I made a video about why losing is fun/isn't fun in video games. Very unorganized and I ramble quite a bit. Zero credibility because I'm just a guy and I'm just saying what I'm thinking but making it sound okay.
With footage from:

/ watchv=he2e3qs3rta&t=5...
and also a bunch of game trailers from a bunch of gaming journalism channels
Games shown:
Risk of Rain 2
Slay the Spire
Lethal Company
Valorant
Marvel's Spiderman 2
Trails in the Sky SC
Stardew Valley
Elden Ring
Bloodborne
Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3

OMG don't let me get started on fighting games. My real life friends don't play with me because I beat the shit out of them WITHOUT trying. I have to pretend i'm playing bad so they have a chance. It's crazy how they think they're so good after beating me. I swear playing league of Legends evolved my freaking mind while everyone else still chases the adrenaline and feeling of superiority for beating a weak ass person. I don't give a shit anymore but maybe I'm just different and only find meaning in chasing harder and harder things. Easy things don't satisfy me. People go as far as smurfing in league of getting a low rank player in your team in COD just so you can find more newbs to squash and make them want to uninstall and also get as many nukes as possible by beating said newbs. That is not even competition it's easy, relatively at least. Easy for their skill level. Why? Why is the overwhelming majority like this? This translates to your behaviour in jobs.

Always remember that the chance of a troll being in the enemy team is statistically higher than in yours, since you can actually decide if 1 player in your team (yourself) trolls. :) I recommend to always play with a friend (that isn't whiny/toxic), because it makes it a little bit more bearable when you lose. (That also means you indirectly have control over 2 people trolling in the game, yourself and them.) "Competitive" games are a blight to ones mental health, its preferable to just quit them outright and to play games that are actually good/fun instead of ones with an artificial skill ceiling (you can only do so much) and obscure matchmaking balancing system (usually doesn't scales rank points gains/losses dynamically based on how "difficult"/skewed the game was).
@Pompadourius
@Pompadourius 7 ай бұрын
This is also why I don't play ranked until I'm either really good, or just not at all. So many people stress about getting demoted in fighting games or something, and then quit because they went on a losing streak and went down an entire rank or two. Just play for the sake of improvement itself, at that point.

Souls games have mastered the art of consistent feedback, which is the most important thing for gaining competence. In "competitive" multiplayer games, real people can't punish every single mistake you make, so its harder to identify what you do right / wrong. Neither winning nor losing is inherently fun, but feeling your improvement is.
@jooot_6850
@jooot_6850 7 ай бұрын
It’s hard to feel consistent improvements against an inconsistent competitor, too. Sometimes your particular style of play works very well against someone, so you feel as if you’re improving, but then it may also fair poorly against another’s. With a boss battle you can consistently see how well you are learning it’s patterns

this is a topic i've thought a lot about after taking a complete break from competitive FPS games almost two years ago now (and feeling much better for it) from what i see, so, SO many games these days are made with the sole goal of rewarding the winners and punishing the losers which, on paper, seems like a perfectly reasonable design philosophy. in reality it greatly dissuades the underdogs from sticking with the game and having fun, because the clearly imbalanced reward distribution makes winning an objectively better thing to do than losing; the player is no longer trying to win for themselves, they are trying to win for a battle pass or a challenge or worse, to have fun in the first place. this imbalance also makes snowballing very common, people with more content in a game are more likely to stick with it, meaning the winners keep winning and the losers keep losing (this ties into the greater skill-based matchmaking issue that plagues competitive games). in reality, neither winning nor losing are inherently good or bad outcomes, they have been artificially assigned a place on dopamine scale to keep people coming back.

I think a big problem these days is actually putting AI in ranked matches, but giving them player names so nobody can tell they're against AI. This gives people the victory hit, without requiring them to improve at all. It locks people into a mindset that they're making the right moves when they aren't, and traps them in a system that has to hand them wins.

Glad you touched on it in the end. There are two ways that losing can be fun. Everyone focuses on the one way where you get a sense of accomplishment from struggling to conquer something difficult. That's valid. It's not often recognized that losing can be fun when there's a good story to it. When it's funny, spectacular, or otherwise memorable. There aren't enough games that capitalize on this. This is why I love Dwarf Fortress, and why it is the game that popularized the saying "Losing is Fun". When your people retreat into the fortress to weather a siege, but the front door doesn't close because a dead butterfly was blocking it. When your king's cat dies, so they throw a fit and punch someone, they punch back, then everyone dogpiles them for committing treason, and the entire settlement destroys itself in a riot. You will chuckle every time you're reminded of those moments for the rest of your life, even if they marked the end of 200 hours of playtime. It's gold. And yeah, Lethal Company is great at producing those, too. We need more games that do this.

what makes a lot of these games worse is "gotcha" difficulty. When a game kills you for not having knowledge you'd have no real reason of having. It dramatically hurts games replay value aswell. A lot of the time with rougelikes you can with zero luck beat a run, the issue is if i have to do another isaac no items run i may actually rip my hair out because of how god awfully boring it is. So you're faced with the option of 1) get a good run 2) don't enjoy the game
@kamikeserpentail3778
@kamikeserpentail3778 7 ай бұрын
That depends. People like Kaizo Mario runs despite the "gotchas", and the Souls games are also essentially designed like that. Decent roguelikes like Binding of Isaac also throw you in pretty blind, but with enough knowledge you start finding opportunities all over the place, after you know what risks are worth taking.

I'm glad this video randomly popped into my recommendations after I was giving Lethal Company a try solo, after not feeling motivated for a more serious pvp-game I was playing with my friends. Some of them asked me why I was playing alone and said that I should play with friends to make it easier, and it was originally to see how well it runs on my laptop, but I liked the intensity and challenge of seeing if I could possibly meet quota more than once, then understanding what I did wrong and being able to jump back in again. I know I could make it easier with other people, but I like seeing myself possibly making it further. I'm realizing this might not be a good example of the original lesson this video was trying to teach, but I'm just happy to see someone else say that losing is fun; dying, learning, and trying again.

I was introduced to this idea back with Dwarf Fortress. DF really takes this philosophy and runs with it (to the point that “Losing Is Fun” is the game’s unofficial motto). It accomplished that by making losing both an inevitability and a spectacle. Like, from the moment you start a fort, it is destined to collapse. It may take years, but Great Armok will claim it in time. The question is no longer “how do I win?”, it is instead “how do I last as long as I can and make my end as glorious as possible?”

I never even got slightly tilted at it, how could I? it was an amazing fight and it's not the dying or the restarting the fight that's annoying it's the things that surround that: loading screens, run-backs, cutscenes; skippable or not skippable still both annoying honestly. But it didn't have any of that. You die > You press 1 button > You take a step forward > annnnd you're back in the fight seamlessly just like that

Kind of learned to be fine with losing with games like Gradius 3, Diablo 2 Hardcore and Resident Evil 2 and 3. With Gradius it was essentially pattern learning, D2 was a lot of luck and planning, and the Re 2 and 3 was a mix of the two, which I learned how to plan saves and get times down as close to 2 hours as possible. Then... I fell in love with The Binding of Isaac, which opened my eyes to Rogue, ADoM, and of course, Dark Souls. It took me like 4 or 5 months of playing anywhere from 3 to 8 hours a day to finish. I remember specifically getting cursed before one of the major patches made it easy to cure, so I just started over. Definitely wanted to stomp the fuck out of my 360 sometimes, but every boss kill was like a hit of heroin. That said, Need For Speed Most Wanted on 360 turned me into a caveman. Would snap at anyone nearby, then had to apologize when I stopped seeing red. Also loved those games in spite of the madness.

I’ve played Overwatch competitive since the initial release in 2016 and this was a mindset I eventually adopted. I am completely detached from the win or loss now, I only play to improve. Of course I’m happy when I win, but I take the losses as an opportunity to analyze what went wrong and how I can do things differently to prevent it next time. I know that as long as I keep improving, I’ll eventually rank up. So there is no point to focus on the result, it’s the problem-solving process that is fun for me.

Not the content I'd expect given the title, but interesting view nonetheless. Not a one I agree with, but still valuable in some aspects. Toxicity in competitive games has always been a part of it for me, I don't think I'd enjoy gaming as much as I would were everyone in multiplayer kind to each other. I grew up on CoD, with all the stereotypical experiences of that platform: Slurs of racism, ableism and other fun isms; and because I grew up on it, it became normal to me. I'd wager there's a decent deal of people in a similar condition. I don't see red, I don't get angry over craptalk, I don't carry these mannerisms to other aspects of my life. I genuinely doubt people in general do - they wouldn't be in a position to afford to play the game in the first place if they did, money or time wise. Almost any anger I feel throughout those games isn't actual soul-eating anger like you'd feel if someone poisoned your dog or worse, it's a sort of determination to become better at the game. Thrashtalking others and being thrashtalked yourself is fun, an undeniable part of a lot of these games. Some people like you tend to assign it some serious value and fair enough, you did give out an example that made you consider it this way, but I think it's important to realize it's a 1 in a million occurrence and most people just move on with their lives. I don't think one should base their behavior around rare happenstance instead of the norm. The compromises that approach to life would require are an insane price to pay for 1 less hurt soul, and I'm not entirely sure they'd even appreciate being treated like this in their decidedly unhealthy mental state of the moment. The reality of the matter is people play games they like, they invest time, and they'd like that time to be well spent. They don't derive joy from interacting with other players, they derive it from getting better - something that requires investment and with great investment comes great anger management issues. To these players, not being invested enough to get angry is a lack of will to get better, at which point: why are you even playing the game? The conflict doesn't arise from these players on their own, it arises from mixing a player seeking a casual experience with a bit of rank on the line with a player actively attempting to improve.

Hey just wanted to say that this is a very insightful comment and I’m glad you posted it. I definitely understand where you’re coming from and I hope my thoughts didn’t come off as one size fits all kind of opinion because I think there’s different allowances for all types of situations. It’s definitely acceptable for different levels of trash talk in more competitive situations but I think it will still get to me when I’m in a more casual or low elo setting with friends and someone blows things out of proportion. I also may have exaggerated a bit on the anger part to make things more entertaining. Trash talking can be fun in the cases of fun banter but when I see someone type out slurs as an insult in the game chat I still can’t understand how that’s fun for them, they always just seem extremely angry. Though all of this might just come from us enjoying games differently. Anyway good comment 👍

Totally fair, but losing over and over and over again because games often put you in scenarios where your against tons of people who are out to make the game as miserable as possible (sweats) or a stupid glitch that randomly happens, it quickly stops being fun.

sweats are interesting, I'm a KBM PC player on all multiplayers personally, and I usually take caffine (most often tea, not that Gfuel shit) and try very hard to win, but I wouldn't really consider myself a sweat/tryhard at all. I don't care if I win or lose most of the time, and I mostly just like to improve. I almost always just play pubs and have 0 earnings on any game, and I don't act like an ass on VC. its just that doing cool shit is fun, if only a percent of the people on the game can do stuff you trained to be able to, its just cool. seeing the result of all the setup optimization, psychologic studying, and aim as well as other skill honing all come together is great. that being said I do have a couple gripes, the things that annoy me with "sweats" personally are: 1. some of these guys don't go outside. Legit have no jobs upwards of sixteen years old and play 14 hours a day, thats unhealthy and it ruins the comp of the game for the people who only play a couple hours a day, because we have other stuff to do. 2. zero ping, nuff said. this is pure RNG as far as location to servers and is annoying as shit in some games, albeit not many 3.getting in a lobby with controller players. I don't wanna get into a lobby and be as strong as a team because my opponents are on a fucking joystick, vice versa if I hop on the controller I don't wanna go against a KB player who is 4 times my skill due to sheer input. Aim assist helps but then the KB players bitch about that. Only applies to shooters as far as I'm aware. So I'm kinda curious what you mean by sweat, where is the line draw between someone whos good and someone who is just unfun to have in the lobby? Also yea Glitches suck.

@@jooot_6850 "meta slaves" as my friend calls them, are one thing. I don't really blame them, I mean, the best items are just better than low tier slop that might be more fun but gets you killed. The exploiters actually do suck imo, I would consider most glitches in online games cheaing, unless it's something that has persisted for years and EVERYONE uses, like the wall exploit shit in fortnite with the ramp or lineups Val/grenade lineups in CSGO if you'd consider those the same way.

Anyway; Ofc everyone is going to play the best they can in ranked, still some things are annoying in certain games, and even if they allow people to win they actually do make the games less fun. take Steve in smash bros for example, a fighter so busted he just got banned in most tournaments, it was a dumbass playstyle with no counterplay and it just made the game worse, thats the shit people are complaining about, not really people being good, also controller VS keyboard is understandable, you could among the best controller players globally and still be worse than an average 14 year old on a mid pc and a $90 mouse. also I guess sweats in casual lobbies are annoying, but yea, most of the time its just "mad cuz bad".

I've been trying to explain exactly this concept to my friends playing fighting games with me. In my own friend group I'm the second best player but the best player doesn't come around too often working opposite schedules of the rest of us, so when we play together and I become the guy to beat. There's a lot of frustration from them when they lose for potentially 100+ matches against me but the one they win, you'd think they won the f*n lottery. They learned something, they out smarted me, they EARNED that win. It's hard to get people to continue down the path of constant losing if winning is the goal and I always told them "don't play to win, play to be better next time". The endless grind of self improvement is an incredible feeling when you hit that next level up that accumulated from all your previous losses. Losing is also very humbling and will help you be a better person irl I've had to walk away from MTG several times because I became THAT GUY and now when I see it in other people it doesn't offend me, it doesn't make me mad, it makes me feel bad for that person because this game became so much of their identity they forgot how to be a real person and just have f*n fun

I tend to dislike rng games because they make it feel like if i lose i am unlucky so not a real loss and if i win i am just lucky so it does not really count. One of my favorite games is osu for that exact reason. It is just clicking circles i do everything and even though i am not the best it feels way better when you grind a hard map for that SS and then you get it. You notice your skills improving and that makes for the best feeling. I really loved your video. It is wholesome, funny and it makes sense.

When I was obsessed with League chasing the highs of doing great while getting praised by everyone (highly unlikely to happen multiple times) almost every game was a disappointment. I had to slowly get used to play normal offline games to actually enjoy videogames again. I had to convince myself that I was doing great by playing hard games on high difficulties and dominating a game I wasn't meant to master, but to enjoy. I slowly went from souls, to roguelikes, then metroidvanias... and only then I was finally able to chill in survival games or just plain silly RPGs without feeling like my destiny in life was to impress / disappoint people or myself. I could just enjoy a game for what it was and work on my life, which was real challenge I trying so hard to ignore. Last night I was playing a game and suddenly there was a blackout. I lost quite a bit of progress, but I wasn't even mad. I still had a lot of fun. I like the way I appreciate games now.

it was maybe 6 years ago i decided to not play competitive games anymore because i realized i wasn't having fun with them. i've played competitive games since, but i haven't played them competitively. i've played them alongside friends that normally also play casual games with me, and we just have a good time. load up valorant and queue competitive as a full stack, immediately mute enemy chat, and then goof around and try stupid things and team kill for fun etc. i think there are a lot of people with this mindset that don't realize they have it because there are so many popular competitive games they're playing and being forced into the mindset of getting good, outskilling people, and seeing their number go up. we need more games like lethal company, deep rock galactic, team fortress 2 (rest in peace), phasmophobia, among us, etc

I've definitely been getting better at it w/ practicing losing on my own. Lethal Company tho is a totes different thing, probably because I've played more w/ strangers whose opinions of me I don't care about.

IIRC UNIQLO's founder has said once that he is fascinated by failure. Being quite the failure of a member of society as I am, I have always supported the idea that we learn more from failure than we do on success. The one trait I think all gamers should possess is that of grit. It should naturally grow through repeated acceptance of defeat. Thing is, most don't realize the value of failing, and mainstream game design practices certainly never try making losing at least seem enjoyable. Good writing and good ideas all around, looking forward to see you grow.

my take is that losing is fun if it means something, either because you gain something from it (it becomes a learning experience, or otherwise feeds into a sense of progress), or it's funny (it sets up or pays off a bit that might not have even been intentional, or is shocking and/or absurd). every death I remember enjoying has fallen into one of those two camps.

In a weird sense, I have found success in enjoying playing competitive (ranked) in games, primarily R6 and CSGO/2 within the past year. Sure, you will find toxic teammates, but I suppose in a twisted sort of sense, I've found myself enjoying the banter and flaming and retorting creatively when an opportunity arises. I also believe that while I shouldn't care about what other teammates say while being toxic, I do see the person behind the screen and I empathize with them. No player sets out to play a game with the intention of being toxic. Most of what I see as toxicity is people playing expecting too much of their teammates. And while that's not my fault, I would point that out to them. They probably don't enjoy being toxic either. It's not a deliberate action to send those hateful messages; It's an impulsive reaction that they haven't learned to control. And, in full honesty, I don't think it's fair to judge a person for not knowing how to control themselves in these moments when nobody has taught them otherwise. The fact that this is an impulsive reaction also tells me with certainty that they don't mean what they say. It's an offhand remark, not a legitimate criticism, and should be treated as such. Now, I'm not saying that having toxicity and toxic players in competitive games isn't a problem, but it's not necessarily the fault of just a select group of people that we can just deem "toxic" and deserve to be eradicated. They're only human, just like us. Them flaming you for you making a mistake is just them making a mistake too. That happens to everyone. All this to say, empathize with your fellow man, even if they are being at the moment a bit of a toxic PoS. Our best is all we can do in these types of games. The wins and losses will come and go, and we cannot change that. You play the hand you're dealt, try to make it work, and if it doesn't you can rest assured knowing that you gave it your all. On another note, you said to play lethal company as the game to destress from ranked. And while Lethal Company is good, I think that there is a better game to possibly play. You may have heard of it before, or you may have not. The game I speak of is Deep Rock Galactic. The game is a 1-4 players cooperative FPS where you play as space dwarves doing missions for a company, which always involve shooting bugs (unless if you play pacifist which is weird but I don't judge), and while each player can pick a different class to support each other in the game with unique class weapons and abilities, you don't necessarily need that to win. It may not entirely go with the theme of the video being that losing is fun, but a lot of whether you win or lose comes down to both the random chance and how you react to that. There are never any particularly correct ways to play the game, and the game lets you experiment with builds and strategies. In an interesting way, while the game does have an automatic matchmaking system (for each mission that exists at a period of time), there is rarely if ever any toxicity. If you lose, everyone knows that you all tried your best. The game's community is so welcoming, inclusive, and kind that there are people who are in disbelief of how nice the community is (Source: Reddit posts). I might not be able to convince you to play the game from this comment alone, but in that case, just look the game up on youtube. There are countless videos praising the game and how utterly enjoyable it is, some from a game design standpoint, and several others from the community standpoint and personal experience. If a flawless game does exist, this is the closest we have. Wins are very satisfying especially on higher difficulties (although the difficulties don't really go that high without mods). Play it with friends, play it with randoms, or even play it alone (which is not an optimal way to play imo but the game makes it as fun as it can be); You will have a great time. Mining ores in caves, building oil pipelines, and shooting bugs doesn't get more fun than this. Reason I recommend this game over Lethal Company is that while the scares and proximity chat can be funny, cooperating with others can not only be just as funny, but also satisfying. In other words : Rock and Stone, to the Bone!
