Water towers are used to create water pressure in the mains going into each house. The weight of the water wanting to fall from the tower pressurizes all the neighborhood pipes and allows every home to receive pressurized water for taps and showers.

Yellow is considered one of the clearest colors to see in poor weather conditions. The stark black against the yellow only increases visibility. Also most of our street signs are Yellow, Red, White or Green because these are considered the most visible colors from a distance. Lines, words on the roads are typically Yellow or White as well for the same reason.

Before I saw this video, I honestly had no idea they didn’t have fire hydrants like ours in other parts of the world. It’s against the law to park in front of one. If you do and there’s a fire, it’s perfectly legal for firefighters to push your car out of the way with their fire engine or break out your windows so they can get the hose through to the hydrant.

Typically in the US you only have a Mailbox "metal tube" if you have a Driveway. Apartments, condoes, townhouses, in most cases utilize locked mailboxes located in one area where all residents can access their Post/Mail. Though UPS and FEDEX type services often leave packages at peoples doors in these situations and not at the 'locked mailbox hub". Unless a UPS/Fedex/Amazon package can fit in your Metal Tube, they will walk to your door and leave the package. Back in the day, when you might have to go a mile down a dirt road to get to many peoples houses, a Mailbox at the end of a driveway makes perfect sense. The amount of time it saves the Postman is enormous in more Rural areas.

There are all sorts in my area with is rural, farmtown Minnesota population about 3,500. I live in the country, woods behind my house down to a creekbed to the west, field across the road to the east. My mailbox is where the road because driveway (I live on a dead-end so the road kinda just dissolves when it gets to my property). But then in town, there's mailboxes at the end of driveways on street, it's usually newer homes that have a longer driveway, and do NOT have a separate like walkway up to the front door from the sidewalk. In fact there's not usually a sidewalk at all when it's like that. If there is, it's an older part of town and there's that walkway up to the front stoop, and usually there's like a letter box thing hanging right on the side of the house, like you can reach out the front door and grab your mail without having to put shoes on. Suffice it to say, it's all different ways here. In a little town like mine it's done every way. The letter slot in the door doesn't work here though, it's just too cold outside in the winter it would be impractical to have a hole like that.

Water towers are for water pressure using gravity. You can pump it full with a pretty simple small pump and provide a lot of water at pressure for peak use times which would otherwise require a large pump or multiple pumps to keep up with demand. It's sort of like a rechargeable battery but for water pressure. Think of something like a power plant, it has a maximum output, but the load required by the local town it's servicing might be several times higher than that output at peak times, so you have a big battery that the plant charges up during off times with enough power storage to handle the excess, and then the town can run off the battery.
@djjazzyjeff1232
@djjazzyjeff1232 2 жыл бұрын
They're extremely simple. I don't understand why we haven't used the similar physics concept with wind turbines. Because during peak energy usage there's usually no wind. When it's absurdly cold or ridiculously hot, the wind doesn't blow. Idk why we don't have a wind tower lift a weight or something like that and then lower in during peak hours or when there's no wind.
@ryandean3162
@ryandean3162 2 жыл бұрын
@@djjazzyjeff1232 We do. Solar too. They both are always paired with large battery banks. Same concept. Also more efficient than using a weight, because you have to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy back to mechanical energy to power whatever raises the weight, and then convert the weight's new potential energy into electrical again when you want to use it, which has an extra step or two compared to mechanical/kinetic->electrical->chemical potential->electrical.

@@ryandean3162 Really? I’ve never heard of that. One of the biggest gripes I’ve heard, mostly from my good friend’s father who has worked at the energy company for 20+ years is that you have to have equally as much fossil fuel capability as your green energy because when it’s peak use, often times, the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow. It makes sense, I’ve just never seen it. I bring up the weight thing because the major advantage to nuclear aside from how dense the energy is in the isotopes used, is that it’s inside, protected, and no matter what the conditions outside, you can create clean energy. I was just sort of thinking out loud about how to solve that part of the problem.

Water towers (having a pressure head due to their elevation) are used to add pressure to water supply pipelines when needed (when a pipe breaks for example and the water pressure drops), and provide a backup for fire fighters when they draw too much water from the pipes while fighting fires, also dropping the water pressure. The fire fighters connect to the pipelines at the fire hydrants, which are installed next to a buried valve on the pipe. They connect with a fire hose and open the valve to let the pressurized water flow through the hose. Every city and town with public water supply pipelines has these features. I know all about this crap from being a civil engineer working for a public water commission.

Water tanks are used to pressure the water. It’s just head pressure. It also acts like a surge tank. In NewYork City lots of apartments have their buildings. They get enough volume in a day but when everyone takes a shower in the morning they would run short of pressure and volume. Smaller towns water wells might run at 15 gallons an hour and at times they need 30. The tanks fill overnight in low usage times.

Water towers are used to store extra water to supplement flow through the community pipes when the normal supply doesn't meet the demand during peak usage hours. They are refilled when the demand drops -- at night, for example. The reason they are towers is because when being drawn upon, they use gravity to feed the water pipes. A large capacity electric pump is typically used to refill them. Most towns have one or two. Mine has four.

The water pumps into a water tower at a constant slow rate but can leave it at different rates and at different times as needed by a town. The towers are a specific height so gravity pressurizes the output water just right. they also have a super wide coverage area due to the siphon effect, so they're generally built on high hills to reduce the size that the tower needs to be. also putting them in the middle of nowhere is often because the land was cheap there. additionally the tank is oversized so if the pump fails it can be swapped out and not effect water availability and so fire trucks can have enough water to put out a fire.

Hi blokes, long time viewer and patreon here. Water towers exist as an expansion tank primarily, and as reserve water pressure should there be power failures with pumps secondarily. Since liquids cannot compress like a gas would flowing in pipes, when valves are slammed shut, the shock of the backpressure would turn the infrastructure into well... pipe bombs. Having a tower and expansion chamber for the pressure to go into prevents this. This fact also powers something INCREDIBLY cool called a "Ram Pump" -- I'd love to see you guys react to how a ram pump works, there are tons of informative videos, as well has IRL builds. Cheers,

That's not entirely right. It's pumped in slowly over the course of time, then it can make it so that every tap will have pressure even when opened at the same time, as usage increases substantially as people get home from work vs midday when there's not much usage at all. It's really an ingenious solution, as gravity and a large hopper does this better than any pump system ever could and WAY more efficiently.

Water towers are only to maintain a constant pressure. I would assume the same purpose in the UK. 19:05 We hardly have any telephone boxes at all. The few we have are more like stands. There is no enclosing box at all.

Mark 10:49. 1976 was our Bicentennial year, and at the time, we lived in Oklahoma City's, "Eastland Hills Mobile Home Park", and the lots were seperated by such fences, though we called them, "chain-linked fences". Our younger neighbor, Chris, had a dog bigger than he was. The dog was named, "Buffy", because as a German Shepherd, he lacked black fur. We had another neighbor named, "Roger Mosley", who eventually got killed in a car crash. But before that, he was intimidated by, Buffy. Whenever we walked by the dog, Roger, would say something. Well, one day, Buffy, made it over the fence, and knocked over a very scared, Roger, who wanted to tell like a ninny, but before he could, he began laughing hysterically, because Buffy's very wet tongue was tickling him! It seems that all along, Buffy, just wanted to make friends with us! So he did! The point of this anecdote, is that the guy is wrong about dogs not knowing how to get out! They just need the proper motivation! 🧐

Its much more efficient to have one pump pump water 60 ft in the air and then let gravity feed all the water to the town than having 100s of pumps that need to pump water to all the houses in the town. =)

Water towers are used to create pressure, instead of every single house needing a water pump, the town has one large pump that pumps water up to the tower and then gravity creates the pressure to deliver water to every house in the town.

I do not have a mailbox, I have a mail slot on my front door, and the mail just gets pushed through, and drops onto my floor. If I want them to take mail, I put it halfway through the slot, with the stamp showing, and they take it.

Most differences are explained with wide areas to cover and desire for security. A letter box in your door means that someone can access the interior of your home from the exterior for more cautious areas. A mail box by the road saves time to the mail man, and people who do not want visitors do not see people they do not know at their door.

Alot of people are kind of overexplaining how water towers work. This is what they are, A GRAVITY FED SIPHON. To start the siphon, you use small pump systems to slowly fill the tower. Then you open up the outflow, and the volume of water inside creates a siphon that is able to pull water out of the ground faster than it would otherwise. It's a cheaper way to pump water than relying on power at all times. The same physics that makes watertowers work makes people be able to steal gas out of cars, if that makes it any clearer.

But it is also used to pressurize the water system. Some areas with hills don't use towers, they have water tanks up on the hills to achieve the same goal.

1) There is at least one state--Vermont--that prohibits large billboards along the highways (motorways). Perhaps because of tourism, you will see many small signs for businesses along secondary roads. 2) Astonishingly, considering how concerned with safety we've become, most yellow buses do not have seatbelts. The federal government has no requirement, and only 6 six states do, although they likely "grandfathered in" all the old buses before the law became effective. 3) My 1950s house has a mailbox by the side door at the top of the driveway. Just 2 blocks away, there are newer houses with front yard mailboxes. Mailboxes affixed to the house seem to be rare for newer suburban houses, perhaps at the request of the U.S. Postal Service. 4) Receiving home delivery of a newspaper (or even reading a newspaper) has declined, but they are typically either thrown onto the driveway or yard, or placed into a second box beside the front yard mailbox. My 80-year-old mother tips the delivery person to place it inside her door, because she uses a walker. 5) I have a long-time neighbor who is a good person, but is an imbecile. One day he erected a small flagpole and for a day or two he hung both the American flag and the Confederate flag. Someone must have told him you shouldn't hang any other flag with the American flag, never mind the battle flag of an enemy army. 6) You were talking about the "Council" taking down UK flags. Every few years there is a story in the U.S. about some uptight Condo or Homeowners' Association, likely in a wealthy or retirement community, that strictly regulates outdoor decorations. Some extra-uptight busybody decides this includes the American flag. Letters are sent telling those with flags to remove them, who are sometimes military veterans or even lawyers. Lawsuits are filed and the busybodies lose. It's so stupid, and these little fascists never learn. 7) Occasionally you will see businesses or individuals flying unnecessarily large flags. I always wonder if they are "red flags" for people I shouldn't trust. As the English writer Samuel Johnson famously said in 1775, "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

New York State doesn't allow them in the Adirondacks. The Adirondack State Park in NY at 6.1 million acres is actually larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Great Smokies National Parks combined. It is written in to the New York Constitution that they are to remain "forever wild" thus any sort of development in and around the park is strictly regulated. One such regulation is ABSOLUTELY NO LARGE BILLBOARDS.

Water towers are used to keep water pressure up in city water systems. They are always the highest point of a municipal area. They use gravity so when you open the spicket, the water has pressure. Without them you need pumps which are.much more expensive.

Things movies get wrong about hydrants is in the north we have dry barrel hydrants which means u hit a hydrant no water coming out because pipe is below frost line and you would just snap pole to open water main. In the south they don't do this so you are more likely to see water gush when hitting a hydrant.

Office blokes This is hilarious. It is Main's water! Water pressure is determined by the height of the water column. By pumping water from the ground up into a tower, now everyone has good shower pressure at their house. Remember water finds a level. So if a building was taller than that water tower, you wouldn't even get water out of the spigot. That's why that tower has to be bigger than any of the homes or businesses, that it supplies

Reading this suddenly makes me wonder if it would only be for the British flag, or if they had the English one on their house would the council still come 'round and demand it be taken down as well. I think, could utterly be wrong, but the Scottish certainly seem to like their flag.

Mark 18:43. Those very large ones? If you know the story behind, "The Star-Spangled Banner", then you know the source of inspiration for that new, uh, "tradition"? 🤔. It occurs to me, that the layout of more than a few automobile dealerships, could be fort-like, back when forts were designed like, Fort McHenry. But that's where I see most of those type of huge flags, along the I-35 corridor, is at such businesses. 🤔. 🧐. 🇺🇸

Ya sometimes people fuck with mail boxes, but its mostly kids, I remember when I was a teenager one of my friends made a pipe bomb by tearing up fireworks and pouring the powder in a small pipe, he drilled a fuse into it and everything, He then lit it and put it in a person's mail box, like you said, the kind that is way in front of the house. I was there when he did it, I was telling him this sounds like a bad idea, but he had already made it, so he was going to use it. He lit it and we ran like hell, one of the scariest noises I'd ever heard. The cops eventually showed up because I'm sure that scared the shit out of people. At least no one got hurt, and all they had to do is replace the mail box, and they might have lost some letters.

I have a fire hydrant by my house, but the bad thing is it doesn't work, and a lot of them don't, when there was a fire, they had to bring in huge pools of water to use, they haven't worked for a long time, and god over the yrs I lived here there were about 3-4 fires around us...I think they keep them for people to feel safe, or just it would cost a lot to get rid of them!
