The space family Robinson is on a journey to Alpha Prime in the hopes of establishing a colony there and thereby saving humanity from extinction. Their plans are foiled by the evil Dr. Smith (Gary Oldman) and they find themselves curiously enough, lost in space.

Hyperdrive. The movie explains that the hypergates allow for reliable only between other gates. Their mission was to build a gate at a suitable planet so others could colonize it.

She hasn't got enough thrust. Yes. It was designed this way. And, given that your commander is a PHYSICIST and ENGINEER, he knows it too. He knows the gravitational pull of the sun as well and that the ship's engines could never possibly break free. So why all the drama?

They were trying to leverage the sun's gravity well to break out at an angle into free space. But they'd already gone too close to change their trajectory using the conventional engines alone.
