That's a good point, the only thing that would matter is Fem Omori can go into the girls bathroom and needs the potion to turn male in headspace like it Is currently other than that. Kinda wasting a lot of time from something that doesn't have much gameplay differences.

Well, technically Mari's beta design was Rowan. Omocat said that Rowan was going to be a perfectionist, but decided to make her a seperate person and let the other parts (timid personality) go to Basil

Not Rowan, Flower was the one that had more of a perfectionist side to him. When Omocat moved that aspect of him to Mari, Flower became Rowan after making him more angsty.

I honestly like how there isn’t a gendered option because I enjoy the characters for how they are in game, and I feel it would take away some of the appreciation for the characters if you chose their genders.

Yeah.. They feel more like actual people if we don't get to choose something like that. I kinda like it when story driven games just choose the mc's gender since it makes them feel less like just a vessel and more like their own character.

iirc the reason there’s no beta art for Mari is because she wasn’t initially planned to be in the game. The first concept for Omori was a teenage NEET who had a toxic imaginary friend named “Tako-Chan” who would force him to do bad things (e.g. stabbing himself). There was also a lot more story involvement with those 3 dark sprites seen on the beta sprite sheet, one of which is Abby, who try to force Omori to come back to reality and confront his issues. Mari was probably a combination of those 3 demons, and Omori ended up being the “Tako-Chan” counterpart of Sunny who would force him to do bad things. It’s possible they had an idea of who Mari should be since she appeared in the trailer, but maybe she wasn’t meant to be in the game as an interactable character until much later in development. A lot of the story was focused on Omori and Flower/Rowan at first.

I think that mari was developed properly later too, as they focused more about the party elements (basil, sunny, etc) and later on made up the story properly. However they knew already that there was something weird. Also, the something wouldn't work properly with male mari

Personally I like that there's no other gender option as personally I wouldn't get too attached to the characters, like we all know that the Older Brother is usually an Ass and them being suddenly nice and such and I wouldn't feel too attached to them sadly.

I have a 2014-2015 postcard of the game from kickstarter and it has a Mari sprite in there, looks like the usual dreamworld sprite but with faraway colors, the vest and hair was black and didnt have major changes besides that, looks the same as the Mari we know

I would love to play as girl-Sunny, because I just love the design, even tho it’s not that different. THIS HAIR JUST LOOKS SO CUTE BUT I like that we have canon gender for Sunny. I love that there’s no “chose your gender” thing in the game. It just feels better this way And that’s why I’d rather play Omori with some mod that will add girl-Sunny, than have this option in the real game

i think gender swap would be interesting, but it would take a lot of time to make female sunny story so i think omocat and team made a good decision, but i hope fans will make mod for female sunny (not just a sprite and etc but the whole different story which could be understandable for especially girls). Also i didnt know basil had beta design and different name... Well rowan looks like a tough guy for some reason.

We already have a female Omori mod, I think. We already have things like Final Duet With Pigtails. This is why we should let people contribute and expand on our works. Imagine if game developers joined in with many other developers creating, suggesting and approving custom features

As far as I know, and please correct me if I am wrong, Mari was created, designed and added into the game quite late into production (it's hard to define "late into production", but considering that the game's original idea started in 2012, Mari's creation could date back to 2016 or so). Having removed most of the OMORIBOY's backstory and having to start anew, they created her. You could say she is the last main character that was created for the game.

True, it was pretty obvious that in the early stages it seemed like Omocat's main view for Sunny/Omori was just that he was a kid in some wonderland world hanging out with his friends (at least, that's how I've viewed it), even to the point where there was a lot more things to do in the dream world while the real world was mostly just to make the story progress

Maybe although on Omori's website there's a picture of the comic version of Omoriboy & it looks like Mari (or a character that resembles her) appears at the end. It doesn't look like Mari was a one-off character that was scrapped & then revisited either since she appears in the 2014 trailers, mostly in White Space although occassionally in the RW, along with concept art & an in-game screenshot also probrably from 2014 of Sunny being in his room looking at Mari on the computer. The sprites at 1:15 also look a lot older than the ones from the 2014 trailer. I'm not sure why she doesn't appear in concept art more though

Its way better without gender option, i personally hate having to call a character they or just seeing people call them she while some would say he which would make it way too hard to understand For exemple, undertale with frisk and chara having an unknown gender which is already pretty annoying but would be even worse if you could pick their gender cause there wouldn't be a real canon answer and would make it just stupid
