True, even crazier is that there's only one weapon set. A simple katana and wakizashi, yet it has way more depth and adaptabilty than all the 100 dual weild mythical weapons in Valhalla. Heck it even feels more brutal than valhalla, which was a big selling point for UBI. It's a clear cut example of how quality is ALWAYS better than quantity.

One of my favorite details when it comes to the story being represented by gameplay itself, is the fact that Jin’s parents guide him in the game. Yuriko mentioned that “your father is the wind at your back, your mother, the birds in the trees”. The wind acts as our in-game guide to missions and stories, while the golden birds guide us to hot springs, bamboo stalks and vanity gear. Essentially, it’s like Jin’s father is guiding him throughout his life as the wind that leads him to important moments in his life and to people in need, while his mother tends to Jin’s needs like resting at a hot spring, practicing with bamboo stalks, and even gifting her son with cosmetics as a golden bird. This little detail adds so much to the lore of the island and Jin as a character. It also represents wholeheartedly the culture of Japan and it’s main religion: Shintoism. In which everything has a spiritual entity and must be treated with respect, which in turn makes Tsushima so mystical yet so real and beautiful. Great video, man.

I never saw sparing Shimura as spitting on the samurais' honor code or a final act of defiance, I just saw Jin refusing to murder a family member he loved and respected.
@JimmyDaKoik3 жыл бұрын
For myself, I killed Shimura because it's what he wanted, and if I hadn't, he would've been dishonored, disgraced and executed by the Shogun anyway.
@Fukushima_Akira3 жыл бұрын
The first time I finished the game sparing Shimura because I thought Jin turning from the Samurai code, denying Shimura's final wish, fit the story more. However, I completed my NG+ with killing Shimura. Throughout the game, Jin still believes himself a Samurai, but willing to bend the code when it's required to save lives. One thing that stuck out to me this time was Ishikawa's words; "Don't let the Ghost consume you", aka don't lose what makes you Samurai. Jin has shown throughout the game that he had honour when fighting those with honour, but when faced against the Mongols, there was no honour to be found. I saw taking Shimura's life as not only Jin's "final" act of being a Samurai, but him completely severing the ties to his old life as a Samurai. Shimura was too set in the old ways, too rigid in the Samurai code. When Jin is escaping, we overhear Lord Oda talking about Shimura's failures mounting up, and that the Shogunate would kill and replace Shimura if he kept failing. Shimura failing to kill the Ghost would cause the Shogunate to kill Shimura anyway. At this point in the story, Jin had moved past the samurai code, but Shimura had not, and never would. Him not dying after that duel would be an unbearable shame for him to suffer for the rest of his days. Jin killing Shimura is about sparing him that agony. Jin always knows what he has to do. Killing Shimura is what he has to do out of love for his stubborn uncle who will never change. The line that it follows choosing the kill option seems to imply that he isn't just killing out of love, but a desire to carry on Shimura's legacy. By honouring his final wish, he shows that he is still Jin Sakai, and not just the Ghost. Jin is his legacy, both in good, but also the bad in helping to create the Ghost, possibly even feeling like he failed Jin and Kazumasa as well. It is a moment where he, instead, declares that he will carry on their teachings in some form, even if he is the Ghost. Shimura expresses gratitude, smiles and asks Jin to "find him in the next life", further reinforcing this point. My thought is the ghost is a mantel Jin took to win a war. It's not who he is. The Shogunate took his land and title, but he is still the same honourable warrior he was at the start. Every good deed he did, every Mongol he put down for his land, held that honour. Killing his uncle showed him and Jin that he is still that man; An honourable warrior who does what is right.
@nikosspyris3 жыл бұрын
@@Fukushima_Akira First of all I disagree with Jin being an a hero, he is an anti hero. Essentially a war criminal who relied on terror and brutality to win, but with the respectable cause of fighting for the liberation of his people from a foreign invader. Jin may have been a good and caring person in his day to day life, but war understandably made him ruthless, merciless and even monstrous. In the DLC per se you will see that his father was similiar to him in many ways, a great warrior who made his enemies fear him and even got himself the title of "The Butcher". Only difference between them is that "The Ghost" is seen as a necessary evil against an overwhelming invading force but "The Butcher" was an unnecessary evil against an already small enemy. So in short, Jin isn't an unambiguously good guy in my eyes, his very human nature is put into question many times throughout the game. But there is still good in him, and by refusing to take the life of a defeated opponent, refusing to kill his one connection to his previous life as a human and not a ghost, refusing to kill the man who raised him, he is proving to himself that the past still matters, family still matters, and that war cannot be allowed to take everything from him. But these are all just secondary thoughts really. My main reason for not killing Shimura is that I think him being alive will make for the most interesting sequel, since I found him to be the best character in the game (maybe below Kenji).
@abc47813 жыл бұрын
@@JimmyDaKoik Well Jin was no longer Samurai officially at that point and had absolutely no reason to uphold the arbitrary Samurai code that the devs decided to put into the game 😅, this entire notion of this Code was birthed during the Edo jidai, not the Kamakura Jidai .

Jin is a character I want to see grow more in more coming games. I hope there’s a GOT 2.
@nicoor.70923 жыл бұрын
I definitely understand the argument for sparing him and completing Jin’s transformation into the Ghost, but I don’t think him killing Shimura is out of character. While it could be seen as him trying to go back to who he was, I believe killing him, from Jin’s perspective, has nothing to do with his honor. Jin still loves Shimura, and while the spare ending obviously reflects that by having Jun refuse to kill his father figure, I think the kill ending reflects that by giving Shimura the death he wanted. Shimura has already been established as someone who will not change in his ways, so I think killing him is an act of love from Jin, allowing Shimura to die in accordance to his code rather than let him live feeling dishonored, and potentially even being executed/committing seppuku later on for that very reason. I think both endings are very in character for Jin, not from a perspective of honor or dishonor, but from a perspective of love for his uncle.

The best thing bout this game imo is all the small details it has, that more often than not, are harder to notice, but feel truly impressive when you do. For instance, when it comes to combat, all the moves either you or the enemies pull are fully realistic when it comes to being blockables, ublockables and unparryables (eg a spear stab doesnt makes sense to be blocked by a katana, but makes sense to be parried, or a shield bash should only be avoided. Similarly, some weaker karana attacks can be just blocked, but if the enemy strikes with more force, you can only parry them). My favourite combat detail though is the way you learn the different stances, by either studying the strongest of the mongols (leaders) as they train (the game doesnt let you observe them unless theyre in a training sequence), or by defeating them in hand to hand combat (so learning their different moves by fighting them and slowly create a fighting style that counters theirs).

Recent AC Valhalla player here: after 120 hours, I can say I “like” the game. Now to my main point, IM HOPING SUCKER PUNCH MAKES A VIKING GAME. War axe or dual axe combat? Bows ? SHIELD WALLS!? DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON NARRATIVE. Would be amazing. I know it’s YEARS down the road if they do but man I feel like they could essentially take anything Ubisoft has done with AC and just make it better. Fun fact. Valhalla and Tsushima came out the same year so it would be funny to see the 2 devs switch and compete in this way.

I completed the base game yesterday. by far my favorite armor was sakai clan armor. Good to soak damage as well as dishes out massive melee damage not to mention you can clear 5 enemies by duelling them. My play style involved more of sword play than stealth, infact i barely used the darts unless its an objective. Yeah so i liked the sakai armor.

This was the spiritual successor or true prequel/sequel to Tenchu that I have always been waiting for. Throughout the whole game I could not stop thinking how it is somehow related to Tenchu. More of a prequel where the honorable samurai were forced to become ruthless stealth assassins and thus the ninja were born. By the end of the game Jin was more like a Ninja than a Samurai. This feels like something that could have been a prequel to the Tenchu games. The combat, the stealth mechanics, the exceptional atmosphere. A near perfect game if there ever was one.

This game reminds me a lot of The Dark Knight (Batman). Like the ending: "1: Why is he running? 2: Because we have to chase him. 1: He didn't do anything wrong. 2: Because he's the hero Tsushima deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. The Ghost." Modified from "The Dark Knight" Also from the movie and you unknowingly said the exact words that Bruce said: Alfred Pennyworth : [while in the underground bat cave] Know your limits, Master Wayne. Bruce Wayne : Batman has no limits. Your words "The Ghost has no limits" Also the irony that he commits "disgraceful" kills with the blade meant for keeping your "Honor". Love this game, by far top favorite ever played.

Just got my ps5 a couple months ago and I was deciding between Ghost of Tsushima or AC:Valhalla. Though, I haven't played Valhalla I am confident that I got the better of the two, I was into AC before it was an RPG and really wanted a Feudal Japan setting for the game. I can't imagine AC team topping this at least with the whole "genetic memory flashback" aesthetic/theme. I was really immersed in the story and the gameplay and it was just so pure. Thank you SuckerPunch!

GOTY 2020! Just riding around Tsushima and taking out Mongols has this therapeutic effect. Plus there’s no micro transactions and filler like AC. Sucker Punch just wanted the players to have and not grind 4 hours to level up for one mission 🤷🏽♂️.

Imo, nothing that's restricted to one system type (PS exclusive) should be eligible for GOTY.
@christopheryanez3 жыл бұрын
@@oliverseager8154 that’s very weird opinion lol, GOTY means GOTY. Not Game of the Year that isn’t a Console Exclusive or Best PC/Xbox/PS game of the year. If a game is praised by a vast amount of players as an incredible work of art and a memorable fun experience whether or not it’s exclusive to a platform...it is very much eligible for GOTY but even at that most GOTY awards are decided by a lot of sorry ass journalists. Ghost of Tsushima won the Player’s Choice Award which is a much more credible award than GOTY considering that the award required actual votes from people as Ghost of Tsushima and other titles battled each other for 3 days to see who would be the Player’s Choice. That game ended up being GoT.
@oliverseager81543 жыл бұрын
@@christopheryanez I understand where you're coming from. But I've always disliked these exclusive titles, I own both systems so I'm not just butthurt about missing out on stuff, I believe that for a game to really win awards it shouldn't be cut off from 65% of the gaming player base. It can't be fairly put into something like that when compared to games that do have a full player base. That also being said, it's definitely deserving of that title, but it shouldn't get it, because its not a game most people can experience.

Doesn't look as polished? What review said that? I'll grant that more linear games look better on a raw graphics level. Correction: Ghost of Tsushima wasn't the fastest selling Playstation exclusive _overall_ But it *was* the fastest selling _original_ Playstation exclusive, as in it was a brand new IP, and not a sequel/remake/reboot etc. TLoU2 still sold more quickly than GoT, selling 4 million copies in 3 days compared to 2.4 million in 3 days for GoT. Nevertheless, those are very impressive sales numbers for a completely original IP, and GoT is (and continues to be thanks to post launch support) an absolute masterpiece

There is one point that people often don’t notice or realize at the end of the game when you decide what to do with lord shimura. The ghosts influence on the people is great, so great that he has an army that he didn’t even know about. If Jin were to kill lord shimura, the jito and ruler of Tsushima, the people supporting the ghost might reject the samurai. The ending isn’t just a battle with Jin’s emotions, it’s also a choice between doing right by his family (honoring lord shimura) and badly influencing his people, or leaving lord shimura devastated but being the correct influence for the people
