Gotta say 15 yrs later I’m grateful this video is still up and I found it. I’m I big Jer and LP fan, so watching him navigate that guitar to a sound somewhat familiar to his own “preferred” guitar is a fun watch…and from the first note it’s identifiably Garcia!

How many times do ya get to hear garcia play a les paul? I just got into the bay area the day of this show on an extra long flight and got a little sleep and went over and it was well worth it.The strange thing was when we were leaving garcia was just getting to his car and we commented on his les paul sound and he could not stop laughing and told him we would catch him the next day in oakland.

I wonder if this gave Jerry flashbacks to his time playing gold-top Les Pauls back in '67-'68? Different pickups, but he's kind of getting that late-60's tone here! His later custom guitars had a much more focused, plucky kinda sound that he wanted, but this tone is almost like Anthem of the Sun, or Live/Dead (when he played an SG)!

There are a lot of dumb people who have access to computers, and just want to blow smoke somewhere. This was Los Lobos and Jerry Garcia jamming on a cover, having some fun. Whatever weakness there is in the sound is due to the quality of the recording. It has a lot of life, which is what music is for. If you have seen John Fogerty lately with his new band, he pretty much phones it in. I wonder how many people who call musicians crappy actually know how to play an instrument, or can read a note.

this is a lot of fun for the shear novelty of seeing Garcia in a small club in '89. Yea, his tone is off a bit and there is a bit of unintended feedback going on here and there but so what. the solo starts out a bit rough then gains a bit of steam then he starts fighting the tone a bit. i have always enjoyed watching him play even if there is an occasional slip or stumble. the guy just rocked...

@mkthddhd I should have said he did not use strat"s or les pauls exclusively the way he used his doug irwin guitars. The travis bean pretty much was his 1976 guitar .The sound he got out of it was cool but the irwin"s i thought gave a much better sound, it was a deeper,and a more full sound...I now know i need to check my post" for mistakes. I stand corrected be cool bro.
@coyote02313 жыл бұрын
@setboy1 If you read my post a little slower i said he did not use them EXCLUSIVELY the way he used his doug irwin"s . That black strat with those horrendous midi sounds was not used in "88 but he did use it after the drums for maybe 10 minutes and even that was way to long. Wherever you got the info about his irwins costing $10,000 that was a little off the mark. Do you know how long it took D.I. to make them? One of jerry"s strat"s was given to him by Graham Nash and he used that one for awhil

@coyote02314 жыл бұрын
@jab3785 Garcia never used a les paul and as far as the strat goes he never used them either and those custom guitars you speak of are Doug Irwin"s the tiger and rosebud set jerry back a cool $40,000 each after jerry passed "the wolf" and "the tiger' were auctioned off and brought in almost a million bucks each and they both had amazing sounds come out of them up until bob bralove put that horrific midi computer sounds. I cannot listen to a single tape with that noise coming out .

Actually, his diabetic coma was in 1986, and he did jam with Los Lobos for his first public appearance after that. However, this performance was three years later. Choice of songs most likely influenced by the AIDS benefit the GD and Fogerty played a couple of days later at the Oakland Coliseum, at which Garcia and Weir backed Forgerty.

Was that the successor to George's 440 Club? (Hell, was that the name?) Spent some time there in the early to mid-'70s, good bar with a good jukebox (Shinin' Star by EWF is the only tune I can remember listening to on it). Anyhow, great to see LL and JG in any context. Thanks for uploading!
@Spongybugman13 жыл бұрын
@irtimed Yea, I caught that too.. he seems none too pleased with his tone by all the the fiddling he's doing with the tone knobs and toggle switch. Jerry would sound like Jerry even if he was playing a kazoo.
@setboy113 жыл бұрын
@coyote023 Your info is way off. Jerry did use pauls as late as 1971. The Irwin's didn't cost him 40,000 each. try more like 10,000. He also used strats into the start of 1973. and in 88-89 he had a black strat with that Midi you hate so much for when they played space.
@blugoo0912 жыл бұрын
Jerry heard the music in his own way.
@setboy113 жыл бұрын
@coyote023 Not a matter of reading slower. it's matter of not reading your other post taking what you had said back. Here is what you said "Garcia never used a les paul and as far as the strat goes he never used them either" What are people supposed to think when you say this other than that you are saying he never used them? If you read Blair Jackson's book it say that tiger cost Garcia $5,800. and rosebud cost $11,000. Those are no where close to $40,000
