I had no isea that there were so many various styles and tones from one instrument in the hands of an artist like Lori. Each part of the world has a different style and the differences are beautiful. Lori as well.

I was in seventh grade, around 2007, when I first saw this at the behest of my brother who was learning the violin at the time. Music like this brings back memories of a time when I was more innocent and more optimistic of things in my life.

Absolutely beautiful! I don't think you can compare the classical violin to the fiddle and claim one style is superior to the other. When played by an individual, this music has great emotional value, on a par with a full orchestra. It just depends on how you want to listen to it.

@sixyearcycle Generally, when people log onto these clips, ignore the music and attack every little thing they can about position and posture, it's jealousy. Either they know they're not as good and it rankles them or they took lessons for years and get mad when somebody self-taught playing in a way they were told is wrong plays as good as they do or blows them away. Then there's the age thing too. People get jealous when a kid at 6 or 7 is already better than they are or will ever be.

Thank you, Lori Watson! This video got me interested in Scottish music way back in 2007 or so. I have been studying and playing it ever since, and it is music that resonates deeply within me. I have discovered many wonderful players, and richness and depth of feeling in the tradition. Very few of the study pieces for viola, my instrument, make me want to pick it up and play like this one still does. Your performance of Tam's Old March still draws me in, and has a distinctive style. This video is one of the gems of KZbin. I have to mention you have many lovely CD's out, too, at loriwatson.net!

I never knew that fiddle was done differently than classical music, all the time I have been playing I have been being told that you can never lean down while you are playing, but I guess I have been playing classical this whole time so that is probably why! Good thing I lost my fiddle books (but found them again today) otherwise I would've been playing wrong for months!

@jjwierd you don't need sheet music!listen to it listen to it again then find the notes on your instrument.this would be a great slow tune to develop your ear with.also you pick up part of the stylistic approach of her playing violinists mainly play from dots fiddlers from ear.to play this kind of music you must trust your ear over everything else.that is not to say there aren't allot of good collections of tunes written down but you must be able to play from how it sounded good luck

@Kirke182 me and my gran who has played for 80 odd years had this very conversation last week when she noted my hand and fiddle position. Being completely self taught I do not use anything other than the first position and I can hold the fiddle In some odd positions at times but it really doesnt matter. there is no right or wrong in my opinion, just good sound or horrid sound! And yes I squeak at times!

To play like that, so long as I still had hands and a fiddle after, I just wouldn't mind where my hands went - like, whatever it takes ?! Absolutely beauitiful. So who's complaining ?!? "There's nowt as strange as folk."

I think you have to find what's comfortable for yourself... currently I get a bit of shoulder/neck ache from it and so have been experimenting with adjusting my shoulder rest etc., gradually getting better. As for the violin/fiddle discrepancy, my teacher refers to it with both names equally, I think the difference is more mental and romantic than actually a physical difference - the violin and fiddle are the same instrument, it's just the more colloquial usage of 'fiddle' that is the difference
@Ayumura9614 жыл бұрын
omg, screw the hand position thing, i've never in my life seen FIDDLERS holding the violin right, its awesome that you're into it and having fun and we totally enjoy it, that was great

tru ya can get a bad back from it but if she is comfortable playin that way and she sounds great she doesnt have to change!! I say you probably would if she doesnt play classical music..ya never knw though!! she could play both! or many other different styles!
