Based on a real history back in Tang Dynasty that a famous Chinese monk Master Xuan Zang ( 602-664A.D.) travelled to India and brought back scriptures and spread the buddhism in China. This real Chinese story is also well known by Japanese as during the ancient time Chinese culture was widely spread in Japan and that’s why you can see so much similarities between these two countries. And the Japanese just borrowed that story for their anime, that’s it. 😢
