You have some great destinations planned Craig. I did a cross-country trip in 2007. At a gas stop a guy told me I need to go to Crater Lake. I never heard of it before. Boy, was he right. It was a good lesson in keeping plans somewhat flexible and seeing things you never expected.

Good choices you're making! I assume you'll be staying at the Ragged Point Inn - not sure if there's any other lodging there. My wife & I stayed there a few years back while riding my Triumph Trophy up to the Monterey area, and found the Inn to be an amazing place to stay. The views are breathtaking, and our room was about 20 feet from a cliff overlooking a small cove. It's a little pricey, but the memories are worth every penny! Also, PCH is wide open, the road closures from rockslides were cleared last summer. It's going to be an epic vacation!

Yes, we are at the Ragged Point Inn, looks like a great place, but as you mentioned, it is pricey...but you only live once so we are splurging at bit along PCH. Thanks for a heads up on the roads. Here is to hoping they stay open!! Thanks!

On the trip home, when you are going from Missoula to Bozeman, get off I-90 at Garrison junction, and take hiway 12 to Helena. You will ride over McDonald pass to Helena. For the pass, it is 4 lane with really nice big sweeping turns. At Helena if you continue on 287/12 through East Helena, and Townsend. You will rejoin I-90 near Three Forks. It only adds 10 miles to the trip (although more time because you ride through Helena). Wheat Montana is right where you rejoin I-90. You have to stop there for a cinnamon roll and coffee.

Craig, if they still haven’t cleared the rock slide on the PCH the Nacimiento- Ferguson Rd is probably the best road I have ever ridden! I believe it is all open now but that was one of those detours that turned into a blessing! Look it up on the map. Even if you just went up from the PCH to the top of Nacimiento the ride back down is a breathtaking! Ride Safe!

Sounds like a plan. We saw Devil's Tower early in the morning. Even on non-event days ~Sturgis~ it gets crowded later in the day. Be sure to look UP for climbers there. Geez, scarey stuff! Needles is great. Watch out for a few super twisty switchbacks with elevation changes. During Sturgis we saw many folks stopped on the side of the road before one of these and considering turning back. It's not too bad, but it helps knowing that there are a few very challenging turns. It's a wee bit out of the way, but if you go to Custer State Park just south of there you might get up and personal with some buffalo. In Rapid City, Black Hills Harley-Davidson is a nice stop if you want to visit the dark side. We'll be watchin'. S

Hello Craig I live in Northern California and would be happy to help you get answers to any questions you might have about riding between San Francisco and Crater Lake. One thing about the Nor Cal coast - it can be very cold and foggy in the summer. Bring warm gear. You are going to have an awesome ride. Enjoy!

Duluth MN to Grand Marais up the north side of Superior is one of the prettiest rides anywhere but going up over the top of Lake Superior is often a cool/cold & rainy affair. You could opt for a more southern route and take the Badger ferry from Manitowoc to Ludington which would give you a few hours off the bike but still making miles and keeping you away from Chicago. I'm looking forward to your videos of the trip. If you end up in the Minneapolis area or want a riding buddy across the state - let me know.

Craig, As you head from LA up north to Half moon Bay up to Cresent city CA, It is VERY cold that time of year, That nasty FOG will be there no keep the warm gear ready. Its generally Foggy ALL day from San Luis Obispo north. Are you heading east on highway 199 (Redwood Highway) from Cresent City? Some really pretty Redwoods there! If you do you will go through Grants Pass on your way to Crater Lake (That's were I live, Grants Pass) It will warm up about 20 degrees from the coast to Grants Pass, And stay warm til you get to Crater Lake. Safe travels my friend!

Living Off The Slab Depending on your dates from NorCal to Grants Pass, I may be able to ride along for a bit. One of your other subscribers was correct, it can get pretty chilly with the fog & wind along the coast. Then towards Grants Pass & further inland it’ll get hotter than hell!

@@LivingOffTheSlab I was just watching the Boston to LA video (of course I have to watch out of order hehe) and it occurred to me to check your itinerary leaving LA. I lived in LA in the early 90's and have a sister who lives in Sonoma. I usually did the 5 hour drive on I-5 but for the scenic stuff, I wanted to advise on taking two days for that, which you have. I never made it to Ragged Point but did have a comfortable stay in Cambria, just South of there. Anyways, soak it in and take your time. So much good stuff to see.

If you haven’t picked out your motel yet in Rapid City, consider the Big Sky Lodge. We stayed there in 2017 and it was a nice place. Not fancy, but clean, and with a nice view overlooking the city. We spent some time in their outdoor hot tub and they have a bike wash area which was great as our bikes were a little grubby after a week of riding to get there from PA. And, I think they also had a guest laundry that we used. bigskylodge.com. I have no affiliation with this motel other than being a satisfied customer.
