Brilliant video! You can see the rotors taking the weight of the water as they fill up. Super close ups of the them too, especially the rotor heads

Kind of like con Na Da. I live near these areas and went through several fires, I have nothing but praise for OUR firefighters. THANK YOU FIREFIGHTERS!~

First of all LAFD doesn't own Skycranes. That's Erikson Helicopters out of Oregon on USFS call when needed contract for forest fire resource order to assist LAFD Second as a retired wildland firefighter it was a pleasure to work with these big birds on the fires I was assigned to across our beautiful country. Third for 2018 guys and gals be safe we don't need to lose anyone over an acre of forest or grassland. Remember the grass and trees grow back we don't.

Well, one of the helicopters gets leased from "the company formerly known as Erickson Air-Crane", now "Erickson Inc" (Central Point, Oregon) by the City of LA fire department, and one from the LA County FD. Both are stationed during that time at Van Nuys airport. A friend of mine is flying and being an instructor on those (Hi Kris!)

As the two helicopters gather water for their young, they take turns, probosces extended, in one of natures most beautiful ballets. Life is short for the Sky Crane Tanker Fire Helicopter, only living one month to mate and bring forth their young.

Cool vid....some of these copters actually can have a water canon mounted near the nose of the aircraft. Pretty amazing.

First helicopter made it look easy, so had to be a seasoned Skycrane pilot at the controls. Second helicopter had trouble especially at the start when he dumped water and took on new reserves. This stuff is so hard and requires so much focus and skill, it's what got me interested in becoming a helicopter pilot.

Seen a lot of that action over the Old Fire during the October 2003 wildfires. There’d been some pilot fatalities, too.

That helicopter saved lives of lots of people.

These actually belong to Erickson Air-Crane Inc as seen by their logo under the PIC's window and also by looking up the N-number. They're a great bunch of guys! Had the privilege to meet the crew in Custer, SD in 2011 during the summer fires. They only need 10" of water (or something of the sort) and will take on the full capacity in under a minute. I believe they're rated at 22,000 lbs capacity which is just under 2800 Gal of water! some very impressive machines that require a semi for fuel!

Damn! look at the blade coning @ 3:33 when they are full of water. These Chopper have a max gross weight of 75,000 lbs probably not even close to that with the water. Great quality video by the way. Wish they were all like this.

This Helitanker is on contract with LA County Fire and there is one on Contract with LA City Fire. They have decals on the tailboom LACo & City. They're Own and operated by Erickson Air Crane located in Central Point, Oregon. Erickson has the Type Certificate for the Sikorsky S 64 E/F model which was bought from Sikorsky in 1992. There are only 35 out 100 that were made in operation. 10 of them were assigned to the Station fire. Google Erickson and get educated!

The impact from one of these dumping is powerful and dangerous. I am a firefighter and just escaped getting dumped on by a Chinook with a bucket (similar amount of water). It busted the top of a tree where we were sitting and broke the cover on my stihl chainsaw..

Actually, if you watch closely, the second helicopter approaches with it water bombay doors open. When they start pumping the water the water just falls back out the open bombay doors. I'm sure there was a quick discussion about something being wrong and you are seeing the recovery.

Well, there were these two ol' helicopters and they hung their hoses down to the water to refill. One ol' helicopter from California, the other from California, too. The ol' helicopter from California says, "Boy, this water's cold", and the other ol' helicopter from California says, "Yeah, and it's deep too."

Sounds like a good idea. Sometimes people just don't think of it, or maybe they do, do it. See my ch for a chopper that is different (a few). I saw the thumbnail of this video and it looked like a bus, so now I'm going to put a video on of a chopper-bus design. lol A chopper with good suspension and four wheels and the rotor folds back (like the Osprey rotors). Tail rotor too (or enclosed). I also have a flying bike. And like the chopper-bus, the flying bike came from another thing that worked.

Still got my flt.suit and helmet from flying U.S.C.G. HH52a,s. Easily one of the hardest things you can possibly do is hover a helo. Over water AND taking on water has got to be a stone bitch to do. My helmets off to those pilots.

@glucia80511 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. As far as I know no copter has gone down while drafting on a fire. Until recently tanks were the only way to do multiple drops from the same load. SEI now has a Bambi bucket that does so they are even in that aspect, but that is a very new thing. Buckets require a place dip deep enough to sink the bucket unless you put a pump on them. They also slow you down you cannot fly fast with them, they really mess with your COG and you have swinging weight especially the large size.

@glucia80511 жыл бұрын
You also have a hanging object that can get caught on something. Tanks have the options of landing at any helispot and getting filled, buckets have to have a dip tank set up. Finally and why you don't see buckets hanging off of copters in Socal, is a tank can't fall off or be dropped on accident. A 22,000lbs bucket falling from the sky is bad, epscially in urban areas. In many place you are not allowed to use them in populated areas.
