Lost in the forest South West Tasmania, stumbling onto an amazing road to ride a motorbike S1-E8

I continue the ride into the south west corner of Tasmania exploring the Styx tall tree reserve looking for the giant 90m plus trees. Then head as far west as I can go to the end of the road.

Hey Joe… loving your videos! I’m binging watching all of your play lists to pass the time on my indoor cycle trainer. Other note on this video… I’m a Canadian and an environmental professional… I agree, this does remind me of a particular area in Canada, but a relatively small part of the province of British Columbia. I wish all of Canada looked like this… unfortunately, I live on the flat, bald, boring prairie! Environmentalists is a terrible word… haha… there is a whole field of very diverse environmental science professionals that support environmentally responsible development… including forestry professionals. Environmentalists are just the extreme activists that chain themselves to trees etc. It makes me cringe ti be lumped in with that lot!

Some really beautiful landscape, I guess Tasmania is on my list now. I had a good laugh when you mentioned Google Maps! I have had the same issue here, but mostly in Mexican cities, I've been sent round and round by Maps. 🙄 Fortunately I have learned how to cope, well, mostly.... 🤣 I was looking at my back tire recently, and I think it's time. I'm having my second service done early at 5,000 plus miles at the RE dealership in Queretaro, so I figure a back tire is in order too.

Yes the only place is in the north near water where we have an animal that can over power you (crocodile). So forest are safe in that regards (just need common sense and bit of protection against things that bit snakes spiders etc...). I was in Canada once and came across an fresh steaming bear poop which was about 1 foot high while running in the woods about 20km deep into the forest, so I gathered it was a big bear, I was scared and ran like the wind out of there 🤣. oh strawberries are good too.

@@freewayproject yes forgot about the crocs, not to be messed with, the local bear population here is slowly increasing so less people go to the forest picking mushrooms and wild berries. I certainly wouldn't like to meet a bear, we have some really large moose which can be dangerous too 😬 but we must enjoy nature in our lives😎👍

Thanks for another great video. Great stills too. Those trees are amazing. You are right about people chaining themselves to the trees, they also laid in front of the machines and I vaguely remember one guy stayed high up in a tree for ages protesting against logging. This was a long time ago, maybe the '70's. It was huge news back in the day. 🤩

yes they are amazing trees at 90m, I am glad they were saved. Searching through that reserve was quite fun and easy trails. A lot more exploring still to come.

Thanks Gregory, yes it sits on 100km find. Sometimes if you load it up with a lot of weight and go up long steep hills it will drop off that speed. Really strong head winds can effect it to. But today I was having to roll off the throttle as I was going over 110kmph. So normal conditions 100km fine, but it can do 110kmph fine to

Hi Joe, As I've been watching your videos, you have put a lot of trust into that bike, and it starts up reliably every time. One of the issues with the REH in prior years has been the relays and sometimes spark plugs. Have you had to do any of that with this year's model that you have? I am very impressed with your filming and editing. The attention to detail hasn't been missed by me. I just bought a 2022 REH but also had back surgery so I'm relegated to watching other people do on KZbin, what I'm anxious to do for real, while this heals up. Thank you for sharing your adventures. For me it's a vicarious trip to a beautiful destination. Cheers

Hi mate. I got my bike second hand it had done about 2000km before I got it. I have not touched the bike at all except tires and chain due to normal wear and I have put over 20 000km on it. I have had no spark plug issue, no issue at all, and I put the bike through some hash stuff. Not sure if that is the same experience other people have had but for me it has not let me down in any way. I hope you heal soon and get out there on the road and trails as soon as possible.

Another great ride, l like to refer to it as being geographically misplaced, it happens to me all the time when l come to the blacktop from dirt always takes me ages to work out where l am. Hi christian, a rough idea of how far you can get if you are riding conservatively (not giving it full gas out of ever corner) is around 450km for the 15L tank. I have done it a couple times where I had done about 420km -430km and filled up again putting about 13.8L back into the take so about 1L left. Again if you have a lot of gear on the bike or you're pushing the bike then this will obviously drop. And yes great for a daily driver if you're just getting around, it has 21 front wheel so i't's not like a street bike were it is really dynamic and you're riding on a knifes edge. Hope that helps.

Me: Oh no he got lost in Australia? Let not the army of spiders surround him! 😅 When we hiked, we would leave little pink marker streamers on the spruce trees. That told us the way back. I was taught to count my paces and the angles I made with a click counter and a compass. We were taught how to use a sextant. We made camp at 3:30 because in the forest, it gets dark just like that. It's as if God switched the lights off. These days you have google maps, aye? 😊

Well one of the things in places like Australia is that there isn't cell service coverage in most of it, only where there is a population, so I only use google when in the main areas. I am now using GaiaGPS when getting remote as I don't want to take up peoples time to come search for me if I get really lost. I do also carry a EPB (Electronic Personal Beacon). So definitely not like the old days where they were real explorers, but the tech is there now so may as well use it.

@@freewayproject yes. Absolutely mate. There's something called a yellow brick in Australia. It connects with a satellite and sends your location to your loved ones every few hours or so. I don't know the exact details but worth having a look at mate. 🤗

my thoughts on the tree subject... they are magnificent. However, so are people, and in very similar ways. Very few people get to live to say 110. Of the very few that do it seems like "they just did" i.e. their life was not really different to others, they just managed to not die, by no effort of their own. Some very healthy people die young, some people who have a glass of whisky every day live till they are antient, others have a heart attack. I`m sure of those who have a LONG life, over their life, there was may a time they could have died/ been killed. But just like those huge trees, they just happened not to be "logged" by someone else, while all else around were.

Quick question regarding the Himi...how are you managing the relatively short service intervals!? It is a real concern for me, as I am weighing up my next bike purchase!

Hi RAD, I came from riding an KTM EXC-F enduro bike where it needs to be service every 15 hours, so the Himalayan service intervals seems long to me. I dropped into the KTM headquarter on my trip and they said as long as I am changing the oil and oil filter every 5000km, checking air filter etc... it will be fine, if you can do the basic stuff which is easy once you have done it once then it becomes a lot longer before you need to take it for a full service. They said I should take it in for the 25 000km service which I am just about there. Hope that helps.

Hi RdeRid, I had use it before when I put the destination in and if I lose signal it would still track to the location. But I always seem to explore down different tracks etc... so it says rerouting then gets stuck on that as I gather it needs signal to do that. Does what you suggest gets around that? or is it only to s specific location? Thanks for the help.
