"The nuclear-powered Oscar-class submarine Kursk (Russian: Project 949A Антей Atomnaya Podvodnaya Lodka "Kursk" (APL "Kursk")) sank in an accident on 12 August 2000 in the Barents Sea, during the first major Russian naval exercise in more than ten years, and all 118 personnel on board were killed. The crews of nearby ships felt the initial explosion and a second, much larger, explosion; yet the Russian Navy did not realise that an accident had occurred and did not initiate a search for the sub for more than six hours. Because the submarine's emergency rescue buoy had been intentionally disabled during an earlier mission, it took more than 16 hours to locate the sunken boat.
Over four days, the Russian Navy repeatedly failed in its attempts to attach four different diving bells and submersibles to the escape hatch of the submarine. Its response was criticised as slow and inept. Officials misled and manipulated the public and news media, and refused help from other governments. President Vladimir Putin initially continued his vacation at a seaside resort; he authorised the Russian Navy to accept British and Norwegian offers of assistance after five days had passed since the accident. Seven days after the sinking, British and Norwegian divers finally opened a hatch to the escape trunk in the boat's flooded ninth compartment but found no survivors. The Government of Russia and the Russian Navy were intensely criticised over the incident and their responses."

Norway had located(tracked) the sub and knew the exact location, and had the equimpent on stand by to assist in a resuce, this was made public about a year later. Russia said NO.That is why these people died, nothing else

I understand the survivors' lack of enthusiasm for trying their luck in the escape trunk. The depth the Kursk was at was very marginal to survive a buoyant ascent to begin with. (400 feet is considered about the maximum 'safe' depth you can try it, but it was said you could push it as deep as 600 feet.) How do you get out through the escape trunk? Good question. Since you will never overcome the force on the hatch with the differential pressure against you, you have to pressurize the trunk with that of the sea at that depth in order to equalize the pressure and allow you to get the hatch open. Which at 500 feet is ~220 PSIG. Now you have less than a minute to ascend to the surface, exhaling the whole time so yours lungs don't rupture. (Say good bye to your eardrums, my little nublets.) If you don't die in the process, congratulations: you're bobbing in the freezing Barents sea, and no one even knows to come look for you.

I watched the Seconds From Disaster (great series go find the episodes) episode on Kursk. The guy in charge of the reactors stayed at his post to prevent a situation similar to what happened on K-19 from happening. He was found dead, still at the controls during the recovery effort.

I was on shore duty when this event occurred. My fellow submariners at the training center gathered around the TV. I served 23 years in the submarine force, while these men were not my countrymen the are kindred spirits, what a horrifying way to die.
