Lost in Light, a short film on how light pollution affects the view of the night skies. Shot mostly in California, the movie shows how the view gets progressively better as you move away from the lights. Finding locations to shoot at every level of light pollution was a challenge and getting to the darkest skies with no light pollution was a journey in itself. Here’s why I think we should care more.
The night skies remind us of our place in the Universe. Imagine if we lived under skies full of stars. That reminder we are a tiny part of this cosmos, the awe and a special connection with this remarkable world would make us much better beings - more thoughtful, inquisitive, empathetic, kind and caring. Imagine kids growing up passionate about astronomy looking for answers and how advanced humankind would be, how connected and caring we’d feel with one another, how noble and adventurous we’d be. How compassionate with fellow species on Earth and how one with Nature we’d feel. Imagine a world where happiness of the soul is more beautiful. Ah, I feel so close to inner peace. I can only wonder how my and millions of other lives would have changed.
But in reality, most of us live under heavily light polluted skies and some have never even seen the Milky Way. We take the skies for granted and are rather lost in our busy lives without much care for the view of the stars.
How does light pollution affect the night skies and quite possibly our lives?

Thank you- I am a member of the International Dark Sky Association in Mass and our town in the Berkshires are trying to get a by-law adopted to protect the dark sky.

Its so freaking wild that even going down from a class 8 to class 7 shows a (relatively) huge difference in the visibility of the night sky.

If you look up at a blue sky during the day, you can see the humidity increasing week by week..... It is this humidity, which is reducing the amount of Light reaching the Earth's surface at night, and the light from Cities is also illuminating this increasing humidity, more and more.

Remarkable motivation. Shree ram..you explained about polution caused by light refraction.. light is caused by human aggression against nature....is mostly cleared by your counseling

Is that real? Can we actually see the entire galaxy before our eyes like that without some form of editing? Or is it all edited to be that vivid? Man if i can go to deathvalley and see that exact same night sky i would cry

This is only half of a summer Sagittarius arm! Now In winter it's much thinner and wispy and comes from our own backyard ...in the Orion Spur-arm.

No, these are exposures, you wouldn't actually see this level of detail. I think videos like these are pretty misleading.

What the experts are not telling you: It's NOT just Light, that is causing this phenomenon on its own, but rather the ROOT CAUSE, is in the build up of humidity below 40,000 feet which varies from day to day. This is being illuminated by the light from our cities. The increase in humidity, also reduces the level of light coming in from the universe (stars). WARNING: As oceanic and land temperatures increase, there is more and more evaporation taking place as temperatures increase. If this phenomenon continues, in the near future, we won't be able to see any stars, and the daylight will reduce to the point where sunlight will no longer reach the Earth's surface, being blocked out by the increased humidity in our atmosphere. Can we do anything to prevent this? NO.....
