Oh boy....WHY did I have to see this video???? Now I want to start ANOTHER new craft!!!!!! I just finished a rag rug on my rigid heddle loom, and years ago my husband made me a twinning loom. I must have an obsession with rag rugs😜 Just recently I threw out a huge bag of tshirts.....what was I thinking???? I do have lots and lots of fabric, as well as sheets....but you said sheets didn’t work as well for this rug braiding. Ugh. I will reach out to friends and family and ask for used unwanted tshirts and see if I can gather enough of them to make one of your rugs. Thank you for your well instructed videos👍👍

Thank you so much for reviving this--in the early 1950s I remember my mother making endless rag rugs--she used large safety pins (which I'd forgotten until watching your video). If there isn't a set of extra hands around to help at the beginning stages, simply pinning down the strips to a stationary cushion, such as the arm of a sofa, using a T-pin or hat pin, works just great.

You can actually start it with a slit in the first three pieces as you make when adding length to each color. Make the slit, stack the pieces and feed the ends back through. This is working great for me. When I added in the fourth piece is did a slit in the side of one of my other pieces already in the braid and do the same thing. Mine doesn't show at all and it keeps me from having to sew anything.

You have to email me at ragrugsbyerin@gmail.com I am copying my answer to your question in case you did not get my reply for some reason and get this one. +Judy McElwee I do not know if the flannel will stretch enough to make the braid-in rug. Perhaps if you cut it on the bias. It would need to be washed and dried a couple times first. I would not make my first braid-in rug with the flannel. Perhaps after you have made one first with t-shirt, nylon or polyester first. I only know how to make an oval braid-in rug. I crochet squares and rectangle rugs. Good luck.

@RagRugsbyErin Жыл бұрын
Those were probably 1.5 " I now prefer 2 - 3 inches.
@donnasouthwood8 жыл бұрын
In part one, when you completed going under over under you then threaded into the rug by going UNDER the stitch on the rug and ending up with the yarn coming up from the rug. In this version you go under over under and then thread it into the rug by going down into the stitch and coming out on the underside of the stitch on the rug. Why? Does it matter? I would think it would completely change the look and structure.
@RagRugsbyErin8 жыл бұрын
Following the same pattern would be the best approach.
@donnasouthwood8 жыл бұрын
The same pattern as what? Part one where you go under the stitch in the rug? Or part 3 where you go over the stitch in the rug? I'd like to try this but I'm confused that you did it different, I was just wondering why. I guess it's just preference? Also I noticed that when you did your starting braid you braid by crossing the strands under, whereas most people braid by crossing the strands over, so I guess that would effect it too. I'll just have to experiment. But this is a great starting place. Thanks for sharing.

Can you use double knit polyester on any of your rag rugs? Got a lot that was given to me and want to put it to good use :).
@RagRugsbyErin8 жыл бұрын
+Center Point Coaching I think the double knit polyester would work very well on any of the rugs. The braid-in rug will need material that has give like the polyester. On the crochet rugs: The disadvantage to using a polyester is they will not wash as well as sheets. When I say wash as well I mean polyester does not release dirt and stains as well as sheet usually would. It would depend on the use and traffic area of the rug. I like to use and recycle things that I have acquired cheap or even for free so I would say give it a try. I hope that has helped a bit. Let me know how it goes if time permits.

It is extemely varied and it depends on the workmanship and the market you are trying to sell to. Etsy and ebay might be good places to get some ideas from. I think it is a guessing game. Sorry I don't have more exact info on that. Googling rag rugs will bring you to some websites as well.

Just discovered you videos and love them! I have lots of felted, recycled wool - yardage. Have you ever made a crocheted rag rug from wool and/or do you recommend this? Should the strips be narrow for a project like this? I'm worried that it will be too heavy. What do you think? Thank you!
@RagRugsbyErin8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the note. On the braid-in rug you might be able to use the wool. I know absolutely nothing about felt though. On the crochet rug maybe. I use almost exclusively sheets. You might want to view my denim rug because that is much thinker material like wool. You would want to use a larger hook (Q or larger) I would think. This is the link to the denim video if you would like to take a look. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGfXXp6lgJyFrtU Also if you go to my Playlist on my KZbin channel and look in the playlist call Rag Rug Information and Help Videos, there are several videos there that might give you a better feel of how to handle it. Hi Erin! I'm making rugs to keep me occupied during Quarantine. I only have two pins and no tapestry needles. Is there anything else I could use?
@RagRugsbyErin4 жыл бұрын
Maybe a barrettes, clothes pins, push it through with your fingers. I hope that helps 😊. Stay safe.

Can you do this with a round rug too?
@RagRugsbyErin4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Just make the beginning braid short and curl it around on itself making sure to add enough extra stitches.

Want to make a braided rug 8x5ft how many follow pillows or jelly rolls would I need?
@RagRugsbyErin5 жыл бұрын
I do not make rugs with pillows or jelly rolls so I do not know. I also suggest you make your first braid-in rag rug with stretchy material like I talk about in the tutorial. Like t-shirts. You should watch my 5 strand rectangle braid-in rag rug tutorial. This tutorials show more close ups and details about adding extra stitches as you go around the curves.

Love this, but would like to make a round rug instead of oval as yours. Can you address?
@RagRugsbyErin8 жыл бұрын
+Chuck McCammon At the moment, my best suggestion would be only braid a very short distance on the initial braid and then add the 4th strand. It would still be slightly oval but not near as much. I will put that on my list of videos to make once I have worked out the details. I have about 8 other videso in the works at the moment, but I will certainly try my best to make that video. Thank you for viewing and sharing. Update if you try one yourself.

this is ingenious! I remember the braided rugs we had at our farmhouse, they were sewn together and were constantly coming apart. Thank you for posting this! * may I inquire: how do you suggest washing them? ...I would assume they'd be too bulky to go into a washing machine...?
@RagRugsbyErin2 жыл бұрын
Most of the time I wash them in the machine on gentle. I usually lay them out in the sun to dry. If they are to bulky in the bath tub.

I have made a braided rug in the past and found some old cast iron Irons at an antique store and the weight of them held my rug down and it was fun to look at as I worked on this project. 🇨🇦

What range of lengths do you use in your strands? In other words, what is the shortest and the longest I can feasibly use?
@RagRugsbyErin4 жыл бұрын
The shortest is up to you. The longest is based up how long you are will to continually pull through or deal with it get tangled with the other strands. Each person will find their groove.

In part 1 you went the opposite way when attaching to rug. This time you attached from behind the stitch. Is that correct?

@@RagRugsbyErin Thanks. REally appreciate the quick response! I have viewed ALL of your videos and I am dreaming "over under over"!! But I am trying to make more oval or round rug vs. rectangle, so not clear on how often or where to expand the exterior, if that makes sense.

It was a struggle for me too. You probably are not adding enough extra stitches as you go around the curves. Watch my 5 strand braid-in rectangle rug. It has a lot more close up and more details. I think it will help 😊

is there a way to make it circular with using that same technique but not crotcheting it?
@RagRugsbyErin7 жыл бұрын
+Kacy McManus I see them and I have an idea in my head, however I have not tested my idea. I am prototyping a rectangle braid-in rug right now. For a circle, I would make a short braid and bend it into a circle and then follow my general technique. I will work on a circle braid-in and make a video.
@kacymcmanus88157 жыл бұрын
i was thinking that too, but was worried about the starting point, i didnt want it to be a big knot. so excited to try it out, i have been cutting up so many tshirts!

Erin - I can't wait to get started! Thanks for such a great tutorial. I do have one question - can these be easily made into circle rugs and not just the oval shape?
@RagRugsbyErin4 жыл бұрын
You can make it a circle by turning the initial braid to meet the other end of the braid and start the braiding into itself. I suggest you watch my 5 strand rectangle braid-in rag rug tutorial it shows more close ups and details about adding extra stitches as you go around the curves. Have fun.

I am not sure what you mean by wrap twice but you go in the same more than once sometimes when you go around the arches. Does that make sense?

@RagRugsbyErin6 жыл бұрын
It is possible however I have not done well with material that does not have enough give. I would practice with t-shirt yarn first.
