provided. So yeah, it smells like a product of someone who was mad that there isn't a strong female (spoiler, LotR has 2 strong females), but since said person don't know about LotR and want to create their big moment, they elevated a character the autor didin't even care to give a name (just so you know the importance), but did it anyway just because its female. All for the sake of girlboss trope, the resume is basically: if everyone listen to her everything would be fine, because everyone is stupid except for 2 women.

The only major plot in the story that she had an indirect part in was the actual war starting. Helm killed Freca who demanded him to marry his daughter to Wulf. After that the unnamed daughter isn’t mentioned in the story again. Don’t personally have an issue with a female protagonist. But when a character is shoehorned in like she was in the movie just for the sake of it then that for me is an issue. Especially after her father and brothers died, with Frealaf in Dunharrow, she was most suited to lead those under siege. Fleshing her character out simply makes sense, and to give her narrative focus also works because she was one of the final characters alive. I would not mind Helms daughter to have some agency but she should have been just a supporting character in the film. In the age we are living right now women cannot be just a secondary or supporting character in someone elses story. No, they have to be the lead character of someone elses story while the actual main character Helm and therefore also Frealaf are sidelined into supporting characters instead. If this movie would have been made ten years ago there is no doubt that the main character would be Helm because it is that obvious what type of story this is. Yet the only reason why this even exists is only to WB retain the right to lord of the rings IP. Not because for the love of the adaptation to do it right but only because of pure money milking from the IP mixed with contemporary social norm these days.

No one would have minded this film had they made the female main go through the hero’s journey. Instead she’s instantly the best at everything and all of the men around her are morons. She’s the very definition of Mary Sue and girlboss. I love female leads in everything but this isn’t written well enough to pass the basic toxic-feminism sniff test.
@Imanmagnet0020 күн бұрын
The hell are you talking about? She isn't anywhere near the best at anything in the film. Hammerhand is the one that gets the most heroic feats, she honors him by carrying his legacy but also christening the Hornbug as Helm's deep for the respect Rohan had for their king. Her siblings, guardian and the rest of Rohan all get their moment and nowhere in the movie does Hera overshadow them.

@k--music20 күн бұрын
Wait what? Sure many of the men are stubborn but that’s a theme Tolkien wrote first. In the film she’s clearly not the best at everything, helm is the fighter and does everything he did in the book, she’s never even better at fighting than her shieldmaiden or her cousin, who saves the day every time he shows up including the end. I think the problem was more so staying too close to the two towers helms deep ending and the dialogue being very “it was snowing because it was winter” style on the nose narration.

@ZiroWatt20 күн бұрын
Eowyn wasnt some amazing fighter though. Nor was she some perfect character, she goes from losing hope after her brother dies and her father is mentally gone, to feeling she isnt doing enough as war comes, to getting rejected by aragorn, then to fighting in secret with Merry. As far as Ive heard here, Hera rejects a guy, then is the strongest and smartest character in a world of dumb and egotistical men, and wins every fight she starts. What makes this even worse is the fact that Hera takes credit for achievements Helm made in the lore.
@k--music20 күн бұрын
She was supposed to stay behind because she’s the last of Eorl’s line and was ordered to govern while Theoden and Eomer were at war, and presumably if they died. Aragorn actually does tell her to stay behind when she wants to go with him, and she says “am I not of the house of Eorl, a shieldmaiden and not a dry nurse?” And Aragorn says if it wasn’t her it would’ve been some captain with the same duty to stay behind, and she says something to the extent of them wanting her to stay because she’s a woman. I think she implies some history there of women of Eorl’s line fighting, and in the films she has that line about women learning long ago to wield a sword rather than die by it. In any case I think she’s *interpreting* the duty to stay as because she’s a woman when in reality it’s because Hama reminded Theoden that the people would accept her rule and she is the only one left. More so a character conflict than a gender one. She wants to fight but has a duty to stay behind. And there are notes about “fair and valiant women” in pre-Rohan history and the women did ride with Brego against the easterlings when they had to (which is what I assume she was talking about in two towers). So presumably this story could fit in. What was disappointing to me is that they do call out that Hera isn’t mentioned in history, but never explain why. So this could just be Eowyn’s version of the story.

The animation is likely inconsistent, because multiple studios were working on it, and not every studio has the same style, let alone the difference between each animator. Quality standards are also different. The differences between animators can be mitigated by being in the same animation team, and so having a unified lead to point out obvious differences, but if it's completely separate studios, good luck trying to get animation to look consistent.

Not really. Yeah, she doesn't have much of a character arc, but she ain't perfect and nobody has to accept it. The movie literally ends with her not being accepted (her choice). She leaves. A lot like the cousin. He's a smart, decent, humble person. Tries to do the right thing. And people don't listen to him. He doesn't have an arc either. The comparison to Ray is unfair, since Ray is shown to get stronger for no reason. Whereas Hera is the same at the beginning of the movie as she is at the end. That's the difference.
