When Kate said: I've waited so long for you. It was because she made it off the island and lived an entire life without Jack. She waited decades to live and die to see him again. It was probably my favorite part of the finale.

It was so lovely. The love those two had for each other was gorgeous, I remember thinking how unbelievable the chemistry was between those two actors form the very first episode on so to hear her say that and the way she said it was just lovely 🤍

Ya I assume why it took then all different times to remember eachother was because they couldn't remember untill they died. Hugo might have been there on the island for decades before he died, Jacob did it for hundreds of yrs maybe longer

@deeobrien5417 LOL I guess it's impressive that the writers were so easily able to con viewers into thinking Kate "waited" and had feelings for Jack despite the majority of the show proving otherwise. But, Sawyer wasn't an option, and we couldn't have Kate and Jack go alone, so....

@@nathanhawee5373One of the best theories I've heard is that everyone in this show's version of purgatory perceives the people they love as how they remembered them in life. For instance, Jack never got to see baby Aaron grow up, so it makes sense that he would perceive him as a baby when he meets his soulmates in that church. Everyone on the island has their own perceptions and versions of this church moment, but we get to experience Jack's because we actually see him die. Same with Charlie. In theory though, after Clare dies, she probably would've seen all her island soulmates as well as a grown up Aaron, but that's pure speculation and left up to us. It's one of the reasons I love the ending - it leaves just enough room for interpretation while giving us closure at the same time.

@@DavidBourne-bu3xh I'm referring to what/who the other survivors might have seen after they died or what their version of the church would've been. There are lots of clues to give us answers but they also left just enough breadcrumbs for us to use our imaginations.

At work there was a bunch of us who would gather the next morning over coffee and dissect the episode from the night before. In the last 14 years I’ve argued with so many people about what the ending was that just don’t get it, so thank you for explaining it correctly finally! Also, the showrunners have said that this is ultimately JACK's story. That is why some of the mysteries didn't get answered because they were not relevant to his story.

Ryan I need to thank you for making this video. You had me thinking about LOST again, when it was mentioned in the recent ACOLYTE you made, and how that show affected my life and my friends lives and is pretty much responsible for my kids existing. I had a group of 20 to 30 friends who would get together weekly for each new episode of LOST and we did this for 4 years. Anyway I personally really liked the ending of the show even if half the people in my group didn't. They mostly wanted answers to everything and I would always say that it is the journey not the destination that matters and that any answers they got probably wouldn't be as good as they answers we came up with together in our heads. The producers even released that deleted scene with Hurly, Mike, and Walt visiting the Dharma station in the real world saying something similar about getting answers. I really hope everyone who had a problem with LOSTs ending watches your video cause it will definitely help them understand better.

The line when Jack's father says you built this place to help you all 'remember' is one of the most powerful pieces of writing I've come across in media, because it teaches through our current version of storytelling what many spiritual books and teachers have talked about since we first asked the question 'why are we here?'. Every spiritual teaching I've come across in some way talks about the purpose of life being to remember who or what you really are. If we are to believe we are all spirit having a human experience, which at birth requires us to 'forget' who are so we can truly live the experience of being human, that to me is the best explanation for existence I've come across. Lost ultimately left us with this message. They all came together, lived, loved, lost, fully experienced physical existence, eventually all died at different times and places, then moved on, remembering what they really are. This moment of remembering at death must be truly incredible. To finally know what you might feel or intuit in life, that stories like Lost allude to, would be the most wonderful experience of them all. I for one like to look at death this way, it makes it seem like an amazing transition and expansion of awareness.

One of the most misunderstood series finales of all time... And one one of the best. It gives closure to all its characters and wraps its story up in a such a poignant way that it makes you reflect on the entirety of the story. I'm so glad ScreenCrush finally made a video about it. And I don't mean to advertise someone else's channel on this one but if you're looking for a deeper insight that strengthens the messages of this video, check out LOST Explained. That dude does a six part mini docu-series that goes deep into everything on the show, from the island's origins, to the symbolism of the numbers, to the reasons these particular people were selected, and yes, to even the ending. The ending of that made me cry and reflect just as much as the show did. Anyway, great job ScreenCrush. You nailed the ending. I spent the better part of 15 years being pissed off at this series and it’s ending. The last few weeks I decided to rewatch it and finally finished it tonight. INCREDIBLY different perspective the second time around!! I think there has to be significant consideration made for the old “week to week” version of shows versus modern binge watching. So much of the detail in this show got lost (pun intended), overlooked, and/or forgotten week to week, season to season. When you can watch separate episodes in a shorter time frame, those details stay fresh on your mind and give the narrative much more color. If you loved Lost when it was on the air but hated the ending…I highly encourage you to rewatch it!

I do think that the 1 episode per week format was great if you were super into the show, rewatching each episode, chatting on message boards and listening to the podcasts. It gave you time to process what was going on and catch things you missed when you watched it the first time. I can see how if you were a casual watcher of the show every week that it would be super easy to have missed a lot, or as you say forgot things from week to week. I was in the super obsessed category, lol. So when the finale came I was like, "I can't believe people didn't GET THAT!!"

Thank you for this, Ryan. LOST was a seminal show for me it first aired and I was initially disappointed with its final. Your breakdown really helped me recontextualize what was going throughout the last season. Such a great show. Truly the beginning of weekly tv programming that warranted in- depth analysis. I'd personally love for a channel to go back and break the series down in its entirety.

wow, a blast from the past! Lost was a great series and like you said very misunderstood. Everyone was so hyper-focused on the island's secrets that they forgot it was about the character's journey.

That's because the show kept on throwing secrets and mysteries at the viewers left, right and centre. It was a very frustrating show to watch. And don't get me started on characters who were abruptly killed off without any real explanation to what their purpose was.

Look I love Lost. But Hurley was the new protector why was he at the church and through the end scene with the bright light?
@troubleondemand7703

"We all go sometime kiddo. Some before you, some a long time after". Hurley and Ben ran the island for years hence the "You were a real good #2. And you were a great #1 Hugo" exchange between Hurley & Ben at the church in the finale. In the epilogue (a short video on the DVD of season 6 that's on youtube) Hurley and Ben go and get Walt from the asylum to help his dad (Michael, who is stuck as a whisperer) and presumably to be the new protector to eventually replace Hurley. So Hurley lived a long life and then handed off the protector reins when he was ready.
