This is what makes this game a masterpiece, a beautiful crafted and compelling narrative. I was in tears at the end.

If you pay attention in the scene where Jin chooses not to literally back the bus right over Yuna, you can pinpoint the moment Shimuras heart shatters. It’s not even that he was wrong for his beliefs, he tried so hard to keep to the code while saving his home that he was revealed to be a slave to it, that he might as well be snubbing the people he’s trying to protect.

Amazing video A lot of complaints towards the game is the lack of player agency on Jin's leniency towards the samurai code of honor or being the ghost. Especially after Sucker Punch's previous Infamous series. But I always love how the game do not give you agency for a reason, to tell you the story of Jin, Shimura, and how their actions impacts those around them, how the world they live in, the code that governs them, honor vs survival, influences them as a person. No one is arguably correct in the end of Tsushima, despite of how simple the black and white framing of the code of honor and the way of the ghost are presented in the first act. And the moment the game finally gives you agency at the ending, to choose between 2 choices that makes you instantly reflect on what the game has given you throughout your journey, it seriously broke me. The game's story is always framed as something simple in reviews, a simple binary opposition between jin and shimura, which it may be noit as simple as it seems. As you shown in this video, taken into perspective, no one is right, and no one is wrong.

I had the same arc with Shimura. At first I disliked his rigidity, but I grew to understand him as a compassionate and caring father, who ultimately was a slave to an aging custom in a changing world. So many of those throughout history. Without "The Ghost" all of Japan would've most likely succumbed to the Mongols. Even this unavoidable truth wasn't enough to bend his rules. You have to respect that kind of devotion. Fantastic analysis. I'd love to see your thoughts on Kazumasa after the Iki Island expansion. I absolutely loved his character. Such an interesting addition to the narrative. Great analysis.

Yes, I've been working on my (first) essay for now. There was so much revealed that I need to do multiple videos to break it all down. I feel like the DLC solidified Shimura's role in the overall story as being the better mentor to Jin, despite any weaknesses he had.

But the issue is that Jin's father was more creative with the strategies and tactics and quite a few of them broke from the honor code that the shimura had created and the thing is is that when we come through after our escape during act 2 in the beginning of act 3 the only people we hear bad mouth the ghost are the samurai who are coming into tsushima from the mainland and even then it feels like they don't have all the information

This was and is an amazing video.. it made me think so much more about Lord Shimura... This whole time I was more along the lines of “Heck Off, Uncle” But sheeesh... to be the Jito with the Nephew who is In your head, your son.. but in the Shogun’s head.. a Traitor.. Shit man...

Believe me, I was in the same boat as everyone else in the first playthrough I watched. I was just as confused/frustrated at Shimura's behavior. But deep down inside it started dawning on me, that that's the point of the story. To draw him in a negative light, but then pull the rug out from underneath you and realize that perhaps we could have been wrong. Far from being IN the wrong, as I will insist, but we didn't get out of this war as an innocent martyr. Permanent damage happened.

“It’s one thing to love a character, it’s another to want to be loved by a character” (Rough paraphrase) This is why this game desperately needed an honor system. Could you imagine a different ending to ghost of Tsushima where you maintained your honor, but it came at a cost, vs what happens already as a low honor ending? High honor: you kill Khotun, maintain your honor and relationship with Shimura and become his son, but have alienated Yuna and a few others because the “honorable way” costs lives. Low honor: base game ending. Assassinations, poison, and using ghost weapons reduce honor, open combat without using ghost weapons increases, and such. It’s something I would’ve loved to have see in Ghost of Tsushima, since honor was an important plot piece.

Your comment is exactly what I wanted the game to do, if you had that option. And I think there were many opportunities to put it in the game

This video is very well written with the perfect analysis on Lord Shimura Actions! HE wasn’t a bad man, Yet we all make mistakes in the end! We can even fall to the same mistakes he made, which provides great insight in human Nature! Thanks for the great video! I’m truly grateful that this video was made!

I believe the Shogun was just telling shimura what he wanted to hear and in actuality he was going to have Jen start a clan of Shinobi or something close to it

This why I chose to kill Shimura. Jin was right, he was a slave to honor. The samurai straight and forward way of battle was a easy thing to deal with and exploit, but the ghost is another story. The Khan knew that, they dont win without the ghost. If you spare him he would have committed seppuku for failing the shogun, there is no way around that. So I gave him a warrior's death like he asked.
