Great opening sentence, lol! 😀 It's incredible that there's been a market in the same spot for 1,000 years! It was interesting to find out just how much the Normans changed the look of the City. I really enjoyed going way back in time and learning more about the history of our Fine City 😊

John. Thank you very much for uploading these videos of yours. I get great joy and satisfaction out of watching them. Not to mention a very good education about Norwich. Could you do a video on how a planned road system in the 1960s would have torn out the soul of our historic City? Also could you do a video on how the 1960s destroyed a lot of the beautiful historic streets of Norwich and how the flyover over Magdalen Street has ruined it forever. Personally I'd like to see that flyover removed and a new scheme put in place. Nice to see a video of how Magdalen Street looked before that flyover was built. Also Stump Cross and Botolph Street. Also could you reduce of video on the Haymarket and a more in-depth video about Anglia Square and what the area look like before that monstrosity was built? John. Thank you very much again for uploading your wonderful videos. Pure.

By viewing your videos I've learned more about our 'Fine City' than in any history lesson at (Heartsease High) school back in the mid-70s! Or is it that I am more interested these days? Either way do please keep up the good work. I look forward to more videos.

Thanks a lovely thing to say, thank you so much Kevin. I think as you get older things fall into a context, making history more meaningful than it was at school.

A good teacher can bring history to life. It also depends on the syllabus to some extent. Norwich is one of those places where the city's past is very apparent. In other places such as my home town of Ipswich the history is there but one has to look for it. There's also the joy of discovery. I'd never heard of the Kett Rebellion until I came across Ketts Oak on a cycle ride.

@@geoffpoole483 if you like reading can I suggest a book by C J Sansom called Tombland, a wonderful fictionalised account of Kett's rebellion.

I've often wondered about the castle keep's design. There's a lot more to the Normans than the Battle of Hastings and the Domesday Book. They ruled Sicily at one time, for example. A question for you, John; how long has Kett Heights been in existence? Given its proximity to the river I imagine it may have had strategic importance. Thanks for another video which has inspired me to get out and explore the city.
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Geoff. As for Ketts Heights, it was there in Ketts days, so at least 1549(!) - but was restored in the 1980s. This may be of interest. www.kettsheights.co.uk/about-ketts-heights.html

@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thanks for the link, John. According to the website the wall at the top of Ketts Heights is all that remains of St Michael's chapel, built by the Normans to compensate for the destruction of a church on Tombland when the cathedral was built.

Very good, all the places I recall from my 23 years there since birth, before moving to NZ in 1972, but I have to say that the Normans did a damn sight better job than the Norwich Council has for as long as I can remember.

Thankyou John, another good look into the History of Norwich and Lollards pit. I Know they call it progress, but i wonder what people think of all the roadworks, development and mass housing that has gone up in Norwich at the moment as it looks like it has been hit with a bomb.
