★ 4K Cab ride 🇨🇭St. Moritz - 🇮🇹Tirano, fresh snow, strong winds & snowdrifts [03.2020]

The Bernina railway sets a few records, including being the highest railway alpine crossing in Europe (2253m), the highest adhesion railway of the continent, the open air railway with the greatest height difference (1824m) and furthermore one of the steepest adhesion railways (conventional railway without cogs) worldwide, with gradients of up to 7%.
The gradients are included in the upper right corner in the same format as they appear to the driver. The arrow indicates whether the gradient is up or down, the larger number is the promille value (1/10 of 1%) and the smaller number indicates the distance of the gradient in meters. You will also see station names with their altitude, tunnel and bridge names with their length and year of construction - as well as other interesting information along the way to improve your viewing experience.
A unique aspect of Switzerland's narrow gauge mountain railways is the mixing of passenger and freight wagons in a single train, with wagons often added or removed at intermediate stops with shunting locomotives. On the Bernina line, the cargo mostly consists of wood on stake cars and derivatives of oil in tank cars. Today we
take a wagon with us from Pontresina to Poschiavo with good for a Coop supermarket.

the best vacation I ever took was buying a 1st class Euro Rail pass that was good for train travel all over Europe back in 1981. My wife and I would often have 1st class compartments to ourselves and we'd put our feet up, smoke French cigs and sip German beer while we watched the changing landscapes roll by. If it took our fancy we'd hop off the train in a pretty little village and stay for a day or so then grab another train heading off to where ever. We went from Amsterdam to Pompeii and then everywhere in Italy. We went to Munich for the beer fest, then on to Vienna. We went every we wanted to go except Greece which I now regret not seeing as I'll never make it back now. Still what memories.

Es ist beeindruckend, wie selbstverständlich der Triebwagenführer ein Gleis befährt, dessen Schienen völlig unter einer Schneedecke liegen. Man weiß nicht, ob nur 10 cm oder 30 cm und mehr Schnee über den Schienen liegen. Als "Flachland-Deutscher" habe ich null Erfahrung mit den hoch-alpinen Situationen im Winter. TGV's are really a nightmare when snowing, they can't handle light snow when its like dust, it clogging the lateral panels causing overeating or short circuits.

I can't help but think that, starting out at St. Moritz, the operator must frequently push the "I BELIEVE" button: "I BELIEVE there's track beneath the snow and it's in good order." I must say, that was one heck of a journey through the blizzards. How the train driver managed to wade through the storm is nothing sort of a miracle. In such treacherous weather in our country the entire train operations would have shut down as it doesn't have the equipment to handle that kind of snow blizzards. Anyway, it was a lovely journey. Just beautiful. I have been over this line in the summer. This is very different. The grade at the Brusio loop is 7%. But the video shows, most of the line decends beyond that at the same amazing grade. An Allegra pulling 6 coaches going up is almost unbelievable. Very interesting and well done video. This is truly stunning, and what a difference from the summer journey. We were lucky enough to do the Tirano to St. Moritz journey in summer 2018. As others have said, it is almost surreal when you can't see the rails and the train just seems to glide through an open scenery. I am very impressed with the control the driver has on icy rails when stopping and accelerating, especially considering the gradient and non-rack & pinion traction. I am concerned with the near white out conditions. Hopefully the audio signal warning systems are reliable cause the driver must have difficulty spotting the small colour lights.
