My favorite line is “byes to the clouds in the skies that all hold no rain”. To me it’s a metaphor for how empty and vain fame and California is to her, all look and no substance. Such a brilliant image! I love this album so much!

@@Moneyman-33 it’s fact, you know there are stats for this kind of thing right? Despite being critically-acclaimed, Melodrama only had platinum in NZ and Australia. And the singles from Solar Power have already shown that they are not charting (or at least for long) on the Billboard hot 100. Imagine saying an artiste can hide their commercial success when figures are available everywhere. And you never see Lorde sweeping clean at the Grammys the way Bruno Mars or Billie does. Not that any of this matters, obviously, but it’s a fact and not a marketing gimmick. Obviously, she’s a big artiste, but commercially just not on the same level as Taylor Swift, Billie or Ariana. Again, that’s perfectly fine, that’s not her or what she wants, but that’s still a fact

She’s famous. 50% of people know who she is. That’s all that matters. Her selling point is that she’s different from the other pop stars, but she actually isn’t. Don’t get me wrong, she’s very talented, I love her music. But let’s not pretend she’s offering something different from the other singers. They’re all women you would be disappointed to have as a daughter. They’re all the same. Horrible influences on the next generation and that’s precisely what they do, influence.

simply one of the best songs written and produced this year. the drums, guitar, and rythym reminds me of walking on the beach at sunset and dancing alongside the tide. or even just the dead of winter when rays of sunshine enter a window. the feeling of being swept by the sun, literally. this song is much more than just a re-telling of ella's experience with celebrity and fame. "California" can represent anything that one wants to let go of in order to move forward with their lives while enjoying (and possibly forgetting) the memories left behind it all.

This is her best album, the production is great. Lorde's thing has always been being ahead of its time for each album. Melodrama only recently began having mainstream similar sounds in 2022. This is going to come back around in five to ten years and be told it was genius, but there's a delay there.
