@@yewtewbstew547At one point in time, long before the black knights were founded, Izalith was allied with Anor Londo. While I do think the Sanctuary Guardian looks more like something Seath would make, if it were actually the Leo Demon, it could imply the Witch of Izalith and her daughters were able to wield their lord soul, that which possesses powers relating to life, to modify living things. This may also be the origin of the serpent-men who guard Sen's Fortress, the gauntlet a prospective silver knight must pass to attain knighthood. Both the Sanctuary Guardian and Serpent-Men are chimeras who wield lightning, the hallmark of Anor Londo's power. If the "Life Soul" could modify existing life but not produce new life, this would provide additional context to the Witch of Izalith's decision to create the Chaos Flame, itself an ill-founded attempt to birth a new First Flame (supposedly the origin of all life, with the exception of dragons).

Izalith being a swamp would've fit in with the lore too. We hear a great many things of a "Great Swamp" which is the origin of many pyromancers, but we never quite understood why pyromancers loved swamps, or why they converged upon/come from a Great Swamp in particular. Well, if Izalith was previously a swamp, then it all makes sense. The stone city of Izalith is IN the Great Swamp. The Pyromancers come from the Great Swamp, because Izalith is there, and Izalith is the birthplace of Chaos, Flame Sorcery, and as a result, Pyromancy.

The Great Swamp referenced by Laurentius and some item descriptions is clearly outside of Lordran, like the other places the face presets are named after (Astora, Vinheim, Catarina, etc). I've heard that the dragon asses was supposed to be just one ass, and that geographically, this ass is just below the undead dragon half in the Valley of Drakes. But then, when they were forced to rush Izalith, they didn't had the time to make better enemies so they just used the ass that was already there, ready and working and spammed it everywhere.
@kingborehaha
@kingborehaha Жыл бұрын
I never really bought that theory, and with the crawling undead dragon in Izalith map data + the previously large enemy variety (before they got cut) makes me have significant doubts. I would personally guess there used to be just a handful of legs to go with the torsos. Crawling Undead Dragons had some significant technical issues which are quite difficult to resolve, which is likely why they were cut in the first place. If they worked better, I imagine they would have been in the lava when DS1 came out.

@@kingborehaha alternative theory: the dragon legs model is also used in the centipede demon which is basically the dragon legs infected with a bunch of centipedes (like the egg carriers are). the one thing that's different is that in the centipede demon the ribs point upwards and the feet have turned into little centipede heads. centipede demon even has some animations from the dragon legs i think also. so it could be that the upper body gets separated from the lower which gets turned into centipede demon?

@@venus_as_a_b0y Centipede demon's legs are pretty different vs undead dragon legs if you really look at the model data, but I think that's a fun idea. More reasonable than Izalith being full of nearly 30 dragon asses for SOME reason, at least. lol.

I for one am glad that we got the Lost Izalith that we did. Stepping through the outer wall, after seeing a mysterious, giant round stone thingy in the Demon ruins, climbing down my way all the way from Ceaseless Discharge through the Firesage Demon and Centipede Demon arenas, and then seeing "Lost Izalith" on screen. It just clicked for me. Yes, this was the lost ancient city, this was the unmoved kingdom with "transformed" inhabitants that was laying for a thousand years under an inaccessible and impenetrable dome and cut off because of massive amounts of lava. Left to itself, to wither away, undying, with unending chaos flame energy. It fit perfectly in my head because the entire and obvious demon/chaos/lava connection. The architecture helped, too. So majestic, so mysterious, so different from every other area in the game. Yes, Bed of Chaos is lackluster. But the Lost Izalith in the final game is honestly, truly, one of my favorite areas in the entire game, and nothing will ever change that. I still feel some of the awe I felt in that moment when I stepped through the outer wall, stepping into a realm that was cut off from the rest of the universe by arrogance, and massive amounts of lava.

I think it would be a cool idea if sludge from Blighttown was seeping into the lava soaked ruins of Izalith. The top part of Izalith is typical swamp, but as you get lower the sludge starts to boil as it comes into contact with the lava and you get areas with toxic gas, until eventually you find a final boss room flooded with lava. The lava could also be a side affect of the botched recreation of the first flame, hence why you have all this foliage in an area full of lava.

Clearly, we should fuse the two concepts together, making a swamp that has volcanic features! Though now that I think on that joke more, it may actually be an interesting concept to explore. You could have fumaroles appear in the map, which could make an area temporarily dangerous due to the deadly gas they emit. There could also be some magma/lava streams that could provide a very risk vs reward shortcut (get to someplace sooner at the cost of a decent amount of HP loss). The swamp itself could maybe even do slight damage when you travel through it, perhaps due to high temperatures / other hazards.

Swamp Izalith looks so cool and it being the great swamp makes a lot of sense lore wise, but i genuinely feel like we'd really be missing out on all the cool and iconic lava stuff that's found nowhere else in the game, unlike swamps which already have blightown rep. If there was room for the lava stuff either somewhere else or only in the area between Quelag and Demon Firesage and they could make that fit cohesively then I'd be all for it.

An important lesson was learned here: if you want it to be a swamp, make it a swamp. Every game after was cool with multiple poison swamps.
@Rexhunterj
@Rexhunterj 7 ай бұрын
DS3 did it right, you can get poison moss before the swamp so the swamp isn't completely miserable, also in the area before and during the swamp there are armors with decent poison resistance for those brave enough.

Very interesting! I didn't know about this. My guess is that they wanted to distinguish every area from each other, and they might felt like Izalith swamp was too reminiscent from the one in Blighttown. This precursor versión of the smouldering lake from DS3 looks cool though
@НиколайСтадник-з8в

Yeah, they wanted to distinguish Izalith from Blighttown so they made it nearly identical to demon ruins as if there was not enough lava areas with fire themed bosses already. 😁

It even fits the pattern established with Demon's Souls, where you descend through a 'Blighttown' area, then cross a huge poison swamp, and finally descend to a boss fight in a toxic swamp.

I wonder what was the original plan for demon ruins if izaketh is a swamp. The area was very clearly rushed its the most unfinished area in the game but lava in it sort of makes sense and its also a huge area with lazily placed enemies in lines so i wonder what it was originally mesnt to look like.

I like the idea of a hybrid half-swamp, half-lava infested area as per the "swamp" concept art. While lava levels and poison swamps are common cliches that players can immediately put into a recognizable box once they see it, a hybrid of the two would have possibly inspired more curiosity and exploration.

Izalith as a poison swamp with those enemies gave it a feel of a combination of the Latria Swamp and Valley Of Defilements Stage 2 to be honest.

Wow, it looks so much better as a swamp. The architectur, the tree branches, it all just fits. However, I do understand the argument against it. Blightown is a gigabtic swamp. And from a basic visual view, the lava world is a lot more distinct. It's just a big shame there was no time to actually change it and we ended up with a half baked mess.
@Maytag99

I think they made a good change. A lava area works better in the final game than a 2nd swamp, which yes would have felt repetitive. Even unfinished, I think it's better the way it ended up, probably.

Fromsoft may have changed it because of blighttown. If both places were swamps it may have been to much swamp area in a single game. The interesting bit would be if blightown was made before or after the swamp izalith. I would assume blightown came after and fromsoft thought they should change izalith to make it more distinct, but just ran out of time after making that decision.

I thought maybe it was similar to Demons Souls with the game branching out in the second half. There are 5 worlds with 4-5 levels in each, and world 5 is entirely made up of swamps. Perhaps "Pyro and Swamp" was similarly one entire path early in development.

While it's a shame the area is so unfinished, I think I prefer Lost Izalith as a lava area. It makes thematic sense for there to be lava in such a deep underground area populated by chaos demons, and it would have been lame for Blightown to be succeeded be an area that's just the second half of Blightown again.

I suppose you're not wrong, lore wise it panned out rather well, the home of pyromancers should be a little hot, and we wouldn't have gotten Ceaseless Discharge if it was still a swamp. But I doubt it would be back to back Blighttown.

Yeah I think lava theming was a good direction to take Izalith, but I wish we could've seen what Fromsoft would've done with it given more dev time. Current Izalith feels half baked in a lot of ways.
@qwormuli77
@qwormuli77 Жыл бұрын
But the omnipresent lava acting more as a simple stage hazard than some thematic element just downgrades into a more generic 'fire level' IMHO. What if only the central seat of Izalith's past power was immersed in in fire and brimstone as the unapproachable bastion amidst the great swamp? That'd be the best of both worlds and the most fitting.
@cyansung-sun1308

@@qwormuli77 Hey...there's a poison swamp in that bastion isn't there, where all the toilet demons are? That's actually kind of infuriating, your idea is right, they just got the order wrong! Here's hoping they fix that if they ever remake the first Dark Souls, it would be nice to find the Toxic Pyromancy there, remake the Centipede Ring to boost pyromancy power, there's a lot of neat stuff they could do with your suggestion.
