Leaf-peeping in Texas? We almost didn't believe it until we discovered the listing for Lost Maples Natural Area and lost ourselves in the deep folded canyons of the Texas Hill Country. In this particular canyon, an isolated population of big-tooth maples continues to thrive, changing color in late fall. We arrived around the expected peak and took a hike, but rangers told us the dry conditions that year made for less color than normal. It was still a beauty spot for a hike that crisscrossed a stream through the canyon over and over again.
