Welcome back to another Slow Fashion Friday video where I am decluttering my home & my reselling business, one trash bag at a time! This is week 2 in my series! I am tackling a corner of my bedroom that hasn’t been clear in years & we’ll be organizing shoes in my inventory!! Each week I am one step closer to my clutter-free goals! I hope you enjoy it!

I always take my older or stained blankets, mismatched sheets and pillowcases, and stained or tattered towels to the animal shelter. They use the heck out of those things. If I find things like that in a thrift store, if the price is right, I'll purchase it and head straight to the shelter!
@thriftwithjoy Жыл бұрын
It's great what you are doing Lori! I just wonder about donating items with major flaws or no value. Why don't same the thrift store the expense of going though so items and perhaps just throwing them away? Also save shoppers the disappointment of unknowingly purchasing a flawed item? This is something I struggle with because I want to save things from the land fill, but some things are too far gone. But the main thing is to get it gone, so keep going!
@karmenmrak Жыл бұрын
Same! I don’t judge Lori, just bothered me every time she puts damaged item in donate pile. I don’t know how are thing handled in the States, but in Europe we have recycle bins for fabric.
@Trissysdollhouse Жыл бұрын
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Many times there are things people put in the trash that they thought were useless. I’ve picked them up and either used or sold them. Someone could easily custom dye flawed items and upcyclers would cringe if she threw all that fabric away.
@thriftwithjoy Жыл бұрын
@@thereclaimedlife Oh, that is really interesting...so then does Goodwill export their discarded textiles to another state? Or do they have connections to large textile recyclers? I am very interested in any possible solutions. I just hate to think of the thrift stores putting these things with major flaws back on the racks to be purchased by people (like me) who are not that good at finding flaws when shopping. Then I don't want to discard them and leave them in a "death pile" or re-donate which is just perpetuating the cycle.
@tara1638 Жыл бұрын
Thrift stores like goodwill are supposed to recycle textiles. So hopefully they do.
@cindygallagher1017 Жыл бұрын
American Recyclers takes clothes, but TerraCycle sends you a box to fill and return to them. And check with name brand companies to see if they have a damaged clothing recycling program. I think Patagonia does, and Lululemon, I believe, gives you a discount for bringing items in. I have a friend who unravels yarn from damaged sweaters and uses it for new projects!

Excellent job! You are so inspiring! My new rule is that if even if I paid a lot for it, if it is not being used it is going. I am also trying to buy things for the life I have, not whatever fantasy life is going on in my head. I saw a stunning leather bag last week but very formal office style. I wanted it sooo badly but I told myself “get a grip” I am 66 and retired. It was not the kind of bag one takes to Target😂
@gail9289 Жыл бұрын
As a sewer I have a lot of fabric and the call to buy is always loud. Sewers have a saying to help them from overbuying and it's "shop your stash". Watching you find treasures as you declutter reminded me of this and that I need to shop my stash more. I'm sure I'm going to find some hidden gems that would look awesome sewn up. I bet you never thought your videos would apply to sewers but they do.

What I am noticing in this video is how having too much stuff is a learned behavior. I see this between myself and my daughter. She is like Angie and brings me bags of clothing to list. I think back to when I was a kid, I had nothing. I am shocked at how much stuff our kids accumulate. I am trying to work with my daughter to not be such a consumer and to not by such cheap stuff. I admire your showing this side of your life.
@annholland51 Жыл бұрын
Trying to work with your daughter "to not be such a consumer" struck a chord with me!! When my daughter was a sophomore in college she had a huge pile of clothing to take to Plato's Closet. Much of it new with tags. I asked her to leave it with me for our housekeeper's teenage daughter who had gone back to Brazil and had very little. She refused. I never heard the end of it. I became quite angry about her lack of generosity toward a friend's daughter, as I had come to really love this person. She also became argumentative. I told her to get the F out of my house (she was here to pick up family furniture that I was giving to her). I ended up with the clothes, put them in a suitcase in the attic and have not opened it since. I'm not sure what the moral to this story is, except that I handled it very poorly!!! In fact I would love to hear input and don't expect it to be complimentary!! My husband brings this up every time he gets angry with me. It certainly eats on me. I know I was wrong but, 20 years later, it is still being thrown back at me. Any input would be accepted graciously. I don't expect forgiveness at this point. Oh my!! Please delete any or all of this!!!!!!!
@skyiscrying Жыл бұрын
You deserve forgiveness, and it's petty for your husband to bring it up 20 years later.
@marilynbarlow8978 Жыл бұрын
@@annholland51 Mail the clothes to your daughter or donate them. Forgive yourself, I'm sure you and your daughter have changed since this time. As for your husband, tell him it is your business, not his, let him know that his bringing it up is not appreciated, then bring up something he is ashamed of or embarrassed by. My husband tried to make me forgive my brother for something by calling him. I looked at him & asked him when was the last time he spoke to his brother, then I reminded him that is was my business not his. Of course, my brother & I speak now but at the time I did not want any advice on MY business. Being married doesn't give him the right to my feelings. It's disrespect on his part, dont take any disrespect from him or your daughter. Stand up for yourself, no one else is going to do it for you.

I love the Slow Fashion Friday videos. I recently started to purge my items as well. My death pile was about 15 bins full of clothing. I'm now down to 7 bins in less than a couple weeks. I've posted, donated and also set aside some items for my yearly yard sale. As for my personal items, I am starting that this week. I went through my own clothing several months ago and can fit my entire wardrobe in my one dresser. My closet has only a couple sweaters and pants in it. My daughter was starting to worry say that the house is starting to look empty. I said, "no honey, the house finally feels open and flowy. I think she is starting the see my vision. It's so much easier to clean uncluttered spaces. Here's to all of us tackling our clutter one day at a time!!

Why would you donate stained items?? Who would want that? If it is stained, I usually use it for rags or throw it away. Just curious.
@emilyvoorhees240 Жыл бұрын
Or just put it in one of the clothes recycling bins. There is no point in donating clothes to a thrift store that will never get bought! Those recycle bins break down the fabric to be repurposed, as opposed to ending up in a landfill
@thriftwithjoy Жыл бұрын
@@emilyvoorhees240 Totally agree...I've never seen a clothing recycle bin though. Can you tell us more about how to find one?
@rachellejean-batiste208 Жыл бұрын
@andreabower7693 Just thinking. Is it possible the stain is removable but she doesn’t want or have the time to do take care of the stain?
@sherrymcgill6356 Жыл бұрын
There are many people who upcycle items. Just because you may not wear a shirt that has a stain, doesn't mean it cant find a new life. People make quilts and pillows out of recycled t-shirts and other scraps...purses out of jeans. I have a friend who loves patches...she will put patches on things, even to cover stains or discolorations that reflect her personality and she has her own unique style. People make fabric tie rugs...I personally donate stained/worn towels, sheets, pillowcases and blankets to animal shelters where they will get much more life from them.
@thriftwithjoy Жыл бұрын
@@sherrymcgill6356 I agree with you...but...who is going to go to a thrift store and knowingly pay up to get such items? In my area, I have noticed that Goodwill in particular, does not mark items as "for upcycling" "flawed" or even "ASIS." Then someone (perhaps like you or me) will buy it and eat the cost and either repair it (donating our labor and time) or "re-donate" it and start the cycle all over again.

But how much do you spend a month on inventory vs your net profit? Would be interesting to know.
