Lorewatch: Bastion - Overwatch Lore & Speculation

Bastion has roots that run deep in the world of Overwatch. The last of its kind, Bastion embodies the horrors of the Omnic Crisis to many around the world and with good reason. Thousands upon thousands of fellow Bastion units made up the bulk of the Omnic forces and they became the face of the enemy in the minds of many.
The Bastion we know today was present at the Battle of Eichenwalde early in the conflict, but unlike its fellows somehow it survived. Lying dormant in the Black Forest for decades the world moved on as the vegetation grew around it. It wasn't until a small and inquisitive bird began to build a nest on its shoulder that it was roused from its long slumber - but something had changed.
The combat programming was still present, but now it ran alongside a fascination with the world around it, and Bastion found nature to be a thing of wonder. It still carries trauma from the war however, and now roams the world to better understand itself, all the while careful to avoid human contact. With Ganymede at its side could this lone unit provide hope for true peace between humans and Omnics in the years to come?

I believe that Bastion is proof of the teachings of the Shambala. The main teaching they spread was the idea that Omnics had souls and were not just AI. This has been a major underlying question in the lore as some believe that Omnics are just killing machines and that AI that can adapt is simply mimicking a soul. this could be said for the more advanced Omnics such as zenyatta, but a bastion unit that did not have this adapting ai and that was built purely as a fighting machine, turning against his programming and choosing a peaceful path shows that Omnics do in fact possess free will and are not just AI.

I would like to see some clever Zenyatta-Bastion dialogues that mimic C3P0 and R2D2 in Starwars. For example: Bastion: *emits pleasurable chirping noise on Eichenvalde Zenyatta: Yes, the trees ARE rather lovely this time of year. Bastion: *a few short chirps of agreement Zenyatta: Have you ever considered doing art? You certainly have the Scanner for it. Bastion: *emits a slightly abashed, yet pleased chirp.

TheWooly Sammoth A war machine with a basic AI system that goes against its programing would be the proof for the Shambala that Omnics do infact have souls. Zenyatta is an omnic with more advance AI which him more flexibility in their actions, better inteligence in general, and free will. Meanwhile bastion only has a basic AI system at most and shouldnt retain any individuality but a bastion breaks all logic and we get a clunky robot finding its way through a new world.

Woo! I've been waiting for this one. I knew most of it tbh, but it's always nice to hear it in your smooth, silky voice. Question though! What would you think would happen if Zenyatta (somehow) found Bastion? Would he strive to assist him, as he had Genji before him, or would he shun the combat omnic, as he was a symbol of the conflict that nearly tore apart the world? Would you like to see this meet-up at all?

I'd like to see it for sure, and I think Zen would be very helpful to Bastion. After all the Shambali fundamentally believe all are equal, Omnic and human alike, so would relish the chance to bring Bastion peace much as he did with Genji - and with those PTSD like symptoms, Bastion could certainly use the help.

Isn’t ironic, that bastions an omnic? It’s original purpose was to be a peace keeper, but was eventually used as a solider for war. Once though it had awoken from its long slumber, because of constant war and guarding duties, it never once had a chance to enjoy what the world was. As it travels through the woods, it starts to see more of the world, and how beautiful it is. It behaviour is almost completely opposite to what it’s supposed to be.

Such a good Lorewatch. There is something about the almost PTSD nature of how Bastion reacts to the woodpecker and the memories of the old unit that are fascinating. Though I have a question for you for future possibilities, a pair in fact. How do you think Reinhardt would react to the last Bastion, and do you think, if a second war breaks out across the world, do you think the last Bastion would join Overwatch after Winston reactivates it.

The PTSD and the fascination with nature I think are the most telling parts of The Last Bastion. From what we know the Bastion units weren't overly sentient, enough to do their jobs as peacekeepers but not much more, certainly not at the same level as Zenyatta and his brethren. So what's changed during his long sleep in the forest? Could be core to the story moving forwards at some point. As to Reinhardt, well I suspect better than most. Granted he's a veteran, but he doesn't appear to hate Omnics in the manner others do, at least not as far as we've seen. And to Bastion picking sides... put it this way, I don't see him being a bad guy, but whether he fights for good or indeed fights at all is another matter.

From what we can tell no, that seems to have just been a way of moving people to the next clue by finding the Bastion triggered morse code on Dorado. It doesn't seem to have actually been a canon part of her attack on LumeriCo. Could be wrong, but this is going by the info and discussions we've got :)

bastion could have deactivated himself due to repair purposes but couldnt finish before the battle was called off. thus he just slept, with no orders to re awake it could have been scavengers that indirectly woke him they could have been scavenging an omnic outpost or command unit and accidentally sent a signal out. considering all the broken units around there they were probably left as a heritage site.

That's very possible. He had clearly seen combat as the sound of the woodpecker affected him markedly, but he seemed shocked - if that's the right word - by the actual battle of Eichenwalde. It's an odd one. We know he was there, but for how long before his deactivation?

for the surprise this may have genuinely been the first time he saw crusaders, which would be surprising in itself his line of bots where stamped out pretty quickly so sending in grunts as fodder to scout dangerous areas? i can see early intelligence ai doing that as it would not have grasped the concept of life yet he probably got ambushed while doing recon on one of his first assignments. theres no reason to assume the ai cores cant be taken out so if he was an elite of any kind wouldnt they put him in a less mass produced model?

+Arxel his E54 skin? That's a standard issue skim given to all units within the created group. Eichenwalde for example has lots of Bastions from the same betallions scattered about. I thoroughly enjoyed this Lorewatch. Before the Omnica backstory was released back in August I spent a lot of time writing a comprehensive background of the Omnic Crisis. That work will probably be repurposed into an original piece one day, but I think that among all the parts of Overwatch history the Omnic Crisis is still an event that we know surprisingly little about given its importance to the universe. Do you ever think we'll get even a hint as to what caused the Omniums to rebel? Or why the Omnicd turned hostile in the first place? I've always believed the secret lies in their AI, but the conspiracy theory could suggest that some kind of data corruption is at play as well.

I'm hopeful that First Strike will give us a lot more insight into those early days of Overwatch and the Omnic Crisis, including - hopefully - the Omniums and possibly why they went rogue. Have to remember though that as far as we're aware from Olympia Shaw blogs the in universe characters are still unsure as to what caused them to rebel.

That's a nice thought, depending on how Reinhardt views Eichenwalde and Balderich after all this time. He must have known about the ruins for all these long years and yet seems to have been quite content to leave it as a silent shrine to his former master. Maybe we'll find out one day what he really feels :)

I think that bastion is a wild card for now, but instinct says that he'll join overwatch out of love for nature/perseveration of nature and life. Winston will probably welcome it with open arms and then become it's friend. but, that's what I'm thinking.

I believe that Bastion is just like any other PTSD stricken War Veteran, alone in the world and in desperate need of help of the right kind. If he ends up with Overwatch they can help him with his issues that keep him from living his life the way he wants to but it'll be a tough road for him and if someone else gets to him first then I fear for the horrors he'll be forced to commit.

+Gabriel Zamora We don't precisely know to be honest but the reason Overwatch was so successful was their ability to fight behind enemy lines, presumably directly at the Omniums themselves. Without them the Omnics lose their over riding drove for conquest. The first strike graphic novel should give is more of an insight, which is expected to drop very soon. Thanks - Dantier

So we already know that the Summer Seasonal event is the Summer Games and the Fall event is Halloween, and I think its safe to assume the Winter event will be Chrismas, but what about Spring? An Easter themed event seems likely, but I think it would be hilarious to see a Spring Break themed event. Since the Summer Games focuses on sports, the Spring event could be more beach and vacation themed. Imagine Soldier: 76 in swim trunks and flip flops, or Junkrat lobbing explosive coconuts. What do you guys think! :D

Low Mana Gaming I would love to see Santa Claus Road Hog with a candy cane and licorice hook and Elf Junk Rat with jingle bell bombs. I would also like to see Rudolph Tracer, Ms. Claus Mei, and maybe a Navidad Sombra skin that's green, red and white to represent both Christmas and her Mexican heritage. perhaps other characters could also have costumes that represent other holidays this time of year.
