You make him like The Question when he has the costume on and a spoiled good for nothing the rest of the time, Cynthia is already perfect as the co-star, make him battle mobsters and defend/work on an indipendent online newspaper. Spice it up with some drama and an ironic look on the other heroes in their universe, this writes itself!

Awesome retrospective. You gotta love the Golden Age, the era that says "what the hell is this continuity thing anyway". In a weird way, this feels like a step for equality with the inclusion of Cynthia Blake, who is by far the most competent character in this all-too-brief series. I'm guessing that the creators chose the name "Daily Express" as a generic newspaper name, but this is actually the name of a genuine British newspaper that is still being published to this day.

As a fan of the Green Hornet, I always liked copy's of him, so the Press Guardian was a fun one (taken with a Golden Age grain of salt). I hadn't realized (or had forgotten) the Falcon was suppose to be the same guy. What a costume downgrade and upgrade at the exact same time (and off panel/between issues to boot). When I first read the the title of this video I misrecalled who he was; there was another Golden Age Green Hornet ripoff whose eye mask was made from actual folded newspapers each time, but I can never find anything on him. Anyone know his name? Another fun and informative video. Thanks. And congrats on the new comic! PS: You had me at Hooded Cobra Commander; great guy, great channel.

I think what would be interesting is a series that goes through Golden Age comics in public domain, and talks about which ones are actually good and worth reading, like a review series. The rationale being, is that literally anyone can read them for free, so if you find the good ones, literally anybody could experience them legally. For example, I am personally very fond of Black Terror comics, easily one of the best comics in the Golden Age and it's a shame the hero is almost completely forgotten now. Also classic Fawcett Captain Marvel comics are now in public domain (even if DC has the right to the character itself), so that's also a good read.

Marvel had a character called The Falcon in the Golden Age who wore a grey suit with red Captain America wings. He was similar to the Purple Mask in that he was a DA who became a violent vigilante by night. The Purple Mask, or course, originated as The Laughing Mask, who murdered criminals with no mercy. Some people have tried to claim that The Falcon is the same character. but he had a different civilian identity, whereas the Laughing Mask and the Purple Mask had the same civilian identity, name and all. The initial image looks an awful lot like Marvel's The Phantom Reporter, who had two civilian identities.

I always DO love your vídeos on Golden Age comics. In fact, I watched them all again while I was in bed for company. And I like them much more when they are at least 20 min. long. A couple of suggestions: -Videos on the characters of Captain Atom, Firestorm and Phantom Stranger. -A video about the popularity of comics in the Golden Age and discussing the multiples imprints. -This is a cuestión I have always had: Why there was so much content back then for a single 10 cents comic? ...and, on the same topic, how or when it ended up changing in the Modern Age when, usually, a single issue read is around 10 minutes or so. Greetings from a Puerto Rican living in Spain.

The Three Stooges short 'You Natzy Spy,' which used Moronica as a stand in for WW II Germany, came out in 1940, the same year that Pep Comics #1 came out: I bet the writers of the Press Guardian based the Moronia bund on that.
@KasumiKenshirou Жыл бұрын
And at this time, American most movie studios actually would not allow their filmmakers to mock Hitler or make anti Hitler content. Apparently they just weren't paying attention to The Three Stooges who just did it anyway. I heard recently that Hitler had The Stooges and Charlie Chaplin on a "kill list", but I'm not sure if that is true or not.

It made those trips to the grocery store incredibly exciting, because every few weeks I could drop a little of my allowance on a stunning, mesmerizing story that threatened to change everything about one of my favorite characters. @davidmcmahon4633 Жыл бұрын
Probably the reason he wasn't called the Falcon most of the time but the Press Guardian was most likely due to there already being a Falcon character. Two of them actually, written stories, and then a movie series. Monrovia for a reoccurring villain/country appeared in numerous stories in MLJ comics. The Shield and the Wizard both went up against them. Not sure how many other MLJ heroes did as well. Obviously, they were a thinly disguised Nazi Germany since these were written before we got into the war. Speaking of MLJ, do the Fox. Guy works as a freelance photographer for the Daily Bugle and puts his camera in his costume. Hmmm ... where have I heard of this idea before?
@MWGallaher Жыл бұрын
You're almost certainly correct: they had prepared a new feature called "The Falcon" and then realized at the last minute that it might get them in trouble, so they overlaid "The Press Guardian" over the splash and modified a few captions. (If they had come up with a shorter name they probably would have pasted over every instance of "Falcon" instead.)
