Join us on Adventures into History as we embark on a thrilling quest deep into "The Hills" of Talbot County, Georgia. Alongside Dan the Historian and Cecil Young, we set out to uncover the long-lost cemetery of the Hollis Plantation, navigating through miles of ancient roads and untamed wilderness that now marks what was once a vibrant plantation.
This journey is not just a behind-the-scenes glimpse but a full-fledged adventure, where every step taken on the old road brings us closer to piecing together fragments of a forgotten past. As the sun sets and darkness envelops "The Hills," our search becomes even more intense. The eerie howls of coyotes in the distance signal that we are not alone, adding a layer of suspense to our nocturnal expedition.
Despite our efforts, the cemetery remains elusive by the end of this video, but the adventure itself uncovers the stunning natural beauty and remnants of history scattered throughout this secluded area. The story doesn't end here; Cecil's determination leads to the discovery of the cemetery the following morning, promising a future episode dedicated to exploring this significant find.
Tune into Adventures into History for this remarkable journey through time and nature, as we continue our quest to unearth the stories hidden within Georgia's landscapes. Our search for the Hollis Cemetery is a testament to the mysteries that await us and the relentless pursuit of history's secrets.

Mildred Pierce, wife of Emmitt Pierce who was the brother of Willie Pierce who was my grandpa, the father of my mother Doris Pierce Davis. Thanks to Robert and Dan for your adventures that reference my family. I used to see those folks at the yearly Pierce reunions at the Crowell Communty out from Reynolds Ga. A number of the Pierce relatives are buried in the Crowell Cemetery including Willie and Florine Cosey Pierce( my grandparents).

12:15 "What kind of tree is this?" Dan was right. That's an American Beech. That's the kind of tree that people have been carving their initials in the bark of since before my time. As the tree grows, the carved letters expand. The frogs heard in this video are chorus frogs of some sort. We have New Jersey Chorus frogs, which sound similar. When Dan was telling his story around the 23 minute mark, I thought the punchline was going to be that it was a funeral procession. Those coyotes are cool! I recognized that sound, because we have them too, though I haven't heard them since late summer. I can't wait to see that cemetery. Glad Cecil found it the next day.

These videos are fact finding and just plain fun to watch. When I heard the frogs my first thought was snakes will be out and about looking for food. Near water I would expect to find snakes hunting for food. Possibly Insidious poisonous vipers cottonmouth, rattlesnakes and copperhead. I found those serpents almost exclusively around fresh water creeks and springs day or night.

Robert, I would not totally rule google earth. I am a forester and have worked with aerial photos for work. Yes, there is tree cover, but sometimes you can pick up things like a trace of an old road, a clearing where maybe an old homestead was. If you look really closely sometimes you can pick out trees that are taller than the others, maybe your old dead oaks or cedars. You probably already know all of this because you're a pretty smart guy, but on the outside chance....

@@JohnMarciaShackelford Really? Is there a reason for that? (Never heard this before, but maybe bc I’m born & raised AK/PNW-our cedar & birch are totally different species from those in GA…maybe ours adapt differently or have different growth patterns? Idk).
@JohnMarciaShackelford
@JohnMarciaShackelford 3 ай бұрын
@bijoulille8816 well, believe it or not I am from the NW too! Washington. Yes, Georgia's cedars looks really different than Alaska red, red cedar, yellow cedar. I think I heard them say cedars were quite often planted in and around cemeteries (in Georgia) because they are suppose to symbolize eternal life. The oaks, I'm not sure why, but they are a lot of the time associated with an old homestead and family cemeteries.

Reminded me of when I'd got mountain biking with my headlamp at night in the forest that backs onto our place, was always way creepier at night and we haven't got coyotes! I know with the logging every time they harvest they seem to end up changing the roads and cutting through old roads so it gets hard to see what was once there. That was a very cool video, Robert, Dan, and Cecil! I felt like I was walking right there with y'all! That story that Dan told about the group of folks in the black robes was rather disturbing. Especially since all those pricey vehicles were parked around. I'm thinking that was a group of folks that I am glad to had no part of! But, at least they were black robes, not white ones!! I was expecting that when he started with the story! Walking back in there in the dark would have been one creepy feeling, especially when the yotes started yapping. I wonder just how far away the Pigman was? Probably not far behind you...😂. Now, I look forward to your return back in there to see the cemetery. I grew up in the Ozark hills of northwest Arkansas and know from experience what just might be watching from behind a big tree or rock outcropping. It was great fun back in my younger days!

I've been living in the woods of the Ozarks in NW Arkansas for 57 years and yes there are "things" here. I've lived among panthers and bobcats and bears and some paranormal stuff too. I'm living at the edge of town now, but there is a pasture across the street and one behind me and next to the one behind me is a large wooded hill. I've had jaguar, lynx, and bobcats in my backyard and the other night there was a bobcat in the front yard. I've never been threatened by any of these animals. I leave them alone and they leave me alone.
