In Pennsylvania, especially in the winter, I always had emergency supplies in the car (mini van). Blankets, sleeping bags, extra clothes and socks, non-perishable food, water, flares, matches (and lighters), flashlights, first-aid kit and yes, spare tire and jack. Never needed it, but never regreted having it.

Me too. I grew up in the canadian prairies. I've been stuck on a ring road inside a city for 5 hrs with half a tank of gas with -45c with windchill and at some point you conserve gas and go get the blanket from the trunk. I got thumbs up from the dude beside me. Maybe id have let him cufdle if it fell night..im thankful it was an accident and not me in the wilderness.. These shows make me cringe. My dad was in the logging industry amd taught me young safety in the bush, safety while fishing and driving in different conditions. Im really glad these folks had someone expecting them and an area to start looking.. I hope others learn from these examples too.

I saw this episode when I was a kid. The part where Jennifer melts snow in her mouth and dribbles it into Clayton's mouth to keep him hydrated is burned into my mind forever. It didn't even occur to me that you could do that, until I saw her do it. When you're a parent and your kid's life is on the line, you do whatever it takes, and you think of these things because that's what it takes.

Interestingly this is the way mothers in many parts of the world today still introduce their babies to solid food- by chewing it for them then feeding them that way. We have become very sanitised to such natural practices in the west. With a child that has been on the breast since birth there is not much by way of microbes that mother and baby don’t already share. It builds up immunity and gut flora and is a perfectly natural practice.

Yeah this guy made me angry ... but his wife should have had the common sense to say 1,000 mile trip during really dangerously bad weather and you're not packing extra provisions of food and water and a way to keep us warm in case we have an accident or the vehicle breaks down ... ? And no way to call for help not even a CB radio ? She would still have her toes if she had said that she and the baby were going to stay home . And this poor guy would still have his toes if he had listened to his mother

​@@g-manracer1997I was screaming this! The 4 days they sat was long enough to dig out. It would have been extremely hard, but they said they were on a gravel road. They could have got the rocks from under the snow around them added the gravel under there maybe on top of their coats or the blanket under the back tires if the truck was rear wheel drive, turned the steering wheel back and forth to get the ground beneath the front tires reversed a bit threw it in drive quickly and been out of there.

@@lindaortiz9515 They thought they were heading towards the main road and more likely to flag down someone for help. It was much further than they thought and didnt find that main road. By that tine she was in too bad condition to walk any further. So he went back to the car, leaving her and the baby sheltering in the cave. After resting, he walked until he was found. I think the road he was found on was about 50 miles from the car, they thought walking the orher way was nearer. It was a happy ending thankfully! 😊

Stay.with.the.truck. Do NOT leave the road if you decide to walk out. Plenty of parts can make a shovel, and hours spent shovelling will prevail. Been there, done that, and rescued many friends, many times.

Father recalled that, as they set her on the table, her frozen legs struck each other and sounded like firewood being stacked. MLSS: Full recovery. EVEN her toes were saved.

Remember, they’re under extreme fear and duress while making decisions, especially once dehydration, malnourishment and fatigue sink in, causing them to hear and see things that aren’t there, etc.. Like this story, if they stayed with the truck or followed the road back (the opposite way that the car was going) they would reach civilization. It's easy to point out all the mistakes made on these shows. Truth is, often people underestimate the severity of their situation until it's too late which in turn leads to panic and impaired judgment. I'm just grateful these experiences are shared as learning lessons for the rest of us.

It's a tough call. If you leave them in the truck and you die on the way to get help, that basically ensures they are going to die too. Whereas if they come with you, there's a chance the baby lives even if one of the parents dies on the trip. Really no right answer in that situation. Both options have huge risks.

It’s a 50/50 situation. If he left without them, they might not have made it. Either he found help and went back for them, but once they got there the mom and baby were dead. Or he died before he could find help. Bring them with him would ensure that even if he died, they could keep going (possibly), or they all find help at the same time and all make it

And I don't know why they didn't have a cell phone of some type .... why do on a trek like that during inclement weather with a baby and not have even a cheap cell phone ? Or even a CB radio that he could have gotten cheaply . People who can't afford cell phones could at least try to buy a good used CB radio that they wouldn't have to be making mostly payments for a plan once it's installed .

@@itsgryme1081 yeah I was wondering when this was meant to have happened but no a CB radio not unrealistic at all in fact I'm from the Philadelphia area and I can remember back in the 70's a lot of people had them ...my brother had one ... we knew a lot of people that had them ... especially almost everybody that had a truck it seemed like everybody we knew that had a truck had a CB radio ... They didn't cost much and any time you had an emergency or needed to get a message to someone you could pretty much get it done if you had friends on the CB radio . People were always friendly and willing to do whatever they could do to help even if it meant calling your family or friend of yours on their phone . . That guy put his family at risk and didn't take proper precautions . Picture what it's like to have no toes anymore , wow .

All the more reason he should have tried to get a CB set even a used one or just not have gone like his mother said . Not like it matters now but there are still people who don't want cell phones and or can't afford them . Really would hope those people would get a CB radio if they're going to be traveling especially long distances , remote areas or possible bad weather ... could save a person's life

Well, when you've watched enough of these, you realize people of all ages, and life experiences make mistakes. From being lost at sea, in the desert, deep in the jungle or anywhere, being supplied and having plans for emergencies can be the difference of life and death. One must also know the capabilities of their equipment. When that snow got deep, and they were the only ones on that road, that was the clue to turn back. Sometimes pride is dangerous.

You people are so judgemental but forget when this was. You were really lucky if your parents had a set of encyclopaedias at home! I don't recall ever seeing any survival techniques in those encyclopaedias either. We didn't even have a TV when I was growing up! And people are talking about ripping the car up to fashion snow shoes 😂 with what? They didn't even have gloves! They shouldn't have taken the snow chains off, sure but I'd love to see how any of these people would do if they were young, inexperienced and with no survival training that we've all learned over the years since. They're damn lucky though, a baby that young probably wouldn't have survived for much longer given that they said he was very dehydrated by the time they got him to hospital

So it really pays to watch documentaries about tragedies and survival stories on TV and similar gadgets and always bear in mind the experiences of other victims, if you dont want to be in similar stuation. This young couple were no longer children and being inhabitants of a temperate country they have to adapt to harsh reality of life especially during winter season. The hard lesson is never underestimate mother nature.

Ya I have no idea why she didn’t stay in the truck with the baby. They walked for 3 days deeper into the wildlife preserve only for him to turn around and go back to the truck again and walk out the right way the way they came in and now she’s sitting in a cave 50 miles away. Like what?!?! Doesn’t make any sense. He could’ve walked 2 times faster without her and the baby slowing him down.

Grace Barger The main thing is that this loving family survived and all have each other. Because of this ordeal they have drawn closer together with a special bond of love and friendship that won’t be broken. Their’s is a special love. The sort of love that most people can only dream about. A wonderful outcome.

One thing my husband dose when we go on a road trip. He packs lots of survival gear. I'm mean like sleeping bags, coats, boots food and even toilet paper and he always had first aid kit with waterproof matches. That use to annoy me but after living in WY, not anymore. We also learned in WY never take a road trip in winter. When we first moved hear we still to try to go back to Mo for Christmas. We went back for the first 2 Christmas and every time we would end up sliding off the road. No one was hurt and vehicle was fine and luckily we had gear, last time is happen we was only yards away from a bridge and we never traveled in the winter again. In Mo the roads and highway seems to always be plowed but they dont do a lot of plowing here in Wyoming.

I've driven through the region this was in and WOW what a place to get lost! The landscape is VAST (I was there in the fall and it reminded me of the Lord of the Rings sometimes, it didn't look like New Zealand exactly, hard to describe), and very sparsely populated. Even if they'd had a cell phone, especially at that time, it probably wouldn't have worked cause they still barely do today. Really in the middle of nowhere. Amazing all three made it out alive

Idk why they didn't try to get the car out, put the chains back on and cleared as much snow as possible. They said it was gravel not far under the surface. They might have been able to drive out they drove it to that point.

I actually thought, "why don't they try to start the car, and melt the snow by moving the wheels in place, and then drive in reverse for 60 miles in the same direction that they came.." in theory that would have literally gotten them back to safety.

If they had managed to get that car out the same night they got stuck maybe, but by the morning the road behind them was already covered in snow. they would have to dig 50 miles of snow back to the main road where the ploughs clear the snow.

So lucky that truck came when it did. I thought the family would've sent rescue or something. No way would he have made another 51 miles.

I think that this is the first survival situation on land (as opposed to being adrift in a life raft) I have seen where there was no attempt to make a fire or even the thought of doing so. If you travel anywhere in unpopulated areas, ALWAYS have canned food, bottled water (2 liter soda bottles filled with tap water work great and are free), a pack of lighters, and dry newspaper in zipper seal storage bags. If it can get cold have blankets and warm clothing in there as well. If you don't need these things, they will be ready for you if you ever do. You never know.

I thought it was weird they're going to make a trip like that with no cell phone ... ... no way to call for help if they have an emergency . If they couldn't afford a monthly plan on a cell phone it would have been great if he could have had a CB radio in the truck that he could have bought and so I just don't understand this guy . Yep. I carry a case of water, change of clothes, shoes, boots, 1st aid, emergency blankets, flashlight z extra batteries, rechargeable headlamp, food, etc etc in the trunk of my car, just in case. About the only place I go is work and grocery shopping, but I learned my lesson a long, long time ago. Better be ready for anything. I started driving home one day and it was so warm you could wear t-shirt and shorts, but about 20 minutes or so into my drive a freak BLIZZARD blew in. I definitely learned to be prepared after that little life lesson, lol...

You know, I noticed something. We blast all these people in all these episodes for not having a smart phone, but most of these events had happened way before smart phones came along, and when signals were really poor/connections. Now they got coverage in all kinds of places even remote places, back then they didn't and when I say back then, I mean like 14 years ago, I mean this whole technology thing is blooming and ensures more safety and survival in situations like this and all these other episodes.

That was your only option dig out lol!!! Listen I'm from Canada drive across Canada regularly I been In the worst storms you could imagine. Off reading thats what I was doing today in the snow I got stuck in horrible snow storms before one time it took me 16 hours too dig myself out you can even use the jack if you got too. Theres so many thing they could of done and if it was snowing when they got stuck the best thing was try too get out immediately and go back. I know I'm use too it where I'm Canadian but especially if I had my new born baby I would of made sure too have food blankets warm clothes which I always have in all my vehicles and have plenty of gas. If you got even a half tank of gas you can make that last a long time starting the vehicle for 15 20 min then shutting off for a half hour. Even longer if you only dine this every hour. I was stuck at a gas station in Northern Ontario in a massive storm for 36 hours nothing open and had less then a quarter of a tank of gas and made it do. You should never keep going or go a different way then you came from unless your absolutely sure. I know this is useless now but for anyone els that finds themselves in this situation. Also when stuck you can rock your vehicle out. If I can even move a inch or two theres a very good chance I'll get it out with no one pushing just by rocking back back forth using the gas and break. Manuel shift is even better again.

Can you imagine how the Native Americans were able to survive in this kind of climate for so many centuries before America was discovered. Survival need to be learned from them. Also when traveling make sure you have a compass. Plus don’t zip all the way because the baby needs air. Also use branches to build a small cart to drape the baby off the snow. My friends always laughed at me because when I am traveling with my kids I have all emergency items I can think of.

Well what they did was camp their entire community in one spot for the winter, specially selected. with all their possessions, food, and all their fuel. Basically like living in a town.
