Y'all ever noticed once a video gains some traction the weirdos and trolls come out in full force? Followed by the "cant afford it" crowd when its those types of videos 😂😂😂what a pathetic bunch

I can certainly afford 4K. But I think some of the prices they are asking are just ridiculous. Even for just standard editions, $25-30 is a bit much, especially for movies I have already bought 2 or 3 times already. Add to that 4K Blu-ray players which there are only like 4 or 5 on the market and they're pretty much all over $300 still. And none of them can seem to make one that doesn't skip on 4K discs.

Collect the movies you love! I think we all have a 10 - 20 range of our absolute favorite movies that we can watch multiple times in the year.

I can relate. I collect a lot but not as much as others I subscribe to. I’m one of those who isn’t opposed to streaming a movie, but I like having a physical copy. Prices keep going up incrementally, and we’re seeing a lot of titles recycling every couple of years. My resolution for 2025 was to cut way back on movie and vinyl purchases.

I won't lie and don't care what someone else thinks or has to say the prices going up is what's making me slow down on Day 1 purchases. At this point it has to be my absolute favorite titles.

Great video! I considered myself a minimalist collector, and tend to buy around 10-12 movies per year… I’m not adverse to streaming or buying a movie digitally either (I use Apple TV+), which a lot of people in this space seem to be. Less is more in my opinion, I feel it allows you to appreciate what you have more! 👍

Now that I discovered 1/2 price Tuesday at the theater. I see what I want for under $7. And think will I buy this on physical format. So far wicked and babygirl I would buy to own. I only collect what I know I would watch, horror, thrillers etc. It’s very much a keep up with the jones these days, and with the prices going up that’s not very sustainable way to collect.

It's easy to fall into the "I have to grab it trap" whether you create content or see people post pictures on social media, many people will fall victim and say "I'll just grab" based off the temptation and these studios and distributors know it. Of course, we should support as much as we can, but at some point, you really gotta ask yourselves, "Is this title worth almost $40 to me?"

Its crazy that this subject still comes up. For me, physical media has more than one purpose. And maybe because im a 80s baby, I miss walking down Blockbuster Isles and blind renting movies just based on the cover art. I have a small peice of that feeling at home. Blind buying is freaking awesome, especially when its a film that I missed growing up and I end up really enjoying. And if the movie sucked, then its an easy sell on ebay. I collect for nostalgia, watching one of my favorite films cleaned up and scanned for 4k and hearing it in the best way possible (Atmos); its like a whole new experience and the best part is, its mine. Streaming is so unreliable. People collect some crazy things, since forever. I just bought a VHS for the 1st time since 90s, and its awesome. My collection has seasons...😂. You wont find a single Christmas movie on my shelf these days, all tucked away until after thanksgiving. Thats just me and its fine, because its my collection. I love how my shelfs are constantly revolving and evolving. Live long Physical Media! 💪

80s baby here also(82), but for me, renting a blind buy for $5 was so much easier than paying $35+ new for one. BB was definitely a great experience, more so with video games for me. There's nothing wrong with blind buying or anyway of collecting. It's what makes all of our collections unique and the best individually. Many hobbies have their low points or topics of discussion that mean more to some than others, such as video games not being in store and going mostly digital, or automakers moving away from big block engines and going electric. It's just a cycle that'll always be a topic of discussion.

That honestly hurt me a lot as well. Not being able to go instore and see items in hand and make impulse buys has put a dampen on the hobby for me. Walmart has not really stepped in and made a difference in my area. If I'm being honest, the shelves are either always half empty, or the store doesn't have many 4Ks at all.

I am always re-evaluating my collecting, it has changed. If I look at my collection from 20 years ago to 10 years ago to now, it has changed and hardly got anything from 20 years ago. I doubt if my passion for getting a new bluray etc will die but realisation that at 60 odd, only limited time to see everything I have and also see the films I want to see. So a bit more decluttering at the moment, just to a more core of the films I like instead of everything. Same with books and comics and lots of other things, just not physical media. Will still love them though

4k was really built for action, horror, and sci-fi. In ny opinion 12:54 i can feel you on the fact im much for hesitant on what movie I'm buying.. also I don't want to start making. I went into debt videos over movies. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Just my thoughts. Plus ill ask people like you, jerry, etc people that don't lie and see if the upgrade is worth it or should I just stay with the Blu-ray. It pays to have friends that speak the truth.

We'll all have different viewing experiences at the end of the day. Some people are ok with movies such as T2, Aliens, and True Lies, and are they wrong for actually liking the transfers? NO!!! It's their opinion and taste... It may be a little baffling, but they aren't wrong for liking it.

I think people burn themselves out by buying too much stuff they'll never watch. Also, collecting best enjoyed being a slow long-term thing. Music collectors have curated their collections sometimes over 50 years. It's also best to evaluate one's collection to take out stuff that no longer interests and never gets watched.
@D82J
@D82J Күн бұрын
I agree with that first statement. A good part of the slow long-term is once you get those titles that you didn't rush to grab Day 1 you feel like you just got it for a steal of a deal later. Many collectors wait until BF and holiday to pick up those titles they weren't that hesitant to grab early on and that's a great way to build the collection and save some bucks. No way is the right way, you do what's best for you individually and say screw you to those that act like you must not be able to afford being a collector for not doing it the way they choose to.

Most of my steelbooks aren't open, and I feel like I need to open them and give each title a watch. I’m definitely buying much less these days (and I typically bought about 10 titles a month). Like you mentioned, I generally am content with where my collection is, so will only really pick something up if it’s through a gift or goes on sale. I do still blind buy often, especially with foreign stuff that fits the genres I generally love the most! This year I’m making a point to focus more on watching my collection than growing it, I don’t rewatch my movies as often as I like. Thanks for the interesting discussion man!

2024, especially, was a very weak year for movies. I think I saw maybe 2 or 3 new films that I felt were worth buying. Wild Robot, Godzilla -1.0 (this actually came out in 2023), A Quiet Place: Day One... I saw a bunch of stuff, most if it is stuff I don't have a need to see again.

I wouldn't say it's a lose in passion in wanting to collect movies for me. It's more or less that movies, amongst other things, are becoming too expensive. I am forced to buy less or a lesser format because prices of everything are just too high. So, I am now sticking to only buying what I really want and what I know I'll watch more than once. Blind buying or buying movies I dont like to complete a collection is at an all time low for me.

@@LordDementus1987 se7en is one that comes to mind. Don't even get the Blu Ray 7.1 audio. We get the original dvd release of 5.1. I think Zodiac is a bit of a let down too. James Cameron gets way to much flack for his 4k releases, as I agree the Terminator and The Abyss look great. I also think Aliens is one of the best 4k releases too. Sharp, detailed, and color fixes.

@@DrakonR I looked over some comparisons with SE7EN. I see there were some justified AI changes done. But it looks lightly DNR'd to me, unless that's just how it comes through over KZbin with the screenshots. They changed the colors a bit here and there. But I heard that the audio was remastered and most of the action is pushed to the front. So it seems like it was a downgrade compared to the DVD which had DTS-ES 6.1 or the Blu-ray which I think had DTS-HD MA 7.1. I never looked at Zodiac because it is just the theatrical cut. I've had the Director's Cut Blu-ray for years and am happy with it. Terminator and The Abyss probably could have been better, but I am happy with them. They're enjoyable and I can get rid of that old 4:3 widescreen DVD finally.

ALL collectors reach this epiphany at some point...I have. You just don't have the passion you once did, mixed with completing something that is no longer fun and you want to sell it all. It's normal, every collector gets here. also, 2024 as well as some recent years, movies aren't really good anymore. Very rare is there a great film or show that comes out, Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and creativity is lost. Most movies are cash grabs or nostalgia-bait. It's only obvious movie collecting is slowly dying out.
