Today, we do not have one single village left in Singapore and the last kampong - which is a Malay word for village - here was demolished, I cheered because that was the last of the squatters and we achieved that by 1980. We rehoused the total population and it had multiple knock-on effects.

Some of this can be seen in Sarawak of today, indeed. I am sad that Singapore has eradicated everything perceived as not modern, and in the process eradicated a part of the history, culture, and the roots. May be it is not up to me to speak like this. But still, I see these scenes and houses, man ... not everything was worthwhile, but there are some pretty pretty ones.

Dear Venn. That was how it all started from me too, when my dad, mom and late grandmother told stories about their kampong life. They were moved by this video too. As a Malaysian Chinese I still remember my kampong days in the 1960s in Telok Anson,Perak.Ours was a government quarters and we stayed in a wooden bungalow equipped then only with the bucket toilet system. Yet,our compound was very spacious especially the backyard. As kids, we could move around freely, catch spiders and collect much sought rubber seeds known in Cantonese as " Sap Yee Tui Kan".

My family lived in a Chinese kampong at Chin Lye Street in 1960. The small village was located across Gate 1 S'pore Harbour Board (SHB) in Tg Pagar end. No electricity supply. Only 2 stand taps shared amongst villagers. One wooden toilet block using bucket system also shared. Life then was peaceful but tough.

Hi Mr. Sarafian. Would you say wells are proof enough there were settlements nearby? Then have you seen some sporadically located along Bt Timah Rd (opposite where ACS Barker/ Caltex Petrol Station stands).

I do see well and building structures, semi-buried along RifleRange road, Durian Loop, Lorong Senapang and land strips along Dairy Farm. Anyone use to stay at kampong jalan lorong halwa in the 70s? Beside P.I.E towards changi airport (Toa Payoh) just before Mount Pleasant exit. Theres a big drain villagers used to wash their laundry and a big old well used by all ethnic race young and old to take their bath in the morning and early evening. 😁 If anyone knows Haji Hassan and Hajjah Maimunah that lived beside P.I.E and the only chinese family living in a big brick house among the attap house? That will be awesome mate, if anyone from that village still around. 👍👍👍👍👍
