STONED AT THE NAIL SALON (LYRICS )
Got a wishbone drying on the windowsill in my kitchen
Just in case I wake up and realise I’ve chosen wrong
I love this life that I have
The vine hanging over the door
And the dog who comes when I call
But I wonder sometimes what I’m missing
My hot blood’s been burning for so many summers now
It’s time to cool it down
Wherever that leads
‘Cause all the beautiful girls, they will fade like the roses
And all the times they will change, it’ll all come around
I don’t know
Maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon
Maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon again
Got a memory of waiting in your bed wearing only my earrings
We’d go dancing all over the land mines under our town
But the sun has to rise
When it does, we’ll divide up the papers
Two former hell-raisers
I’m still crazy for you, babe
My hot blood’s been burning for so many summers now
It’s time to cool it down
Wherever that leads
‘Cause all the music you loved at sixteen, you’ll grow out of
And all the times they will change, it’ll all come around
I don’t know
Maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon
Maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon again
Oh, make it good
Oh, make it good
I’d ride and I’d ride on the carousel round and round forever if I could
But it’s time to cool it down
Whatever that means
Spend all the evenings you can with the people who raised you
Cause all the times they will change, it’ll all come around
I don’t know
Maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon
Maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon again

Pure Heroine: getting the bus home from school, stressed, depressed, and scared because everything’s moving too fast. Melodrama: stumbling home after a confused and wild night out, breathless and exhausted and alive and empty. Solar Power (Stoned at the Nail Salon): going home to your parents’ house after college, unsure of who you are, confronting the people you used to be.

I wouldn't say Pure Heroine is that depressing. There's a lot of wild teenage hope there. It's more like the final days of high school, a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

This song hurts so much. My friend's a huge fan of Lorde, sadly cancer took away his life a month ago. My last message to him before he died was the link to this song. He never replied back. I wish he waited a little bit longer since we both waited for her new album for years.

This song kinda feels like the second part to ribs. In ribs she sings about her fear of the future and growing up/old and in this song is a reflection of that. She’s grown up now, but she’s still scared, even though she’s happy with her life she’s still scared. Scared of living with the choices she’s made, scared she’ll wake up one day and regret it, Scared that it’ll be too late for her to do anything about it. Even though she’s scared she’s starting to accept the fear. No longer putting up the facade of “Nothing could possibly be wrong, because it’s summer and it’s perfect”. She’s finally starting to cool down.

This is the best description I could even think of, it feels she’s ready to accept fear into her life and even in the sound of the instrumental, it feels so calm. Thank you for the amazing words.

I was 18 when PH came out, and I was blasting energy, starting college, falling in love for the first time, scared of growing up but eager for every experience, and buzzcut season, ribs and world alone were my jams. I would listen on repeat and laugh and cry with those songs. I was on my early twenties when melodrama came out. I had broken up with the one who I thought was the love of my life, dropped out of college and was fighting depression with all I had and almost didnt survived. Liability and Hard Feelings described my journey into the dark and the path I had to take to love myself again. As of today, I am 27 yo. I have my own house, I am working retail, I am living with someone I love. I have my cats and pay my bills. I go to my parents house to find comfort. Idk, I feel like she is writing about me, all of her songs describe how I am feeling. Sometimes this is terrifying. But I love her. Thanks, Lorde ♡

"And the dog who comes when I call" The fact that she wrote this in 2018, lost Pearl (her dog) in 2019, and released this in 2021 just hits hard emotionally... It gives those lines extra weight. Also as a person who's got lots of dogs, it felt like a punch and I had to cuddle with my dogs after this song.

the part when Lorde says “Cause all the music you loved at 16 you’ll grow out of” doesn't mean that you will stop liking it, it means that It won't mean the same as it meant when you were younger. I love Pure Heroin, Glory and Gore use to describe my feelings and my life, but not anymore. I still love that song very much, but I think I've grown. This son made me realize that I'm not a teen anymore, I'm 23, I'm growing and I'm reflecting on how life has been until now. The perfect transition to adulthood.

“Spend all the evenings you can with the people who raised you” this line makes me tear up every time. When I was younger, I hated being home and spending time with my parents because I felt like a loser and wanted to be out like all the other kids. But as you get older, you realize family and love matters. You also see your parents get older, and in the back of your mind you know there will be a day when you won’t be able to spend evenings with them anymore. So it’s important to enjoy them while you can. Gorgeous song.

I was 17 when Melodrama came out and it was scared and gorgeous and uncertain and anguished and just what I needed. Now I’m 21 and Solar Power is coming out and so far it’s subtle and cautious and hopeful and contemplative and just what I need. I don’t know if Lorde’s music happens to reflect who I am when I first listen to it, or if my own mood and identity shift to meet hers, but listening to her is always a revelation.

I was in college when pure heroine came out. I was in university when melodrama came out. Now I'm applying for my masters and Lorde is dropping her new album. I just feel connected to her through the ages. Through the times. This song is just enough nostalgic for me to remember all of the previous times I heard Lorde whether in college or in university. Her art is the same. She is the same. We are the same. Just the time has changed. This is my 2021 jam

Lorde remembering her time as a teenager and reflecting on her choices that made her come here, but in the end, she remembers that everything is ephemeral. Women lose their youthful beauty, the seasons change, children leave their parents, and we cannot enjoy the carousel of life forever. Lorde builds a dance between living and growing old in the seasons. Summer represents youth and winter maturity. Or, maybe, these reflections are the result of being stoned in the nail salon.

In this song lorde is exploring how life has gone by and she has taken a delicate stop to see it all As she says incase she has chosen wrong She likes where she is but can't help feeling something is missing And maybe everything didn't happen and she's 'Stoned at the nail salon' She is still crazy for that lover she talks about in melodrama Which is similar to her " I'm my mother's child and I will love you till my breathing stops" She talks about spending all the evenings with her parents in the pandemic and how she was so young once and innocent and now life is going by But then maybe she's just stoned at the nail salon. Again .

I was 14 going on 15 when Pure Heroine released. It perfectly summed up my teenage life. I was 17 when Melodrama released. Getting older and being afraid of the changes, I felt so seen and heard by that album. Now this........dude. The gifts and talent she has for songwriting. Being able to perfectly describe every emotion I've felt, being able to relate to all of this music. It almost brings me to tears. No... It does, because she reminds me of a simpler time, a time I ache and yearn to live in once again. Thank you, Lorde.

@Luis Collado Having the same sound doesn't necessarily mean it was ripped off. Most of the art that we think is "unique" is usually some form of recycled ideas. I mean, any language has a plethora of words that everybody in that language uses repetitively, which in that sense is the same field of recycling the same sonics of music or the same styles of paintings. Who cares about any of that anyway, if we enjoy the "rip off" what else matters ? (I swear I'm not being condescending or petty, I know text can get lost in translation a lot)

W O W ! This song. Hate to sound cliche but, I grew up with Lorde. I’ve done talent shows and put on shows-and made music (still do) since she has. We’re close in age. I was a different self in each of these eras as she created her albums so elegantly... now I’m growing up, emotionally become more stable and aware, lol, fell hard in love, married and have a baby and another one on the way. My music has been placed to the side for so long now... but every so often I like to create and never finish a song, or show my baby a song or two of mine, reminisce to the times I would desperately dream of doing what Lorde is doing. Trying to get my music heard. Being told I had potential but feeling like I was missing something and hopeless! Teenage angst lol. I always wanted to show the world my music, even the “fame” wasn’t what I wanted but just simply to share the pain and experience like other artists do. My music is just a hobby but maybe that’s what it’s meant to be! But my children are my priority and new song lyric inspiration hehe! They fuel my rhythm now! Now days, I drive listening to Melodrama or Pure Heroine on repeat while my baby (and hubby) fall asleep like a log! Always to Lorde! I relate to her honestly just so much and she’s shaped my talent. If I could tell Ella, “thank you” I would. Now that things have changed, I still let the seasons change my mind. 💖 Growing up is a reality hit. A fade into a bitter sweet taste! There’s things that matter more than other things. This song is BLIISSSSSS!! You’ve done it again Lorde. As always. Cheers y’all! I can’t WAIT to see what her new ear waves have to offer.🥂🦚 Can’t wait to play this album on repeat!

This song is beautiful, but I just want to say: You don't HAVE to calm your hot blood. You don't have to treat aging like a sad thing. It's a BEAUTIFUL thing. You don't have to "settle down" in any traditional sense. You're still alive, wiser, and should be living fuller and stronger the older you get, not the opposite. We need to break this way of thinking.

I ruminate on this. But as i got an illness at 16, my blood had only been cooling, it feels. I feel i need to grieve this and settle on the possibility, if not the fact, at least, that high school was probably the peak in my life. And to be okay if nothing in my life tops how i felt back then, with friends everyday. Feeling free exploring school and field trips. At least i lived while i could. And i did it feverently with all i had.
@garimasharma4812
@garimasharma4812 2 жыл бұрын
@AsjleyShautice I suppose cooling down means a couple of things here as Lorde stated in the final chorus. For me it means to let go of anger and not hold grudges as if it's the end of the world. For a teen, it feels like that a lot of times. Lorde had feared the idea of aging but now she seems to be ok with it. So I guess she's trying to say that we should ultimately accept the inevitable if it gives us peace and grow as we age.

Solar Power: "blink three times when you feel it kicking in, that solar power" Stoned at the Nail Salon: "My hot blood's been burning for so many summers now" Liability: "Every perfect summer's eating me alive" Hard Feelings: “It’s time to let go of this endless summer afternoon” Edit: here after the album dropped to add Big Star’s full response to Liability, with “Every perfect summer’s gotta say goodnight” and “Every perfect summer’s gotta take its flight” Lorde is perfect beyond my feeble understanding, but i'm so loving this multi-faceted summer theme

I keep coming back and forth to Clairo's Reaper and Lorde's Stoned At The Nail Salon because of the idea of settling down, growing older and domesticity over all. And there is nothing wrong with growing older, but I find myself still in denial that I once was this kid in the back of the bus looking forward for college, and I once was this guy who once stumbled home drunk after hanging out with friends. And I am glad that I am now home with my family, but I cannot shake a part of me feeling that suddenly the doors are closed on being young and reckless. I remember the line in Ribs "It feels so scary getting old" but now I am a bit older, I don't feel scared, rather I feel miserable.

Again .
