How could you cover Southern California music without the Beach Boys? Here’s the big hit from their album, Holland.
Conrad: Blondie Chaplin sang the lead on that one. He jammed with us at the Fillmore one time and we did this song. That’s how we learned it. The Beach Boys were one of my all-time favorite bands, ever since I was 13, 14 years old. “Sail On Sailor” was a song I just fell in love with.
Steve: Our engineer Chris Sorem did a fantastic job capturing the mystical California vibe of this song - not an easy thing to accomplish. He really helped us hold this record together for a year across all our staggered recording sessions.
Louie: Bugs Gonzalez was in town for a livestream benefit with us in the studio, and he’s a fantastic singer, so we asked him to sing on this one. We really appreciate everything Bugs did for us, everything he did with the band.

The key to covering "Sail On Sailor" is to just let it groove. Don't push it too hard...just let it flow. Los Lobos has done this beautifully. Nice version. Dig.

@@rickenjoey You're welcome. I do want to add that I'm a well known Beach Boys Historian/Fan. I've spent time with Brian sitting at his piano and listening and watching him play. He's got really big hands. But the one thing I remember, he doesn't always really play with his hands at all times. It comes from a different place, hard to explain, but somewhat (in my opinion) from his heart and soul. Many I've told this to, agree that a lot of Brian's music is from exactly there. Tapping into this can be difficult for those who don't understand. But I think, a lot of people feel connected to Brian, when they let their heart and soul take over. I read that in your comment, when you said, "I just let it flow. Didn't push too hard"...exactly!! Best to you, DmGrk

@@SDsailor7 It was actually Blondie Chaplin who sang this on the Beach Boys' HOLLAND album. Blondie joined the Beach Boys (along with Rikki Fataar) in 1972. They were both members of the South African band call THE FLAMES (later just FLAME). Carl Wilson produced an album for them in 1972.

I think it’s pretty difficult to cover a song and even harder to make it BETTER than the original…. Somehow, Los Lobos not only put their own sound on this song…. Holland is a dreadfully underappreciated, underrated album. Nice cover. This song was added to Holland because the record company didn't believe Holland had a hit single on it so with some prompting, Brian Wilson finished writing the song.
