Very little said so much information given. That’s the best advice video I’ve watched for a life threatening situation. I will store this in my mental toolbox 👍🏻

When using a compass bearing with a map you also need to account for the discrepancy between true north and magnetic north which could be >25 degrees in some places e.g. New Zealand. I would wonder about losing your pole if the conditions were actually bad enough once you walked away from it?

The “blue northing lines on the map” at 2:25 are actually eastings. An easy miscommunication and I often have to think hard to select the right terminology. A very good video. Thank you.

I prefer to call them North to South grid lines to avoid confusion.

Maybe "... north-running lines..." would work.

Great advice. On some compasses, like the suunto m.2 you can also measure slope angle. There is a guide to check this against a maps contour lines on the side of the compass.

Had a friend who knew someone who got lost in a white out when he was climbing on of the 7000m peaks. He walked onto a snow cornice on the edge of a cliff, the cornice gave way and he plunged to his death.

This happened to me while backcountry in Asahidake, Hokkaido last month. Got panicked and waited for 2 hours for the weather to become clear again.
