Lifelong exposure to drugs and violence, often generations old. If you tried to tell them to work or not waste their life like this, they wouldn't even understand what you're saying. In their minds, it's just "survive till you eventually kick the cab", and they've already seen so many relatives or friends do so, they almost expect it to happen to them some day. When you've watched someone you know and loved just, get shot in front of you as a kid, you sort of start to live every day like it's your last. In their minds, they're already done.
