Agreed. This song is very mature… the last verse really resonates me, as a woman who survived an abusive relationship, and I didn’t handle it well. I left him for another man. I couldn’t handle his drug habit. And I’ve never been happier… but now that my ex is sober and has apologized and started paying me back, I realize that I handled it terribly. Maybe I wasn’t strong enough.

As a piece of art, I love this song: for me it makes me realise that we keep repeating traditions passed on to us that we don’t even question if they are right for us. The next thing we commit ourselves to people who have no real aim or goal to sacrifice on their part to make us work. Then you realise, wow, I better be selfish here or I’ll be left in the dust. I must have lied then. I don’t wanna be with someone like you. I definitely don’t want to spend the rest of my life with them.

What a cathartic acknowledgement of the end of a relationship. My divorce just finalized and this song hit me like a truck. There are always the broken promises that prickle your brain from time to time and make you angry that the person you used to love couldn't live up to what they said. But every day, you let that go more and more until you are finally free for good. You'll wake up one day and look in the mirror at a person who has survived deep rejection and pain and embrace that's you. You are stronger and more capable than you gave yourself credit for and you're going to live on and on.

At the end of a relationship you think about the whole relationship, the highs and the lows, and while reminiscing you realize the things you said weren’t lasting. @cpf25663 жыл бұрын
I see the last verse more as a humorous twist subverting the expected trope - which is why it feels happy and sad at the same time. We/the singer expect the subject of the song to be all torn up, disconsolate for her lost love, but she turns it on its head at the end and the melody and feeling of the song changes from downcast regret into optimism and bittersweet relief. And some laughs with hindsight at the cluelessness of the letter writer. Pretty black humour for a love song lol.

2:36 I read the letter in the morning when I first woke up and I did cry. They then turned into tears of joy when I realized those chains holding me back were finally broken and I was free -------------- I’ve been constantly coming back to this song on a daily basis ever since last week. Sometimes you just don’t know the words to explain and validate how you’re feeling until it hits you through a song lyric. The time we had apart really changed me; I grew into the strong and confident person I needed myself to be, and yet, throughout all this time, I was still holding out until the very last moment in case things would change, and we’d pick up where we left off. I soon realized, however, that they’ve spent that time moving on with another person instead. I’ve caused them a world of pain and hurt (and they did their fair share, too), yet I fully and naively believed that time could mend anything and that our love would prevail in the end, just as they had promised me it always would. I wouldn’t like to think that any of us necessarily lied; it was more of a lack of showing up on both ends and being there for the other during moments that mattered most. Now, I’m left with these feelings I’m trying to process instead of just shoving them aside like I usually do. I don’t know if my love will ever abate, or even wilt altogether (maybe love doesn’t ever go away, but eternally freezes until time immemorial). What I do know is that my trust in faith is stronger, and I am meant to move through this life - one heavy step at a time.

2 months ago my ex of almost 2 years left me. Not without reason, and neither of us were solely responsible.... but lord huron was always an artist we listened to. and this song hit like a truck, and im happy it did. We both have our paths in life, and unfortunately they didn't line up.... and i wish her the best in life.... and anyone reading this going through a breakup or what have you, life gets better. It hurts, it sucks, it drags ya down, but everyone can make it through. I hope everyones doing alright, or feels better by this :)

Only 4 times in my life have I listened to a song that gave me goosebumps. That number is now 5 times. The style of Lord Huron is difficult to describe but it certainly is amazing.

Such a darn good song. Fully encapsulates young love for me. Embracing someone else before knowing one's self. Offering false promises and whispering sweet nothings, emulating love stories we've absorbed from movies, television, books, music, (and for the lucky few) parents. Love is so many things. Always hard and often times unsuccessful. This is the quintessential break-up song. Well done Allison, Ben, Mark, Miguel, and Tom. BRAVO!!

@@swingersonian the fifth guy that you perhaps may be referring to is Brandon Walters (backup vocals and guitarist). He's not a permanent band member but rather just a touring member. Same goes for Misty Boyce (keyboardist and backup vocals).

that sounds like surface stuff, superficial... What matters is the subconscious dreams and the real person in there. If they can't love that, they never loved you. Most relationships that exist are all in a false pretense or societal expectation.

LYRICS: I swore that I'd become a better man for you and I tried I tried to change my ways and walk the line you follow I bore a flame that burned a thousand suns for you but it died I told you I could never love somebody else but I lied Mmm, I lied Mmm, I lied I told you I'd be coming back again for you but I'm not I'm going way out where the world will never find me I made a claim that I would dance until we're bones with my bride I told you I would never leave you all alone but I lied I read your letter in the morning by the lake and I cried They were tears of joy, my chains are finally broken I made a vow to stand beside you 'til the day that I die Told you I could never live without your love but I lied Mmm, I lied Mmm, I lied Mmm, I lied Mmm, I lied Mmm, I lied Mmm, I lied

I kept wondering why I connected with this song even though Ive never broken up with someone. Still love and together with my husband. But I realized why now, its how I feel about my parents. I tried my hardest to please them and told them that I would never leave them, that I would take care of them till they died. But I lied. I realized late as an adult that I wasn't happy. I wasn't being true to myself. I finally rebelled against them at 35. They couldn't accept the real me. We just hurt and fought each other. So I moved far away from them. I still sometimes think about me, as a little child promising never to leave them. And the fact that I lied and it makes me feel sad sometimes. Sad it has to be this way, but I needed to be happy too.

NGL, I would love a cowboy like Ben! 😍I was always a sucker for the old westerns 50s -70s I grew up watching, and the romantic ideal of it all. It's sad that the love for it has sort of died off, so I feel really lucky to have discovered Lord Huron; recapturing the nostalgic dream of wide open skies, freedom, red dust, and riding your horse wherever the wind blows you.
