haven't had the chance to play, but from reading the patch notes I was pretty excited to hop back in the game. I really like this is the first time they attempted to make major changes to characters since perhaps release (even if characters like Sol has received major changes throughout the entire game's lifespan)

The major thing for me is where arcsys said something along the lines of, "we increased defense multiplier to add more interactions". Then, the changes to combo structures for alot of characters feels like they went n did the exact opposite. And a lot of the patch feels like it was not play tested at all. I do like the direction taken on most of the chars tho

Tbf after a bit of dooming, I've really started to enjoy this patch. I feel like even though my main didn't get enough to bring him to a healthy spot (Zato btw), he still feels way more fun than how he felt in season 3. And everything feels more fun and fair, apart from some outliers. Honestly, if they tweak the right things, and tone down some of the more egregious stuff, I feel like this could be the best season of strive. Rip pot and axl tho, my mans got an unjust treatment

Honestly, I feel like your take on this is exactly what they were aiming for, for the most part? Nowhere in the patch summary does it say they're trying to shake up the meta, it's just about making sure _all_ characters conform to their vision regardless of power level. So if Zato feels more fun than in S3, that's great 😁 I agree, I think if this momentum holds 2025 will be a bright year for Strive. Here's hoping 🙏

Yeah damage increases they gave some are wild. The absolute most hp anyone in the game got on the defence buff is 40. With most of the cast getting less than 20 and some even as low as 0 (HC). And yet some skills got damage buffs of 40 or more. That can be landed multiple times a round.

I think there’s a lot of really interesting ideas in this patch. In theory, lots of characters are being taken in more dynamic directions. That said, the anger is definitely because Arcsys has tried and failed so many times to make Ram, Nago, GL etc not disgusting. This time they just strictly made them better/more frustrating. On top of significantly weakening and removing the most fun/saucy options from lower tier characters, it’s just insulting. No more Potemkin kara, no rainwater loops, Gio is back to getting 3 to 5 hit combos off most buttons. I think people want to feel like Arcsys understands and cares about their character just as much as the others, and this patch made it very clear that they don’t.

This is kinda how I feel tbh. I mained Ram since launch, but I've always missed Xrd Ram and current Ram just felt... not as fun to me, but at least still enjoyable. However her gameplan was just a bit too linear and easy so I was hoping they'd do some changes to make her a bit less linear and problematic. ...Somehow, she feels even stronger yet MORE linear and somehow clunky at the same time. I think she's stronger now (def didn't need to be), but far less fun. I no longer think they know what they're doing with her and, frankly, don't think they knew from day 1. Thankfully, as someone who mained Ram/Dizzy in the past, Dizzy came out in the same patch Ram become unfun to me, so I still have something fun to play :D

I imagine this video was made before ArcSys acknowledged the known bugs and plans they have to fix them. The question of "how could they miss all of this and release a buggy game?" It's the challenge of being a game developer. Sometimes you know of bugs, but don't have the bandwidth to fix them before a scheduled release date like Halloween. Reporting bugs and constructive criticism like this video is great, and being angry and the patch is understandable... but a lot of the dialog around the patch has not been great

I gotta agree, there's clearly broken stuff and silly stuff and ramlethal valentine, but all in all this patch just plays a lot better most of the time. The gameplay is more interesting and varied, with characters trying to land their optimal starters or trying to put you in a situation their character excels at. Far less conversions from fullscreen into 70% meterless off a random far slash or whatever.

I think that the problems were stats and details. The aim of this patch is great, and fit what I want, like increasing interactions, increasing health, not sure about the 6Pchange. Character identity optimization. These concepts are super good and you can see the effort in some specific characters, like baiken. But they messed it up on stats. They did add health in general, but they also increase damage to certain moves to ensure that the damage is still huge in specific situations. But most characters only get 30 hp buff, while the damage buff is way much higher on those buffed moves and characters. Sometimes you just need to change your combo route and you get more damage. And it won't be that hard in most of cases which makes everyone become slayer level beast. About details, things like ram's sword not getting interrupted is the result of not caring about details. It feels like they don't have enough tests on these characters.

The rainwater nerf was brutal. It made Axl's offense, combo variety and reward much worse. The few buffs he got were simply not enough to compensate for lost strenght and lost sauce.

@@alainchristienemendoza9982Tbh there's not much of a change with the rensen changes, especially aince axl had 6k>rensen in earlier seasons. But it's a pretty inconsistent combo and that is just axl's problem, he's very inconsistent and shifting power to his pokes just continues that. Especially now since loops got hit with juggle nerf, even with the buffs he'd probably be net neutral at best.

The only problem I have is they promised more communication and updates in Season 3, then we were left with it for about, if not over, a year. Might have been them deciding to make a switch port that held up their resources, but I really hope they're planning on actually keeping up with patches and updates this Season.

Yeah just remove that for the game, that's cringe, nobody wants to air grab kapel or jump rainwater LOL" Absolute Zero thoughts put into that, while they are doing actual good changes to others char (like Ino, aba, may, chaos, bed, elph, faust, gio). At first there was hype with expectations of reshuffled meta, my main (Millia) finally getting something reliable Then there was confusion followed by anger as Millia got nerfed, where as top tiers got either net buffed or reworked without moving their power level. This is even heated by the fact that Walter dropped Millia. Now it's just bitterness that's left. Im still playing this game just because i don't have other options but i can't say im having a good time. My kit can be shut down completely by 30% of the roster, but even if i play my cards perfectly and set up my "mix" i get reversaled or fuzzied because oh god, oh god, Millia doesn't have mix. Also, she dies faster now which is just peak comedy considering devs plans of "keeping the damage but encreasing the number of interactions.

I think it's a bad idea to have so many reworks 3 and 1/2 years into the game. Most people don't play strive consistently anymore unless they are competitive, they come back to it for DLC or after watching a big tourney or when the mood strikes. Now many people don't have their characters to come back to, and likely won't lean another, while competitive players who loved their characters so much they played them for 3 and 1/2 years suddenly have them gone as well. Pot had the technical skill of the character removed which is just terrible. It's just a bad idea. Adding new stuff would have been fine, but massive reworks changing the characters that players have fallen in love with for years is not a good idea and may end up killing the game.

It's good that GL is being incentivized to think about what he wants to do with Security, since actually building the resource takes 0 decision at all, and before the changes it was used pretty much exclusively for drone. The damage is very dumb though.

I just started playing again after a very long break, so I don't have a great reference point... but... They said one of their goals was to increase the number of interactions per round. This was clearly a fail. I'm still getting two touched by half the cast, and some characters do even more damage now. You can't keep "the satisfying high damage the game is known for" and have a high number of interactions per round. It feels like every hit is a counter hit that leads to like 70% damage. Some games (not rounds) last like 20-30 seconds total. The lobbies are still omega trash and the absolute worst part of the game. Whenever I quit, this is the reason why. I know this is just the game... but holy crap blocking and taking your turn back is insanely difficult here. I can get a double perfect against someone and then get double perfected by them. It feels so random when you have two players of similar skill; like the first person to make their opponent block is probably going to win. There are a bunch of defense tools, but they're crazy risky. Some combos feel like there's a burst bait every two hits; it can get pretty obnoxious when burst is such a scarce resource. I'm not saying I want them to fundamentally change all the insane mix in the game, but adding frame data to training mode and some decent matchmaking would go a long way for reducing player frustration.

I got used to the UI, the high damage... still not a fan (I think your suggestion of two tap to three is the best way to go), and the lobbies? Still absolute trash 4 years later. It's crazy that everything people were complaining about in beta are still annoying today. I'm all for letting the devs cook, but when the meal's been spoiled for 4 years, let's try something else please.

My personal biggest issue with this patch is that their claim about increasing the number of interactions only really applies to some characters? Like, they have NOT at all fixed the fact that characters like Sol and Nago and Johnny and Slayer just shatter over half the roster in 1-2 touches, it’s only really effected characters who already struggled to do that. There are some characters who SHOULD do big numbers: ABA has a whole install for it, for example. But cases like Johnny really don’t need to keep doing numbers like that

A friend of mine just started playing strive with me and others on weekends a couple weeks ago, and he loves the goldlewis changes. He doesn’t even do the coffin swing moves he just loves how the mini gun got buffed lol. Also we kept seeing glitches where if he wins a match with a mini gun wall break the camera goes nuts kinda like that other glitch you were showing earlier.

I think what bothered me most about this patch (even when I scrolled through the patch notes before the actual patch came out) is how much effort/work they put into some characters compared to others. Characters that already pretty much worked/were even too strong got soooo many changes that ended up basically keeping their power-level in check, whilst others just got.. fuck all, or were even nerfed (Testie, Millia, Axl.. Anji?). It really did feel weird reading through Sol, Ky and Potemkin early on in the notes just to see like 3 changes for Testament or Millia in what seems like hindsight. Did they run out of time? The defence changes sounded so good on paper but they're only really felt on characters that already dealt low damage. We've had this discussion with Slayer, about how sometimes, A LOT OF DAMAGE really is worth having mediocre neutral. So why did the power characters get damage buffs as compensation? It's well and good they're trying to give us reasons to pick Chipp over Millia or vice-versa by differentiating further, but the real question still is.. why shouldn't I pick Leo? Or Goldie? Why go for a hellish mix-up you'll have to land 5 times if Goldie has to get you to guess wrong twice. Why play Jack-O when you could do the minimum in learning about your resource with Nago, where even the so-called "failure state" for some fucking reason gives you buffs for a comeback? Nago needs to have a comeback mechanic?! Where's Jack-O's damage buffs when she's spent servant-gauge? Why is the explosion still just a meme?! Maybe it's on me for having held out hope this kind of mindset in GG:S would change after 3 years, I guess. But the way they've handled this patch just really tore any hope I had in Strive being the game I wanted it to be away from me. That's fine, I guess. If people have fun like this then I'm not really trying to spoil it for them. I'll just keep it at casual play with friends and don't even think about re-doing celestial the next few months.

Honestly, I'm a pretty casual player, and I get that being hit with some bug in ranked is probably frustrating, but at the same time it's not like they're *not* going to address it at some point, so I'm not sweating it.

I haven't played a ton but heres my biggest impression so far, and a couple personal gripes. Starting with my characters so I can be judged accordingly - Zato, Leo, Happy Chaos, Testament, and ABA. I would say low to medium floor 10 player on all of them So I really want to hear others opinions on this and if they are feeling this change like I am. One of the biggest changes I've felt is with the defense changes. Characters like Potemkin or Bedman feel crazy tanky, like I need 4-5 combos to kill tanky, which I feel like I'm fine with them taking more hits, but Pot feels dang near unkillable. Meanwhile the squishy characters feel like they die in a tap. My most recent character is Happy chaos, and it feels like one combo and a couple strays kills him, let alone a pot buster takes 70% of his health. So the whole health difference feels crazy. Now I like overall more health in general it feels better not getting instantly done in, but it feels like the squishiers tend to die just as easy if not easier now while the tanks have become unstoppable. Now onto personal gripes. Testament feels like she needed so much more, he has always been fairly mediocre, and it would've been nice if she got something a little more. Yes it is nice that he gets the stained grab, but because stain goes away even on block its a very niche buff, I am happy with it, but it doesn't feel all that impactful. ABA is someone that I have a larger problem with. I know they want to tie into identities of characters more, but my greatest hope for ABA and the reason I have mostly stopped playing her is the gap is too large, and I hoped they would decrease the gap. ABA has some of the most binary win/lose rates against characters. Zoners obliterate her, and she obliterates non-zoners, it feels like the match doesn't matter you know how it ends when you meet an Axl as ABA. So what did they do? They made the gap worse. Now ABA will be crushed further by zoners and will still absolutely demolish poor poor chip. Oh yeah another thought I had. I can't tell if its a skill dif or not, but going into someone that knows how to 6P still feels the exact same as before, even with stalling in the air, most stalls still give enough time for a second 6P. the one thing I dislike about this patch is how they changed Sin. I don't even play Sin, but making his bar be a more scarce resource without in the same process buffing his food eating special to actually buff his meter gain is INSANE. ASW straight out forgot Sin has that move

My issue is with the principle that they have a move that historically gave him his resource back, and after making said resource more limited they didn't make eating speed up its recovery. I personally consider the aspect of Sin needing to eat on Xrd to be the most interesting part of his design history on GG, I'd rather not have him turn into an all or nothing kind of character

If anything, Sin feels like he's on steroids right now, and this is coming from me who's a Sin player. His follow up attacks on his specials are much more powerful and you can even convert combos off them now. However, I do agree that they should have made eat speed up the recovery of his stamina, seeing as that aspect got nerfed pretty hard. I feel like it makes him a little more strategic and interesting to play now though, so overall, I'm not complaining about the changes.

Honestly I’m not really upset with the fact that clone can’t take a hit. I’m more upset with the fact it still takes health to use. It’s not like it’s a parry, the main way I normally use it is a a projectile wall. It’s not really with using now, it really just became a glorified back dash.

I literally asked this yesterday on reddit lol. I don't play this game since Elphelt came out and i returned basically because of Ram as she was my main (well, one of them) and i ended up not liking her actually, but liking A.B.A and Testament. This patch is where i'm having the most fun, besides getting really pissed in some matchups but hey, this is Guilty Gear after all, and i genuinely didn't get why people where mad. Now i kinda of understand why but i'm still enjoying anyway

Ram feels so different now. She doesn’t even feel like the same character. It’s one thing to change a character like this between games, but to completely retool someone during the games lifespan feels wrong.

I thought rams original Strive design was wack and didn't feel like it utilized her kit to the fullest. Instead the strengths of a few moves in her kit(mostly sword toss in the corner) outweighed everything about the character. For 3 seasons, they attempted to give more power and agency to her other tools, but in the end, sword toss in the corner remained the primary character identity. It feels like the devs saw the same flaws I did and instead of trying to salvage it again, they opted for something better. So the second I saw how they changed her, I personally thought this was the best thing to happen to Ram since launch. I get she doesn't feel the same anymore. But to me, she's a much more interesting character because of it.

I think the weirdest part of the patch for me is that there are quite a few characters that got next to (or less than) nothing, which is weird when the characters who got the most new tools are the best in the game. You mentioned how Ram was better Testament, but the solution to that being a rework (and buff) of Ram is really strange. Millia, Jack-O, Johnny, and Zato all got shockingly harsh patches for being on the lower half of the cast, and Axl and Potemkin both got reworks that simplify their (already considered simple) gameplans even further. A wacky patch is fine, but when you pick and choose who gets new stuff that creates problems, even moreso when the characters you pick are near exclusively top tiers. I get judging a patch on balance in the first week is risky, but in sheer quantity of changes, reworking and buffing top tiers while leaving the low tiers alone (or even nerfing them ;_;) is just weird no matter how the game turns out.

I think the Ram change makes sense. Her original design was that her swords were supposed to be a resource, that heavily rewarded her on use, but without them she had a much harder time. Kind of like Zato, in that sense. However in execution, her swords were almost constantly in play. Part of this was how fast they returned to her + being able to be picked up with proximity. The other issue was that there was almost no reason to use her swords outside of the corner. So in every instance where swords were useful, was in a place you could instantly pick them up again. And this is just a theory, but I believe a lot of other changes to her kit, were an attempt to give her an identity outside of the sword toss. But it was so strong and simple, it overshadowed everything. So the changes themselves solved this issue by 1. Making her sword use actually more limited/punishing. 2. Making one of her swords rewarding in the mid-screen, which incentivizes players to risk the cooldown for big damage. And the reason they reverted a lot of her moves to older states(like Sildo Detruo being an overhead), is because they are now following through on their original concept, so her original kit works better in tandem with it again. I think it's a little flawed to look at the patch as "weak vs strong" cause it seems clear that was not how the devs approached it. Instead they were looking at characters execution in design. Some characters have had a weak design execution since day 1(like Ram). Whereas other characters like Zato or Axl basically hit all the important parts of the character design from the start. I get as players it's easy to look at a characters strength as what's important but for designers, sometimes that has very little to do with it.

Nothing of what they wanted to happen in the descriptions of the patch notes plays in strive. It feels a lot less fun most of the times. I mean, the One 2D nerf on Jacko crushed so much of what made Jacko fun, now I am pushed to play her in a way that makes people despise playing against jacko (infinites).

As an ABA main, I'm alright with yhe 236K nerf in normal mode, but losing the advancing block has made zoner matchups so much more agonizing, ESPECIALLY against Dizzy, you really have to play patient and build meter with the command block to do anything.

1.4 fix patch does not have dizzy roosted nut listed as bug. the skill doesn't fells like it was suppose to be available like that, the frame is very tight even trying anti air force opponent to standup first. do that type of skill meant to be stay on the game, any chance they gone fix it or maybe change it.

Yes I like the patch. But I hope Arcsys does something for the characters with the more questionable nerfs or lack of buffs. I had higher hopes for Zato, I'd like him to be not a total throw pick competitively. Overall, solidly positive impression, held back by the uncertainty of Arcsys' spotty track record in the past and present. edit: Also, my enjoyment is held down by the very loud complaining.

Like theoryfighter put it best on twitter: perhaps completely overhauling characters 4 years after the game's launch wasn't the smartest move. I'm also kinda disheartened that they seem to only nerf the hardest characters in the game. The best Zato can get, it seems, is them walking back on their own changes from past seasons, so the character isn't really buffed, and HC has been nerfed twice already while being the hardest character in the game. Makes you wonder what's the point of putting in the time to learn a harder character for them to frequently gut it. At the same time, May, Sol, Nago and Leo seem to never be nerfed and either keep their place and strength or get stronger.

hey, huge gear fan here (ino, bridget, elph) and i love it. this patch got me back into strive honestly. i think the game direction and philosophy that the devs outlined in the patch notes is amazing and ive had so much fun playing strive that i haven't had in the past. really love how they're trying to increase interactions and vary character identities more :)

ArcSys noticed Axl players were having too much fun with a character that was functional and unique from the rest of the cast and from typical zoners, good thing they fixed that. I doubt we'll ever get Rainwater vacuum back (they were pretty clear on wanting to change the move's purpose) but I seriously hope they take a closer look at why we weren't just throwing Rensen all the time like they seem to want, and adjust these "consolation buffs" to actually *work* and more satisfactorily make up for the loss in combos, pressure, and neutral that we lost. 6K > Rensen doesn't even work most of the time still (despite that being a SPECIFIC combo they wanted to be able to happen) and the Nado launch is so pitiful I genuinely thought it was another bug when I first saw it. Without Rainwater the rest of his kit has kinda just fallen apart and I really really hope they address how non-functional he's become as a result.

I think the one blindspot players have, is they are very bad at parsing changes within context of the games history and ecosystem. Zato's Damned Fang is a good example. Yes, they did revert it back to it's original use. But in context of the characters history, the reason they changed it in the first place, was an attempt to solve a problem in regards to his strength early in the games lifespan. Clearly they solved that problem on their end, so reverting Damned Fang, was the response to that. He still got problems. But clearly my ideal version of the character IS not the same as the dev teams. But what I can do is follow along and try to see what their visions is... or stop playing the character. It's easy, lol.

The Pot changes made me really sad. It made him fresh and unique compared to previous iterations of the character. He definitely feels stronger but he has less of a skill ceiling to explore and have fun with.

I'll just preface this, by saying, I'm a pretty avid strive hater, but I figured I'd check the patch out, as an xrd ram player. I know people are mostly focused on the sword explosion stuff, but being able to cancel/hit-confirm into 214hs is hilarious. I'm just playing sword footsies, and rarely actually chucking them. Even that aside, pretty funny how they increased hp and stuff, but I can do k-6hs-214hs off like anything for 40-ish %, not including stuff like counter hit, or using bar. I know most characters can do this, or more off of like anything, but I feel it goes against what they were trying to do with this patch lol. My favorite xrd ram thing, was simply the 2s,2hs combos/string, cause I like seeing big sword, do big damage, so I'm actually enjoying myself for once in this game. Counterhit HS, or counterhit 214hs, into ending your character's life is kind of a blast. So funny how that works, the patch where everyone is freaking out, is the one I'm actually having fun in. Edit, but I forgot to include hitconfirming hs into calvados, and deleting someone. Does like 50-60%, and is likely to break the wall. I wouldn't be surprised if they lowered the damage on it a bit.

They turned Anji most of the way back to season 1 status. Patch note reasoning: "Anji is a character who launches his offense while taking on risk. However, there were many instances where the reward far outweighed the risk. We've added new offensive options for him and made it easier to extend his offense." What they did: Added a gimmick that will kill you if you try to do it in blockstrings. Not a single other thing positively affecting offense. Lowered reward from risky followup, made the safe followup punishable often. Still kept the problem where Anji gets exactly one mixup per string without spending meter. Well, with his changed 2P, 6H and fish he can't be nearly as bad as S1. The largest buff Anji ever got was -1 frame on 2P startup and that's not even a joke. Massive difference on a character with no meterless reversal.

well fish is pretty good and made spin not so out of anji’s favour and he still gets the increased reward off of fujiin low and his damage is relatively even higher this patch when he does land a big hit so it’s not all bad (but certainly not a buff). It’s very odd that characters like millia and anji were nerfed in the same patch that goldlewis and chipp were buffed

not to detract from your larger point but making 2p one frame faster is huge. a 4 frame 2p vs a 5 frame 2p completely changes what a character has access to on defense, lets them interrupt and punish things that were impossible before

He needs it dude *Edit: Oh also he is relatively unchanged, I've been using the same stuff just for 2 bars of stam instead of 1. And the F.S and 2S nerfs are barely noticeable tbh. Overall I'm stoked to see what's in store for the future, my love for this game isn't any less. My heart goes out to the Leo players, though.

People complain about potemkin too. But honestly I tried him a bit. And past Kara. It's all buffs. So I'd say if they want people to stop complaining but still keep their vision. Bring Kara's back. But nail pot buster specifically to the ground. The range and armor make up for the lack of Kara buster. Since it's pretty much required to do a Kara buster, being the whole reason behind it's removal. Canceling all momentum at the start of the move should prevent people from using Kara. While keeping the tech on every other special. As thoses are unnecessary. No new player will be stumped about not being able to do a backward Kara mega fist.
