The character still appears in updated versions, usually called the Phantom Rider now. I wrote a story for Marvel Comics Presents when I worked at Marvel using the version of Phantom Rider named "Hamilton Slade" (presumably a nod to Harrison Ford, with the intent to make him sort of an Indiana Jones-type hero).

I had this idea that if Phantom Rider was ever reintroduced in the comics, or some other media, that he could have a new design element where in the light, he would have his normal white outfit, but in the dark, he would look like the modern Ghost Rider. So he would have a flaming skull, body, and whip. Instead of him actually being on fire, it would be glow in the dark paint that is invisible in broad daylight. Say he was chasing a train on his horse, he would just look like the Phantom Rider, but once they went through a tunnel, it would reveal his "Ghost Rider" look. This would only happened if he did not possess the "Spirit of Vengeance."

The John Blaze Ghost Rider's look was similar to that of the Marvel Golden Age character The Blazing Skull. The Blazing Skull (Mark Anthony Todd) had mostly different. Yet some similar powers. Immortality, superhuman strength , immune to fire, able to shoot fire from his hands, and repair himself from almost any type of injury. He also had a sardonic and bizarre sense of humor. The Blazing Skull still has a obvious connection to the Ghost Rider Mythos.

The Ghost Rider was easy to draw . I contacted Gary Fredrich on Utube about the Ghost Rider and why wasn't it available in Marvel Masterworks , he said cuz of a bad rift between him and Lee prevented him from publishing it .
@FizzFop12 жыл бұрын
I think Lee was jealous of Fredrich to some degree. In the mid 60s, he won awards for his writing...and some of those awards came outside of the comics industry. It's a guess on my part, but I think that added to the friction between them.

One sad chapter in the saga of the Ghost Rider occurred in the pages of the WCA (West Coast Avengers) when they travelled back in time to his era. Well done! Vey well researched. Marvel western Ghost Rider was a favorite of my early years of comic book reading. You forgot to mention that, after it's seven issues 1967 run, Ghost Rider's adventures continued in Marvel's 1970 anthology series Western Gunfighters for 7 more issues. Thank you for making this. Subscribed.
@FizzFop18 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Rangersly!!! I wasn't aware of the Western Gunfighters series...I will have to take a look at them sometime!
@Rangersly8 жыл бұрын
WESTERN GUNFIGHTERS was an anthology western that ran for 33 issues. The early issues had new stuff mixt in with short filler reprints. Aside from continuing Ghost Rider after his own title was cancelled, the new series were Gunhawk (the first story was scripted by Jerry Siegel!), Renegades, Tales from Fort Rango, the Outcast (introduced in issue #3 with art by Barry Smith!). Aside from Ghost Rider and Gunhawk, I don't think that none of these new series lasted for more than an issue or two. Maybe they were just tryouts to test new concepts? By issue # 8 WESTERN GUNFIGHTERS would become an all reprints anthology just like it's older brother series MIGHTY MARVEL WESTERN. Still, these series are very enjoyable as they are the cheapest way to read Atlas era westerns drawn by great artists like Jack Kirby of course, but also rare Gene Colan, Al Williamson, Matt Baker, John Romita, Joe Maneely, John Severin, and lots more.
@FizzFop18 жыл бұрын
I love those old Atlas books...they are awesome! Funny you mention Atlas...The next Lost Hero is going to talk a little about Atlas. The very first comic books I had were a three pack of cover-less Marvel Westerns...I remember Kid Colt and a character called the Black Rider, but I have no idea what titles they were.
@Rangersly8 жыл бұрын
Wow! We have gone almost full circle! Reprints of the Black Rider actually replaced Ghost Rider on WESTERN GUNFIGHTERS starting with issue # 8! Kid Colt was one of Atlas/Marvel longuest running title for a while, with more than 200 issues and a series that ran from the late 40's to the late 70's. I collect old westerns in general. I wish I could afford more Atlas era because of the great artists they had on them: Doug Wildey on OUTLAW KID, John Romita on WESTERN KID, Jack Keller on KID COLT, Joe Maneely, John Severin, Russ Heath, Jack Kirby, etc. And I am so disappointed that, when Marvel were doing those cool Atlas Era Masterworks volumes, they didn't do any, not one single volume of any western characters, If you need any help researching western characters, I'll be happy to lend a hand.
@FizzFop18 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I might take you up on that. Maybe I'll do a western hero episode. Maybe do a top 10 best western heroes of the golden age. I have a handful of Westerns in my collection. I think I have a couple of Atlas Wyatt Earps'. Strikes me that they have some awesome Jack Davis art in them. I have some Magazine Enterprise Ghost Riders and a couple of Dells...I think that's about it...I know websites like Comic Book Plus and Digital Comic Book Museum have complete scans of a lot of the public domain western title from the defunct publishers (Magazine Enterprises, Dell, Fawcett). You should check them out sometime.

And it just hit me...what a powerful impression it must've made to listen to the one & then see the other. It's much too bad that the makers of the Ghost Rider movie(s) with Nicholas Cage didn't follow that formula.
